RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D

Pulled the trigger and ordered the Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12S.

The AUW of 19-20lbs does not concern me too much because if I want to prop hang I fly foamies.[>:] Currently bipes in my stable: 37% BME Ultimate, GP 160 Ultimate, Sig Sundancer and 2 H9 electric foamies. (Here are some pics: http://bliksemseplek.com/aviation.html)

I dithered choosing between the Aeroworks Python and the GP M-12. The completed aircraft cost difference is negligible and played no role in the decision. I have owned multiple planes from both companies and both make good products. The looks of the GP M-12 grabbed me more.

The only thing that concerns me is the composite landing gear. If it is anything like the GP 160 Ultimate then this part will be a weak point. TNT landing gear can fix that though....

I am planning to use either a DLE55 or a 3W55 for power. Most likely use 8611's throughout as I have a bunch of new ones gathering dust.

I will post updates here as things progress.

I am ready to buy it but am concerned about the covering after reading all of the problems with MonoKote lately.

New problems? I am not aware of this, but won't be surprised if this is so. I used to be an avid kit & scratch builder but starting about +-6 years ago the quality of Monokote went south in that it was a beeatch to get to stick and shrink well compared to the stuff manufactured before.

I always spend quite some time re-ironing covering on ARF's before I even start any assembly. If all else fails, I will recover.

Although I can't speak for the Pitts, my Great Planes Su-31 has the best factory covering job (MonoKote) that I have ever seen.

RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D

I agree with the Monokote problems. I recently did a repair job for a friend and I had all sorts of problems. Hard to get it to shrink and when it finally did, even though I had over a quarter inch of overlap, the seams pulled loose. The new stuff is nothing like the old.

I went through the Manual and there is NO WAY this plane will come in at 20lbs!,,,
I could see 17lbs easy...
There is less wood than in the Aeroworks pitts....
but the GP pitts looks larger...in the Fuse and rear rudder....
The wings look lightweight, and they have CF rods for support...
Has a really nicely done fiberglass cowl, and included baffling..but not scale...
but then it looks like all the other top manufactures so no complaints there...
really nice color scheme...

cons...
If you look at the close up shots of the plane, the covering isn't perfect but looks pretty good...
But that was done on a prototype, so we will see
The aeroworks pitts looks like it has ALL the details and all the little things covered in the Manual...
and the AW has nice details....like a pretty convincing radial engine baffling...

Apologies to everybody that I offended with my previous post, especially kochj.

Monkote will be discussed elsewhere, if needed.

In all due respect to Monokote AND it's respective users, whether there IS an issue with it or NOT, this is NOT the thread to be discussing it.

Yes, I agree. This thread was supposed to be about the new Great Planes Pitts M-12s. This is where I am anticipating a building thread about that plane from another member on this thread. Maybe we could talk about Monocote on another thread?? (By the way I've used it for years, and never had any problems.)

Agreed....

I really want to know about this plane....

ANY PICTS OF THE PITTS???
WOULD LOVE TO SEE IT>>..

I seal the edges of trim colors no matter what it is. That seems to eliminate most of the problems.

This new plane looks great, I can't wait to hear more feedback on it. I have a light 80cc engine on the shelf...

RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D

what engine??
I think the biplanes beeny from larger engines....they have more drag....
This one has a larger fuse than the aeroworks... (I think...not possitive)

RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D

ZDZ80rv. With a pitts muffler it weighs about the same as a piped/canister-ed 50cc engine, but swings a 26" prop at similar RPM's the piped 50cc can turn a 23" prop.

This is a SIGNIFICANT increase in thrust, nearly on the order of doubling it (likely closer to a 70% increase)...

Just go back and delete the previous posts....No big deal guys.....

WE NEED PICTS!!

Although it will have more power, a Cf pipe/50cc combo will weigh less than the 80 with a pitts.
Unfortionately, this plane hasn't provisions for cans or pipes...[:o][:-]

Well then maybe this is the wrong plane for that comparison.

I was looking at people complaining about 19-20# on a 50cc engine, 1570 sq in wing area (as big as some 75cc planes), and thinking, "This would be AWESOME with an 80cc engine in it..."

Do you think a 50cc would be ok if you didn't plan on any 3D flying?

THere wouldn't be much work to do it, so I think it absolutely pertains to this aircraft...
IT wouldn't take that much work, as there appears
to have the neccesary room from the firewall, to the bottom of the fuse.
Yes, a 80cc would make it move....

It would do well even if you DID do 3D flying...

Keep the gadgets out of this one, use a pop bottle fuel tank and get some light weight wheels and or CF main gear, and you should be
flying great...

Gp looks like they did there homework on this plane....
I don't think it will let you down.....

I looked at the video (2nd one on the web page) and the fact that ...the Wind is wipping along at
12-15 mph....I thought it did very well..... and the 50cc engine was plenty for 3D....
There webpage talks about how it will fly like a pattern plane and 3D with the best of them.

I think it will do just that, with the recomended engine...

It appears to be visual copy of QQ's m12's that he had made with Kimball ent..

[sm=redface.gif]THis thread is worthless without PICTS!!!

Seen that one run, and it is ammazing power.... and lightweight to boot!

For what it's worth I emailed great planes and they did verify real weights of 19-20 lbs, bummer I really wanted one, but 19.5 lbs on a 50 is just to much for real 3d
