Default 1\3 SE5A build

Building a SE5 from Peter Rake 35" electric plans, blown up to 1\3 scale ,,this is not good for your first build..lots of big bird fill in to do ..I have done that and have the T shirt to prove it! Doug smiths B-17 will do as one of the projects I have done.. This is a lumber yard of a project to do..
I have plan for a DLE55 for power.Balsa USA has given good advise on some of the strut making..Got some input from Aeroscale and wire , turnbuckles ,and press tool, etc. B17g is Don smith plans the first vet. was SHO SHO baby.the Doug went with this new paint!I just got the pix of the new look.
I finished this plane back in 98 it has 400+ flights as he indicated,,,,

Looking good and love the SE5 too. Used to live in Port Orange, back in the '80s.

I have got the 1\3 scale Balsa US Lewis gun and thought I could open the box and assemble a plastic kit "NOT" Its a wood kit . full of dowels ...Still cool but now I have to do this project too...I did get a Vickers in plastic.. seems like you are forever cutting and making parts..i see that there are 1\3 scale wheels from Williams and dubro..I have got a E mail from a British guy who says to build them .. Under the tail parts is the original plan..Here is some of the early pixs..

Nothing like bending 1/4 in wire or should I say ROD..The torch is the only way to get the stuff to be workable ,,The nicro press tool makes good and strong presses .;. And I rely like using the thimbles to turn the wire and keep wear down. gives a good finish look ,no just a wire bent around a tang.

Well been working little at a time the wires and gear now come together and can install servo mounts and control cables. Get the motor mount together finish shaping wings and install small ribs and plank ..I'm going to cheat on tail skid and make it with small wheel integrated in to keep the lines as best as pos. I like to fly my stuff not hang up or just show..so tail wheel it is... the press tool is the best makes the wires way easy.. Main wheels are going to be made ,,,Just have a time trying to make my mind up on what to make the tire out of,,Help is welcome!!Some pix from Sunny FL. its 85 out today..

you are making headway.

the biggest problem now is you will find yourself just walking around it..admiring it from every angle..picturing it in the sky !

Yes this is a direct blowup of the plans...But all the inner framing and supports are not on plan..it was to be a 36" electric..so its relay lightly built on the plan,,I have had to engineer all inner supports and change over to gas and braising..All the tangs for wires and mounts are of lots of
in put and study of pixs of the SE5 on line..I found many pix sites with very in deft pixs..Of coarse help from Balusa and aero scale .. ,,Its been one of the most difficult to do , and Iv built some real monster builds.. Ikonwest is one tough kitty to do lots of them seem to be make it your way.
I have a spare set of plans if you want to give it a shot! here is a pix of the original plans,,

I did find that the airfoil is a little bigger than scale but that's nice ,it will be more scale speed and lift at slower speeds.should be the scale trainer biplane fun flyer ,,will be real Sunday slow fly...I kinda like that ideal! it now weighs 13lbs. I going to do reinforcements and servo mounts .then see
what it weighs then ,,the fuse is kinda narrow and side can muff wont fit, will have to use Pitts muff,.trying to keep light but there's lots to install yet..if it comes in at 29lbs. and under than I did my job..hopeful!!

well as it gets hot I'm doing more yard work and changing the top on my CJ7 jeep for summer..I worked on the balsausa Lewis gun and in about 3 hrs. I got this far..Not realty a bad kit to do ,well spelled out plan and booklet..I did Use forstner bit and hollow out some of the mag. to get ride of dead
weight..The drill and dermal tip for shaping the handles works way good..the Lewis gun is at 1 1/4 oz. that's complete and unpainted..

You need to place a quarter or something in one of the photos so we can see the scale.

Beautifull work. The top wing mount must have been a real engineering feat to align. What engine are you thinking of.

I'm still hoping to stay with a DLE55 I have a new one and Pitts muff to use. the wings all were a very time consuming ordeal . The set up for wings and wires were all not on the plan, had to use full scale pixs and drawings ..

I have been keeping a running tab on the weight of the plane and servos and running gear and I'm in the 22lbs right now ..bare wood airframe is 16lbs..Need to stay 30 and under or need to step up the engine size..
