I am just starting my tri-pacer. I was thinking of using a zenoah g-62: what are you guys powering the hostettler 1/3 scale piper t-pacer?

I think that's too much engine. I'm using a Super Taran Twin with C&H Ignition.
A 45 would probably be better.

I am using a YW48B2 twin. It is a very nice piece of craftsmanship! It should be plenty of power, and it runs great on the test stand. I have found it to be difficult to start by hand, however. I hope this imptoves as it gets broken in, and as I learn its' eccentricities.

I was just about to start making my flap hinges from formica, when an inquiry on the IMAA web site got results! A builder advised that MECOA now makes and sells the CB Associates line of accessories. I got the hinges, control horns, and a bellcrank for the nose gear there! Prompt shipment, too.

Hi Joel,
I`m going to go for a Zenoah 45 on my Pacer.Looking at the plans etc it looks as though the engine`s gonna be a tight fit ? around the nose leg support. Is this why you went for a twin as these probably fit better.I see the orginal was flown on a 3w 48 twin.

You got anymore photos of yours ?

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve,

I was going to use a Cheetah 42 (modified US Engines), but the only way it would fit was sideways.
The Tartan Twin fits great with pleanty of room for the nose gear.

I'll try and post some pictures this week.

Hi Joel,
have you got any latest pics you can post on this thread.Between us all we are yet to see one complete plane! Mine has been started, being built by David Mathews in Ireland (C-17 fame),i`ll post some pics soon.I`ve got the Zenoah 45 although I`m pondering if it may be worth splashing out the extra money and going for a 3w 56 twin. What do you think,I don`t want the plane tobe under powered and would like abit of "oommmpphh" when needed

Cheers Steve

Hi Guys,
I just got the Hostetler TriPacer plans yesterday. Really glad there is a thread on the TriPacer build. The information and pictures posted here are very beneficial. Just from looking at some of the pictures posted I already have some of my questions answered.

I am getting the plans scanned and then getting a CD so I can put it in AutoCad and have the parts laser cut from my friends laser.

Please keep the pictures coming no matter what stage they are in.

Has anyone had an issue with the 3/8" tail feathers being warped. Seems like it would be hard to find a piece of wood that big that would be perfectly flat.

Also, is the fuse built righside up over the plans. I saw the one photo of the jig witch was real nice. I was hoping not to have to build a jig though if at all possible.

Well I'm sure I'll have more questions as I get into building so I'll be around.

Happy building (and flying).
Danny Allen

Hi Guys,

Does anyone have a Bill Of Material for the Hostetler Tripacer. My plans did not come with one so not sure if that was supposed to be included.
It would really help in speeding things up if I had a BOM for hte wood.

If you do have a BOM you can e-mail it to me at [email protected].

I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, I want to make the scale cowl which opens from the side, is hinged and has latches. Has anyone attempted that yet. Can I use the fiberglass cowl and cut and hinge it? That's my initial plans, to cut and hinge the fiberglass cowl.

Thanks,
Danny

I finally got some time to do some more work on my Piper Pacer being built from Wendell's Tripacer plans with appropriate modifications. I'm still working on the fuselage and have framed out the tail feathers. I decided to redesign the structure of the tail feathers to save weight. Here's a few pictures:

Hi Guys,

I too am building the hostetler tri pacer. I took some pictures of a friend's full scale tripacer and noticed that the top of fuse from the vertical stab to the top of wing is not the same as on the plans. The top of the fuse on full scale is raised higher and has much more pronounced arc than what the plans show. On the full scale there is much more of an arc and it goes all of the way up to the front spar and beginning of windshield.
I will have to make new formers to get it close to scale. On the plans the arc stops around the rear wing spar and does not have that raised and arc look.
But unless you are going to compete with it I would not even bother changing it. Just thought I would point it out for anyone interested.

If I can get it done in time I want to enter my plane into sportsman class at Top Gun next year.

Here are some pictures if anyone is interested in looking at them.
I will upload three more pictures that I have of this top fuse area. Could not upload all six at the same time due to file size being too large.

I also have some more full scale detailed shots of cockpit, hinges, struts, etc. If anyone is interested in detail of a certain part of the full scale I probably have a shot of it. Just let me know and I can upload the pictures.

Danny

As the photos below show, I have made some more progress on my Pacer version of Hostetler's Tripacer. The right wing is under construction and I hope to start the left wing in the near future.

Still more progress made on my Pacer version of Wendell's Tripacer. The wings, including fowler flaps, have been completed. It is a large model with a wingspan of 115". I will cover with Stits-light and paint with Nelson paints. Power will be an OS 300 or OS 320. Glow driver by SonicTronics. Plane will also have nav lights, flashing beacon and landing lights.

Nice looking pacer. I'm to the point of working out the radio installation. I'm curious about what torque servos you are going to use. I need to get some pics of mine uploaded.

Joel, is your's flying yet?

On my Pacer I'm using HS 705MGs on the elevator, rudder and the flaps; these servos are rated at about 200 oz/in at 6v. On the ailerons I'm using HS475s which are rated at about 75 oz/in at 6v.

Great to see the photos of the planes in progress. I plan to post a few photos in the near future. I have the firewall, engine mounting, wings, and tail feathers framed. Most of the needed accessories ready to go. I have started on the fuselage, and the pictures have been some help already. The Pacer looks as if it may be the first to fly. Sure would like to know what the balancing experiences are. I have the very light YW48B2 on the front, and may have to add some tail weight.

Bill, I did a trial balance on the Pacer and found that with the OS 320, and the plane unpainted, the balance was right on. Keep in mind, however, that my plane does not have the weight of a nose gear/wheel and that I made the tail lighter by making the tail feathers built up rather than solid balsa. I also have my elevator and rudder servos behind the balance point (so that the cabin will be free of servos in the area where the seats will go). Hope this helps.
