Here is an old favorite link to some vintage float instruction. http://www.seminolerc.com/EZ-Float-Design.html This is an old article from the 80's.
Chuck Cunningham was a float flying guru back then and his information still pertains. He recomends a float that is 75 to 80 % of the distance from the prop hub to the rudder line. I would recomend the 80 %. Not as pretty but much more functional. The tip of the float must project beyond the prop or you wil experience lots of bad! Anyway, it is a starting point. Just make sure to rebalance the model and keep them as light as possible. Planes with floats do not recover from spins near as well as with out them. Personal experience.
Have fun
Thanks for this info.

Built my own with help of a friend. We band sawed white foam to his templates. Then I put a single layer of 6oz glass cloth on with epoxy. Filled and painted them. Built and installed in two weeks. They are only 5lbs complete. Has been a blast and always draws a crowd.
Last winter I stripped the covering, Put all the servos inside, added a light system and recovered it with Stits fabric. added a couple of pounds but it still floats like a glider.

Mark
I'm hoping to make it a little easier than this. I might use the Balsa USA floats. If anyone knows of a better float to use, please let me know.

Thanks, Jim

You can find this article all over the web. Chuck Cunnigham was either writing about float flying or flying his Lazy Ace Biplane.

Jim, why don't you just do the Hempel Cub, he sells floats for them I believe. You're going to be disappointed in the covering on the WM Cub. After about a year the covering color starts to seperate from the clear outer layer. My WM is currently getting recovered in fabric also. Get the 40% Hempel and stick a 150 in it and never look back. Jerry.

Hi Jerry,
I didn't see any mention of floats on Hemple's website, but I'll look into it.

Thanks, Jim

Come on man......the WM cub is a fraction of the cost of the Hempell ( for many reasons). My covering has lasted more than a year. Its all how you take care of things. Also its an easy plane to recover which would still put you at far less than the Hemple if you had to that down the line.

Now don't get me wrong, the Hemple is a great plane but its in price range most don't want to spend on a plane.

I do want to look at all my options as far as a big plane on floats goes, so I appreciate any comparisons.
The price of the WM Cub is good, but price isn't my only consideration. I do think I might prefer a 1/3rd scale plane rather than a 40%er.

Hempel is twice the price, thats a given. WM flies very nice. But, buy the clipped wing version if you end up getting one. DL111 in the nose. At least thats what I did in mine. If you go to SeaCommand floats you can get the CNC cut floats for this size plane. I know several of the Hempel cubs are using SeaCommander floats. Jerry.

Where's the best place to get the 33% clipped wing cub? $750 is about the cheapest I can find it

$750 is a great price, I paid $680 three years ago when our local HobbyTown did a dealer cost sale. The $680 included all shipping costs also. I think dealer cost on it was around $600 and it was $80 in shipping. At that time ordering it throug WorldModels was $900 to my door. Jerry.

A gentlman in Oregon bought Wallace cub gear. He advertises in the swap shop and makes a scale gear for this plane.

I just ordered a Nitro Planes 1/3 scale clipped wing cub for 399 plus ship....If you don't mind the not so scale apperance but want a large cub to abuse doing uncublike aerobatics check this out. I will be looking for a used DA85 or zdz super 80. I know I will probably recover it also when it starts looking ragged. paint the cowl white and it almost looks like the WM cub and for half the price.

wood would be my guess...I'm just hoping it's not a 2x4....ha Near as I can tell the wing is built up, going by the pictures anyhow as you can see ribs. The landing gear also looks small as do the wheels but that is typical for the chinese planes. You usually have to make upgrades and I'm sure this one is no different but not 400.00 dollars worth. As I said, if your into scale this is not the plane for you, buy a Balsa Usa cub and spend hours building and detailing to scale. I envy the guys who have the patience.

I was looking at the pics from the smaller version, they use a al tube spar which I like! Makes it much easier to put together!!

I just ordered a 1/3 blue and white clipped wing from the same store- $600 + $150 shipping. $750 total.

I agree, the "Toughlon" covering is crap, but my 1/3 Super Cub is~ 5 years old and most of the covering is original... But I must admit- about every day flying I end up recovering a little more LOL!

Oh- did I mention that I got 3rd place in Sportsman IMAC flying my Super Cub wit a DA-100?

Or that I fly it in an annual Harvest airshow with a 9-11 commemoration?
