RE: Half Scale Fokker DVI
Just awesome Paul! Looking forward to seeing it at OHDP!
I recently acquired a 1/3 scale M1c project, the original builder has cut down a stainless steel Wok to use as a cowl and spinner. It looks pretty close to the correct outline. I don't know how big Woks come, but it may be an option. Also, some of the smaller M1c models I've seen use a built up cowl from shaped balsa on a ply frame. Looks pretty good, and works because it's all behind that big ol' spinner. I can send you a pic or two (of the stainless cow/spinner) if you're interested. I also have a bunch of pics of The Shuttleworth Collections's M1c that took on a trip to the UK a couple of years ago if that might help. Send me a PM with your snail mail address if you'd like a CD. Good luck!
Sorry to hijack you're thread Paul.

Wow, love that pilot... where's his girl friend ? Maybe if he wore a Stella head band you could get some corporate sponsorship... Ya know "powered by Stella"...
I like that top wing, looks big and strong plus it looks straight. Marvelous job, I know you guys have been working overtime to get it done. See you soon... Glenn

Hi Paul @ Barry
I have been watching your build with great admiration. I really am excited for you guys and also to see the D-6 finished. Do you think you will make Rhinebeck again this yr. Sure hope it's a better one than last. Believe me in the last 26 yrs. I've only seen it rain twice, so it was bad luck last yr being your first. You boys sure are doing a wonderful job on that airplane. I wish now I had just built one out of wood also. I'm sure it would have been flying for quite a while. Oh well, so I guess I have a hanger queen instead. But a nice one. Do you think it would be possible to lend me or rent me the tools needed to rivet my cowl, and also to purchase the rivets. I will pay all shipping costs. This would be a great help as I have no means of doing this. I really would like to get the cowl finished and painted so I can bring the D-8 to Rhinbeck for show this yr. Let me know. I thank you. Keep up the great work and good luck.

Hi Tom!
Thanks for the kind words. We are planning to do a maiden flight on this Sunday. We are planning to go to Rhinebeck regardless of the crappy weather, we had a great time. As for your hanger queen, if you ever want to trade, we can do that at Rhinebeck! (LOL)
As for the cowling rivets, I will take some pictures of it and give you a description of the install in the next few days. ...sorry for the delay....as you can imagine, the pressure that Glenn Torrance has put on us for the ODP show is almost overwhelming!
Thanks for your patience.

Tom,
I just sat down to do pictures and realized I forgot to take the pictures of the cowl for you. I will get them posted tomorrow (later today really)!

Von Helmet just told my grandson that HE cannot have a ride in this plane!
The next post should show the body, stab and elevator painted. THe top wing should be covered and ready for paint. THe fully welded struts will be installed and the landing gear will be permanently installed. Its going to be a looooooooong day![sm=cry_smile.gif]

RE: Half Scale Fokker DVI
Hey Tom!
Here are some pics of my cowling and my feaux rivets. I tried to use my bucking bar and rivet setter but the aluminum was just too soft to maintain a straight form. So, I improvised and went to Micro Fasteners and got button head screws (I think it was 2-56 size.) I set the pattern on the cowling, drilled a bunch of holes and installed a bunch of screws and nuts and then filled in the screw allen head hole with body filler. It really works for me, because the screw length actually holds the lower cowling from swinging past the firewall. See pics.
With my spare cowling piece and my extra face plate, I've been working with different rivet setters and really have had no luck keeping the cowling straight.
My particular fix may not help with your situation...

the way I've done the rivits for cowls and gear doors are to put the rivit set into a vise and hold the cowl by hand with the rivit in place on the set and flatten the back with a small ball peen hammer. it works great and you don't end up with those smiley faced rivits. (if your careful)

Hi Guys
Thanks for that post. I now see how you did it. Great idea on simulating the rivets. That is how I will do it also. Thanks a bunch. I sure wish you good luck on the test flight. I'm sure you will be very successful. I bet she won't want to come down. Those D-6's float for ever. I do hope I can maybe get a chance to get a go at the control's??????????? I can't believe how big she is!!! WOW Very impressive I gotta say. Great job, Looking forward to more pic's. Talk to ya soon.

Im finishing up my 1/3 DVI and I wanted to know how you routed your aileron servo wires. I see a pic of them in your last post but I cant tell how you did them. Are they running through the strut then out a hole prior to the JB weld and cotton inside the strut or did you have the wire go all the way though the cotton and JB weld using a brass tub or something? I guess what Im asking is how you did yours and if I need to do anything special to assure the JB weld will hold with the servo wire going through it.
