Restraint system for 27% and larger???????

Who make a good restraint system for 27% and larger planes, I was lucky today I was using a makeshift system on the tail after a new carb install on the ZDZ 40, the engine started at a much higher throttle than I thought, the plane moved forward and got my jeans and scraped the skin on my shin, I am lucky could have been much worse, is there a manufacturer out there? Or does anyone have plans to make one.

Thanks,

Mike (aka stupid)

There's several types out there. Some sell in the forums here on RCU. Check under accessories. I've purchased two on here and both work fine. I feel your pain. I gave up a fingertip to the RC Gods.

here are some that i made from long steel sold at lowes or homedepot. I ground the steel to a point & then drill out large wooden dowel or closet poles glued in wiht poly glue. I installed the foam on them and push them in the ground to start a plane around the house. At the field I have install or driven 1.25" pvc pipe into the ground, i then install 1" pvc pipe inside of those sockets wraped in foam ot hold all my birds.

I've got a set like krayzc-RCU and they work very well. I also have one of these from JL Power Products, (located at http://www.jlproducts.net/ProductTailTrap.html ) that I use on my 30%ers. But I have a larger one of these that someone made and sold here on RCU for my 35%ers.

Another thing I've done is I try not to fly alone. I don't just depend upon a mechanical device not failing. I get the interaction of an fellow flyer and all has gone well. Even if I had to loop a rope or cord around the tail feathers and tie it to my trailer, I wouldn't start up without something.

I tie/secure the rear of the fuse/horizontal stab to a fence post or an anchored field table leg with thick rope. Pull the airplane forward until the rope is snugg, then drive in two 3 foot padded lengths of rebar in front of the wing (grass field). Redundant safety. Takes a few seconds longer to setup and release for taxi but well worth the effort. Another habit I have is to insure the throttle linkage is working properly while moving the throttle stick through it's entire range of motion before attempting startup (preflight). I have seen/experienced a gummed up carb linkage and you may think it's working properly from the sound of the servo but that's not always the case! It could be stuck at a high throttle setting[X(] (Don't ask;)) Of course this may be difficult to detect with rear carb designs.

I too use what ever sturdy object I can find and tie a rope to it. I have also used a very long screw drive pushed deep into the ground to tie off of.

I have a 2.5ft, 1/2 rod driven into the ground with 2 - 1inch wide straps that criss cross over the stabs in back then go over the wings and clip down to the landing gear, easy to take off. Use large rappelling clips on the gear. The straps are the ones used for cargo straps for ~$5-8. Either one breaks you still have one left and they are rated for several hundred pounds each. This will only work if you have enough room in front of the wings to prop.

Was wondering. I know at the flying field we dug two holes and put pipe in the holes. And when I want to fly a big plane you just take the two smaller poles and put them in the ground and the two poles hold the wing. It works great!! And it is removable. Just an idea for your club. Even at home.

It's an assembly and start station that I build. It holds back the airplane from eating me alive when I start it. I used the stake/rope method for awhile but that method broke a stab loose and I went to this system instead. I also saw a guy run an airplane up once with the tail tied down and the tail failed and through the pits the airplane went.

You built those, wow. Got any for 85-100cc gassers? Got a website?

For anything gas I'd want it secured to mother earth. It is very cool though. Nice job.

Joe, I agree but I figured if he had one that size there would be provisions for that, even if it was a place for stakes.

RE: Restraint system for 27% and larger???????

Hi guys, from what I've seen here I have the cheapest restraint system, consistists of a 12"X 3/8 steel spike I bought at the hardware store for $3.00, and 3 ft piece of 1/2 in nylon cord. I tie a loop on both ends. Drive the spike in the ground, put one loop around the spike, loop the other end under one side of the elevator, over the fuselage, back under the other elevator, put the loop over the spike, pull the rope taut and start your plane. Quick, simple, cheap, and as safe as any restraint I've ever seen.

RE: Restraint system for 27% and larger???????

Yes I have one in the works for larger airplanes. The stand pictured has places for 2 stakes to be driven through the stand into the ground. It's wasn't designed for full throttle runs though it will easily do them if secured to the ground. I've run my YS1.60DZ at full throttle in it but I don't recommend it because even with the amount of foam on the stand it's possible to damage the airplane. Given the cost of airplanes today I don't want to take a chance on damaging anything. For smaller airplanes the rope over the tail is fine. Bigger airplanes you stand the chance of breaking the stab loose. BTDT.

I made mine out of some pvc. Sort of looks like a football goal post. When Im ready to take off, I just pull the tail back a few inches and the holder falls to the ground. Cost less than 10$ to make.

Bass 1 has the right idea to securing your plane. For the pass 10 years, I have used a rope to tie my planes to a picnic table or a fence post. This method has proven to be most effective and the least expensive of all other methods I have seen. It even works well on my 40% YAK 54.
