I had 2 Sig pumps. Both died within 3 months. After that, I went ahead and bought the Abel Hobbies system. I figured at 40 bucks every three months, that "expensive" 200 dollar system was starting to look affordable.

Just goes to show what some consider "Outrageous" others find good value in. Sometimes paying too little costs more in the long run. I buy snap-on tools when I could buy craftsman tools for 1/3 the price but the crasftsman tools are not of the quality to make a living with in constant use. For me jets are "outrageously priced" but there are plenty of them flying so seems alot of people don't mind spending the money on quality equipment. I for one can't see spending that much money on model airplanes but there are those that do and I won't fault them for it.

This is the pump I am going to go with. Its the same pump that they use in those $200.00 fuel pump can combos. They sell for $54.95 which is a lot cheaper than $200.00, I already have fuel line, fittings and switches ect.

I didn't see it called out in the catalog, but is that pump electrically reversible or do you have to swap hoses ?

RE: Electric fuel pump for gas
I finished my "Kevin Lynch" fueler cans. They were very easy to make total cost less than $70.00 each it took about an hour and a half to finish them both and they work great! I made one for gasoline and one for smoke oil. I can't believe I actually thought about paying $200.00 + for these. Filling and drining my 40% and 33% planes is a snap now.

Kevin,
Nice job! THink you could make a parts list and where to purchase? How did you fasten the parts box to the can? I'd really like something like that. I would also like a tube that connects the vent on the can to the vent on the planes tank so the over fill is caught and does not go on the ramp.
Really nice work!

RE: Electric fuel pump for gas
Here is your shopping list for anyone who wants to make one or two of these.
Fuel Can- Walmart or Home Depot.
Grey Electrical Box With Rubber Seal- Home Depot.
Heavy Duty Plastic Velcro (Need to glue these on with other than the self adheasive)-Home Depot.
Wire-Walmart
Tank Line fittings- Local Hobby Shop.
Large Tygon Fuel Line- Local Hobby Shop.
6 Volt Nica or Nimh you could really power this pump well will a Li Ion but I was just using what I had laying around. - Local Hobby Shop
Switch With Protective Cover (Power On Off)- Radio Shack or Discount Auto Parts.
Misc. Wire Connectors- Discount Auto Parts.
Reverse Polarity Switch (Fill or Empty)- Radio Shack, I got mine at SkyCraft Electrical Surplus Store in Winter Park.
Electric Pump (Model PQ-DC)-http://www.greylor.com/catalog.htm
Most People will already have most of this stuff on hand in your shop but this is what I used and where I got it. I do intend to get a better fuel filter. I am presently using two fine screen type filters, one on the pickup and one on the line going to the pump.

Guys- I just got off the phone with Greylor. Very nice folks, very helpful. I described our application to the gentleman and he told me that he would be happy to sell me the pump, but not if I tell him I intend to pump gas through it. He said that they sell these pumps to one company and he's told that they use them for gas, but it's not what he recommends. I'm gonna keep looking.

RE: Electric fuel pump for gas
Thank you Kevin.
I think I am going to make one.
By the time I am done filling the fuel tank, my arm is about to fall so I need an electric pump.

How many people are using this pump from Greylor? How long have you been using it? I am in the process of ordering one an they are reluctant to sell it if it is to be used for gas...
Jersey Modeler and Abell are both using it.... seems to me that the product is safe... Has theirs been modified?

McMaster says "Fluids must be compatible with ... Buna-N, Delrin, PTFE ..." I wonder if the intermittent nature of our use is why we haven't seen failures. Maybe continuous use would see a breakdown somewhere. Still, why not use the cheaper one available from Aircraft Spruce?

RE: Electric fuel pump for gas
I am guessing the reason they don't want you using it with gas is because a five gallon can of gasoline is pretty much a bomb without an ignition source. If you add their pump and a battery or hook something up wrong there could be an explosion. If they condone its use for gasoline and something goes wrong they may be civilly liable.
