Default Segaull sparrowhawk 1.8 30 cc dle and ca hinges

Hi guys, I have a seagull sparrowhawk, 1.8 , and a dle 30cc gas engine, my kit came with ca hinges. Will they hold? I already CAed the hinges, was going to power it with an os 160 2 stroke, but then changed my mind, fuel consumption reasons. Will be installing the DLE 30cc ... But I am a bit worried about the hinges... What do you think?

How many did you install per flight control?

That should'nt be a problem. During your preflight just be sure to throw in a tug on all
surfaces before flight. I've seen epoxied robarts loosen up over a period of time.

I have found over time they will eventually crack and break when using ca hinges with a gas engine. I few years back I tried them on a couple different planes and after a year both of them started breaking. I cut them all and replaced them with Robart hinge points and have been trouble free since then.

On arf's I have owned there is insufficient wood to install hinge points without cutting the covering and adding more width to the hinge location. Not too hard, but hate to cut the covering on a new plane!

If you are using Robart Hinge Points, it looks like there are 3 sizes you can use. Check out http://www.robart.com/store/control-hinges. There is another thread for more info at:

Dubro makes nice pinned hinges as well. I have used them on 120 size gassers without problems and they are almost as easy to install as the CA versions. They make them in different sizes as well. Just my .02.

thanks for all the info. Its a bit complicated at first, but i am sure i will get the hang of it. My CA hinges seem to have bonded will so far. I will maiden the plane with them, and check if i need to replace them with another type

You could also seal the hingeline, top and bottom with clear Ultracoat. Aerodynamic advantages, added strength, and cheap to do. I apply this on all surfaces on all my planes.

A covering iron with a small tip. I cut 1 inch wide strips to the length of the control surface. I crease them the full length so the adhesive side is on the outside of the crease. I tack them into the gap between the surfaces, trim along their length so nothing is exposed beyond the surface, them seal them completely with the iron.

A little practice will bring you along.
