Hey Gang,
Got a call from the airport, my plane is ready to pick up. I’m going tomorrow AM to go get her, also working on hunting down a DA-100 too. I’ll post some pics on Monday.

Hey Gang,
Well I got her home and unpacked her. A thing a beauty – it surely is. OK, my observations. I must have got an older version. The rear stab anti-rotation pin doesn’t look like it is the reinforced version. There is a small buildup of excess resin in this area, but not like the reinforcements for the wing. I’ll have to make this mod I think.
The canopy is not tinted and I think I’m just going to paint it black from the inside.
There is also no tail wheel supplied. I’ll probably just buy a CF one. Some of you guys were talking about air up 5” main wheels. Where did you get these?
For those of you who mounted the tank above the wing spars, do you have a problem with fuel siphoning while just sitting in the pits? There seems like more room above the spars, and less modification to get it there. Are there any disadvantages?
Other than that the kit looks perfect. Those seams are so tight that I’m not going to do anything with them. And MAN this thing is light ;)

Rick, the fuel doesn't siphon because it has to go through the pumped carb. I used 4.5 inch skylite wheels. If you are interested in a tinted canopy email me I have a NIB tinted canopy that I will trade you. The desert sun is very hard on the dark canopy. My plane came with the Graupner carbon tail wheel. ON the stab area my fuse was only 1/8" thick there, if yours is more then that you have the new tail.

Congradulations RickP,

I just picked up another one today for a friend.

I will be putting it together for him this week.

I should be able to finish this one in about a week.

What color did you get and how dose it look over all?

Get your digital camera out I want to see it

If you have any questions ask, I will be building #2

Good Luck

Dave

Hey Dave,
Well I'm sure it will take me more than a week to build, but I'll try to remember and take the camera home. I went ahead and popped for the scale scheam, same as yours. Your pictures looked so good I couldn't resist spending the few extra dollars. Overall it looks perfect!

I didn't measure the thickness, but the anti rotoation dowel holes for the stab are less than 1/8" I'm pretty sure. I might just put some bearing plates back in there. For sure there is pleanty of room for me to reach back there...

Quist,
Do you use the clear ones? Is that why you want to trade? How does the tinted look? Like Richo's? I might be interested. Shoot - I think it only gets hot like that for one week out of the year up here.

Hey Quist,
I sent a PM about the Canopy, please let me know, I wanna get started.
Plan on installing bearing plates in the tail. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Hey Gang,
Here are the pictures of the stock anti-rotation holes. There was a little build up of that white type epoxy around the hole, but no where near 1/8" or 3/16. I think this is the un-reinforced version.

Here is a pic of one installed from the inside. I sanded the inside area to scuff the surface, applied some 30 min epoxy to the face and used a 1/4-20 nut and bolt to position and hold it in place while it dried.
I squeegeed in as much epoxy as I could and let it dry on its side so it wouldn't run out. Then I reached in with a rag and some Alcohol to clean the excess away. Flip and repeated for the other side.
Then I went back in with my dremel and opened up the hole from the outside close to where it needs to be. Now tonight I'll insert a 12" piece of CF rod and some sandpaper to bring the hoes to final shape and true them up.

Hey Guys,
I got a few construction questions. What type of screws did you use to fasten the phenolic servo arms to the JR arms? It appears that this hardware did not come with my kit. Do I use 2-25 nuts and bolts or are they self tapping?
Also, Dave, How are the 4721's in wing? Are they enough or should I go for the extra and put 8411's all the way around? What are the rest of you using - because I know those ailerons are stiff.

RickP,

I used 2-56 x 1/4" socket head cap screws and # 2 flat washers.
I didn't use a nut on the back side just Locktite.

Ok, RickP, I'm sorry, I don't want to intrude on your forum here, but this is something I need to ask. Who is the BEST maker of aluminum gear out there that makes custom gear? I am fed up with my stupid CF gear and I already threw it away. There is no way to repair it now. I need to know who is the best out there. Thanx in advance.

Hello Guys,
I was working on the Elevators last night and having a terrible time getting the horns to line up in both halves. I had to open up the milled the slots to get them down all the way, and using the slots given I couldn't get the pivot point to line up with the hinge point. I had to elongate them back a little ways, and when I couldn't get both exactly lined up I called it quits last night.
Did anyone else have problems with this and what did you do? Or did you just stick 'um in and that's it?
RickP

Ethan,
Do you think you just got a bad set of gear or have you tried a replacement set already?
Rick

I wound up getting one close and gluing it in with 24hr resin. Then I clamped a flat piece of aircraft ply to the back of the fixed horn, ran one wire through both elevator halves and glued the remaining horn using the ply as a fixture to hold it true to the the one already installed. Then a small wire through both horns for good measure. After I was done I had an exact profile between both elevator halves. PERFECT!
Ethan, how about that Gear? Was one was delaminating? The new type or the original and did you go through two sets? What should I expect? - just make soft landings? ;)

I think I had the old style gear, so I imagine if you have a new airplane, like yourself, that I wouldn't worry too much. But keep an eye on it. If it starts to delaminate, get new gear because it just gets bad after that. I hope to have new gear soon.

Ethan,

You can tell if it's the new style undercarts when you drill the mounting holes. In the old ones you cane see the wood, whith new one ther is none. The weight diffrence in only slight between the old and the new, around 20-25grams.

Richo
ps how's the smoke going???

Hey Gang,
Well low and behold I found my DA-100 with stock mufflers and ignition waiting to great me at the door last night! Now I really have to get off my duff here ;-) after ogling and drooling over the DA, I set it aside and resumed my construction. I fastened the stab halves to the aluminum tube with the 3mm screws after I finally found my 3mm tap.
I haven't made much progress with the canopy hatch, Ethan (I think it was him) got me thinking about the vibration and I am concerned he might be right. However, there has to be a better way so that I can allow for quick access at the field. I'm still thinking about that one.

RickP.

You are only going to take the six screws in and out once during a flying sesion. Once battoned down I no longer need in there and I can still see the fuel consumption and all rudder and battery connections.

Did you drill the mounting holes for the DA yet?
Remember they probably need to be about a quarter inch higher
Double check

The DA looks good enough to go on your fireplace mantle ?

Good Luck and post some pics soon

Hi Dave,

Did you add any extra right thrust when installing your DA?

Thanks, Tim

quist 03-19-2003 02:31 AM

FiberClassics 330L – Here we go again;)

I am using the stock thrust line with the da 100 and stock mufflers.

Tim,

Yes I did. I added a 1/32 washer to the left side. I am still playing with it and it seems to be nice and straight with a 28=10 but it might be too much right thrust on a smaller prop.

Dave
