This was a very nice thread, and the only "build thread" I have found on the Hanger 9 1/4 scle J3 Cub - What happened? Too bad it had to die....

Going to go from electric to gas power. Had the Cub for several years and it flies OK on Electric but am going to gas just about across the page. Still have a few electrics, but not many. A few pics on the change out. Really nothing new, but am running a G-23 I happen to have and some may like to see how I did the mounting. The engine required about an inch spacer off the firewall, so used some G-23 bolt patterned plywood parts I had on hand from a previous model and epoxied them together to make a full one inch thickness. Those four holes are not going to be used here. I think I was making a vibration isolation mount for the model this engine was going into. The G-23 bolts in from the rear, but will have some 10-32 bolts holding the new plywood mount onto the firewall so I can remove later if needed. I could go ahead and epoxy in in, but sure as I do that, it will need to come off later, Murphy's Law. At this point, the cowl comes off without disassembling the engine. Will this power the Cub? Yes, I have every reason to think so. The little engine really screams with the right prop. It will fly the Cub with scale like flight. With the big 105 inch wing, will have plenty of lift, but won't be overly fast. In other words, "Fly it like a Cub!"

First is a pic of the previous E-Flite 110 mounting.

Following are the new works.

Got a bit more done, but not a lot different from the last pics. Did some cleanup of the old holes in the forward fuselage and recovered with Monokote. Moved the Rx switch to the cockpit for distance from the magneto ignition. Added a fuel dot. And a few other things. Goal is to keep the look as clean as the electric power was.

I bought one used and it flew great until some formation flying with a 40% CUB took out the right wing. Luckily, the struts kept the damaged wing on the plane and it was able to be landed. The left wing, gear and tail feathers are OK.

This thread will provide me a good reference for building up its replacement since I bought the CUB used and simply outfitted it with a receiver and new battery then flew it. I only had about a dozen flights on it. Bummer. .

I have her ready to fly when the field dries out. Lots of rain here today. She CG'd right on the money without any lead needed. Hope it will be an effortless flight with the new gas engine.

Prof100, glad you made the landing somewhat intact. I had a mid-air with my Sr Telemaster vs a 25 pound Yak. I managed to land intact, but he hit the trees and never flew again. First mid-air in 25 years of flying. Bound to happen one day. Yours looks easily repaired.

Anyone have a spare wing tube? Bent mine today and need a new one....have 2 Taylorcraft PNP ones laying around that are about 2" too long.....maybe I could cut one? Also had to order some new Landing gear parts as my "hover landings" today in the wind didn't work out to well.....haven't crashed in 10 years and today I smacked my cub hard...lesson learned!

Airplane is a wonderful model....I hope H9 brings them back...you cannot Beat a cub!

If you have a wing tub that is the correct diameter, but too long, there is no reason why it can't be cut to the proper length.

I have the H9 1/4 J3 cub and would like to use either the Saito FG21 4 stroke gas or Saito FG30B 4 stroke gas. I like to fly scale, no float at this time. Which would be a better option? Also, would I have to cut up the cowl in order to use either of these option? Thank you in advance for your guidance!!!
