World Models 1/3 Super Cub
#2

This thing's going to be great fun! I really enjoy my WM 1/3 cub! So do the fellow pilots at clubs and spectators too....in fact my 1/3 cub just won the peoples choice award on Saturday in the Beat The Heat fly in Flagstaff Arizona. The WM 1/3 cub really attracts people, even people that don't really care much for cubs. They can't not like this one! Especially when its hovering over the runway and pulls out with an 80cc twin gasser in it.

I just bought a WM 1/3 Super Cub. I did not buy the 1/3 J-3, even though I love Cubs. The1/3 J-3 from WM is non-scale. THere is no top Longeron and it is flat on top...not Cub-like...more Model Airplane-like.
I Bought the Super ...never had a Super before...I fly a 1/4 BalsaUSA J-3 all the time.
I was thinking of putting my 3W 106 in the Super with 64 oz of Smoke , Camera's, drop box, the works. But it seems the GT-80 does it well....my 106 is lighter I think. Will have to back off the throttle curve and restrict power.
Are there any build threads here for the Super 1/3??? I wqould imagine the stock gear shouldbe replaced right off the bat with one of the better articulated setups, eh??

This looks like yet another standoff (read: stand waaaaay back!) scale plane to me. If this plane was built as it looks in full scale....the cabin framing would be built of salt treated 2'' by 6'' studs. And what's up with mounting the servos for the tail on the OUTSIDE?? Geez. Looks good on my H9 Twist, but a !/3 scale CUB?? C'mon![sm=lol.gif]...Laughable!

Unfortunately, it is an ARF......which means ...I will be laughing and smiling while I am flying it in just a few days.
Ostensibly high enough that no one notices it's Non-Scale flaws. Laughable.

The flip side is , I could be crying whilst building it , from sticks, trying to make it look scale.
Laughable, yes, Cheap Fun, too.

Recieved the WM Super Cub 1/3 today.
Great condition, A#1.
Amazing hinging job, all metal in hinges, perfectly done. All surfaces. Unreal sturdy struts...solid Alum covered with wood. Brass connectors on the struts.
Nice tail whhel and inflatable tires for the main gear. Main gear is Balsa USA Wire style. Cockpit and tray all fit perfectly. Doors brass piano hinged. Tail feathers fit tight and snug perfectly square without adjustment. Dove tail , and mortis tenon joint style connection.
Wings perfect with strings for pulling through the leads. Flaps undercut slightly to conceal gap when raised...nice. They only go DOWN as a result, no chance for fullspan ailerons...Thats OK..these ailerons are enormous.
Cowl is fiberglass, with a dummy clear cowl, for hole sizing and transfer of holes. VERY NICE.
I could nit pick a few things on it, but it's overall grade A for a 700 dollar ARF.
I believe the "standoff scale" label fits well. THis could also be the great base for a kit bash to really good scale. Its built well straight and true, the firewall will easily take a 100cc plant, I am having to space out my 3W 106 to get the distance, and I am going to be cutting the cowl for the cylinders to show. ....standoff scale. Wink....
Gotta get back to work.

Vid taken today, will be up later tonite , with pics.
Just got home from the field, I was out from 7:30am till 7:30 pm.
Maiden was delightfully uneventful. 8 flights, I was busy training and flying other peoples' planes. After a few flights I had her flap modes dialed in, a little (7%) of down elevator in two different flap settings. Hands off mid flap 6mph and less flying. On a dime touchdowns....when the Idle is set right.
Partial flap takeoffs in 6-10 feet.
I would highly recommend the 6 inch Du-Bro Inflatables, they work great. The stockers were a little thin, and might have worked if one of the filler valves hadn't failed.
Also, articulated landing gear is high on the list for replacement. I am very experienced Cub Flyer, and would have no problem keeping the stock gear, and never damaging it, but, with a few hard landings it would get bent up by someone without that "Cub Touch".
The Chinese weird size Phillips heads screws should just be pitched from the outset of the build, IMO. J-U-N-K.
Anyone who has been putting off a Balsa USA build of this bird for space and time reasons , should consider this ARF, knowing hardware replacement is a given.
50+ People watched this bird at different times today, and it was a hit. The 3W 106, with spark plugs and a little cyl showing, made it look badass, and threw it around like a Hyper-Cub. and putted it around, burbling like an Old-timer with Helium in the wings.
I will post the vid in an hour or so.

Pretty cool but man way too much power you can fly that thing idling!!!! so a 50cc will be freat power for it too,,or you need the nose weight????

I was thinking that same thing after viewing again....it took off in what...15 ft. or so? It probably could use a G45 or G62 in the nose. I notice you were doing some tight figure eights and some tight circles overhead. Do you have trees and other obstructions around your field or were you just keeping it close for the first flight?

HI,
Yes it will takeoff in 8 feet, did so multiple times without flaps on takeoff.
a G-62 will not balance this plane without major ballast or added equipment.....batteries, on board start, smoke , and a brick.
The 3W is just slightly lighter than the GT-80 with magneto and spring starter, and it balanced it with the batteries in the middle of the radio deck on the CG. Actually it may be a tad tail heavy...it balanced right on the mark with the tail slightly below the "tail up" landing stance.
So, yes a 50 class would fly it, but, no vertical, or limited vertical (G-62).
It is a beast, and a gentle flying floater with the flaps. Easily trimmed out in flight modes with some down elevator.
I fly in very, very tight park, where most would not fly a bird like this. But, I have mastered Cub Flying with my Balsa USA 1/4 with the O.S. Gemini 1.60 twin. I flat turn it like a Volkswagon, on a dime in the park below the trees, one wheel roll outs and touch and goes.
This bird is no diferent , and the 1/3 Super Cub is a joy in the wind for aerobatics as well, great hammer heads with a push of elevator, gentle aileron/rudder spins, Crabbing, slipping, Split S and and just about all the basics, I have not done much inverted , but some. I am tweaking the motor still, and am conscious of a blurble or a hesitation during certain manuevers. But , that will pass, it much better today, and very close to it's final tune.
I had to do a pushover from a bad immelman that almost snapped on me, and it pushed right over. With throttle....big throttle..
THe oversize motor is overkill for sure , but taking a 28 pound Cub into virtually unlimited vertical with only 5/8's usable throttle available, because I restricted it, is a showstopper.
If you need the weight.....I ask the question....WHY NOT MOTOR??

I am having the cowl split , so I can baffle it, and the caps will get changed out to something smaller. I had the 106, and used it, and I am not regretting it. It is a balls out fun plane , and wringing it out with smoke will being throwin' down big-time............
