Default What plane is a good match for OS 160 twin?

I know this seems kinda backwards, but I have the OS 160 on a shelf and I am looking for ideas on what plane is a good match for this engine.

Already considering:
Cub
4 Star 120
GP Stearman
Rascal 110

What have you been successful with? Kits or ARFs, it doesn't matter

I enjoy all types of flying, so any suggestions you have will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

We have a fellow at our club that flies the Rascal 110 with the OS 160 twin. It does quite well.

How about the Pacific Aeromodels GeeBee Y 120. It has good moments and about an 82" wingspan. Don't confuse this GeeBee with the racers (R-1 & R-2). It has similar proportions to the Giant Super Sportster. The quality of the model is very good. I had a hard time finding any wrinkles to remove before I got started on it. Here's a pointer to their page: [link=http://www.pacaeromodel.com/GeeBee/geebee.htm]http://www.pacaeromodel.com/GeeBee/geebee.htm[/link]

Nice... Laird SS,

That is something different. Do you think the OS 160 twin will fit nicely in the cowl?

Thanks,
Paul

A 1/4 scale Cub would be perfect for a 160 twin

Yes CK1, I agree on the cub.

I have a Dynaflite kit of the 1/4 scale PA18 Super Cub in the attic. And that is why I bought the OS 160.

But just wanted to explore what others have found success with using this engine

They make excellent sport aerobatic flers when mounted in the SIG or old Hanger Nine cap 232s.

Below is a picture of one in a H-9 CAP recovered in the Breightling Scheme. I have well over a thousand flights on the 160 twins and have found them to be great sport engines.

Hey Gremlin Castle,

In the H-9 Cap, how did the OS 160 balance out? Did you have to add much tail weight?

No tail weight necessary. I fact the fuselage and tail group were lightened to the point of being fragile in this particular airframe.
I also flew both the 120 and 160 twins in a Greatplanes SupreSporster 90/120 with a cheek cowl nose bash.
none of the three CAPs or the Super Sportster required tail weight.

That Hanger 9 Taylor Craft is looking like a pretty good fit. Must read more of that thread.

Thanks, jplozza

Hello FlyBy8,

How about a 1/3 Scale 1928 HEATH BABY BULLET RACER ? The Original Aircraft had a 32Hp twin with the cylinders sticking out each side of the cowl. 1/3 Scale Model has a 77 in Wingspan 918 sq in Area. I have a Saito 100 Twin in mine, but it can use more.

I own the Harold Osborne Plans and can send you all the details. [email protected]

Regards,
Ken

One of my buds has a GTM Dr1. The OS 160 works really well in the plane.

OS 160= Sig 1/4 scale cub, Topflight 1/5 scale Stinson Reliant, BUSA 1/4 scale Cub, BUSA 1/4 scale Sopwith Pup, The list goes on,the O.S. 160 twin is a smooth running, user friendly, engine, producing good power for 1/5 scale and 1/4 scale classic scale aircraft .For the RCU watchdogs who might accuse me of being a O.S. shill, the Magnum 160 twin is comparable. As always, when buying on RCU or Fleabay, N.I.B. is the preferred condition.
