H9 85cc Sukhoi SU-26MM ARF/DA 85 questions.

Thinking about picking up the H9 Sukhoi and DA 85. To those who are flying this combo how is the plane holding up? I'm worried about the vibrations from such a big single cylinder engine. Any thing I should know about?

That's your money but I am telling you this: forget it. I had nothing but problem with that combo. Every parts on the the plane has been reglued. That 85 is a beast but you need the right airframe to handle it. Put a twin like the DA 100 or do like me: live and learn!

:)

Wow Serge, I have that combo and haven't ad any issues...This is my second sukhoi. The first one an aileron CAME OFF. I was just above idling about 100 feet in the air doing an elevator. The hinges actually pulled out and the aileron broke in half and was hanging and dangling..It went into an incontrollable spin and splat. I lost that plane but luckily horizon gave me a new one to replace it thank god..But so far on this one I havent had any issues..About 20 or so flights..I do always coat the engine box inside and out with thinned down 30 minute expoy for fuel proofing and strength..

RE: H9 85cc Sukhoi SU-26MM ARF/DA 85 questions.

We had three of them and lost all three. Somehting to do with the DA-85 shaking that plane to bits and other inherent issues.

The fourth one is holding on with a BME 102. Good flying plane.

Thanks for your replies! Glad I asked first! So does anyone have this plane with the DA 100?? Is the cowl wide enough to fit the 100? I know on my other H9 planes that have the DA 100's there is hardly any vibrations. I would think the sukhoi should hold up just fine. Any thoughts?

You'll need small cutouts for the plug caps on both sides.

RE: H9 85cc Sukhoi SU-26MM ARF/DA 85 questions.

You will need some nice cutouts to fit the DA-100 and will affect the CG quite a lot.

With the BME 102, it actually fits in the cowl (with CM-6 plugs) and the engine is lighter, so CG is manageable.

Guys, what came apart on the planes and do u think it was a result of the da85 or poor gluing?

serge1 07-13-2009 07:12 PM

RE: H9 85cc Sukhoi SU-26MM ARF/DA 85 questions.

A combinaison of both. Poor gluing and the DA 85 shacking the plane aparts. Firewall and engine box, canopy, landing gear, cowl not holding etc... I sold my DA 100 for the 85... Biggest mistake I did in the Hobby.

And yes my spinner and prop are perfectly balanced.

Wow Serge, that's got me worried now....My 85 doesnt shake, at least not that I can tell...I wonder how many other folks have had this problem?

You must have been asleep during the last few months.

There is plenty of information on these issues, here and elsewhere.

Andrew,

Very sorry to burst your bubble.. The Suckoi is a great flying plane but sooner or later you will have problem with it. The question is when.

They should never had recommended a 85 in that airframe. It simply can't handle it.

So many owners are having problems with that bird. Mine probably won't last the end of the season.

Good luck with yours.

Actually Yarom, I have been fighting a battle with cancer, I wish I could have been sleeping instead....So the bme or a twin works better in this plane? Interesting since the twins throw out more horsepower....

RE: H9 85cc Sukhoi SU-26MM ARF/DA 85 questions.

Well, sorry to hear that and hope you are getting better.

The BME 102 does not put out more power than the DA-85. At least mine does not.

I can get 6K out of the BME on a 26x10 and 6.4K out of the DA with a 27x10.

The BME runs smoother and there is no canister driving the vibrations into the fuselage... It seems to work very well with this plane.

Thanks, I'm all better....I kicked it's butt..........I'm so stubborn even that cant beat me:D....I may look into finding a bme 102 just for peace of mind, maybe even another plane too.

Why not pick up a 110? :D

I have a friend who had one with an 85... he said it shook apart as well. There is a great video out there with IDO flying his Brother's Suhkoi with a DA 85... makes the plane look good though!

I have 55 flights now on my DA85 and MTW canister set up 26MM. To be honest this is a fantastic flying airframe, one of the best monoplanes I've flown. The DA85 is also a great motor. Initially I had a lot of problems with cowling, canopy and canister mount in the fuselage. However, because it is such a great airplane I persisted and am glad I did so. I'm not wholey convinced it will get past 100 flights before falling apart.

Great airplane though :)

Rob, what did you do with the cannister mounts? Also did u enclose the cannister to keep the heat out of the fuselage? I opened up the bottom section per the "destructions" but it is hot as heck inside...

RE: H9 85cc Sukhoi SU-26MM ARF/DA 85 questions.

I braced up the canister mounts and added silicone buffers around the opening. So far it's proved fine.

Canister tunnel is as per standard. I've never noticed or suffered from high cabin temps.

Cheers,

Rob

RE: H9 85cc Sukhoi SU-26MM ARF/DA 85 questions.

Have you opened holes in the back of the fuselage to let the hot air out? There are round holes behind the elevator turnbuckles where the covering needs to be cut out...

The high temperature has a catastrophic effect on Futaba 12CH FASST receivers of the the earlier model. I believe they were shutting down around 90 degrees...

I did the same thing with my cannister mounts......No I didn't oopen up any holes at the rear of the fuse, but I did add a small spoiler on the bottom of the fuse where the opening is for the cannister to help draw the hot air out. I opened up the louvers in the cowl and I was thinkin of blockin off the front ofthe cowl and opening it up in front of the head.

I have a bme 110 in mine. its fits without cutting the cowl. my plane weighs 21.6 lbs and turns a 27 x 10th at 7K plus. can you say foamie? baffel your bme and lean it out. don't be afraid.
