Hi drdoom;

Thanks for the input.
I had included the concerns to Tommy re the rear window when I first received the pics.I sent him pics of the full size aircraft for reference.
Agreed, needs some work to make it scale. Tommy has replied and indicated there will be an adjustment to the plug.

Will send more pics when I receive them from Tommy.

Stay in touch.

Regards
Randy

Hi Fellows;

Have been away on business,which tooksome time away from the C-185 build. I am now back in action and good to go.

Just a quick update re the C-185 build.
Received an e-mail from Tommy, he is doing the detail to the stabilizer and fin and will send the pics when completed. Once received I will post them on the thread.
Tommy has also done some additional mods to the cowling (sloping the nose) in keeping with the C-185.

Will be in touch.

Regards
Randy

Hi Fellows;

Have just e-mailed Tommy fora progress report andpics of the C-185 for the thread.

I know he has been busy with other builds and commitments. I believe he has taken over the production line for the 27% C-182 from Austar. That's a good move, he will do a good job on it. Will no doubt be the same quality as his 35% C-182.

I had received one of the first 27% C-182's which needed some mods and corrections. (Over all a great model, I still would like to distribute these over here in US and Canada).
Thesechanges werenoted to the factory and adjustments to be made, however the factory discontinued the model due to financial reasons and the US dollar at the time.

Will keep you posted on both, this thread will deal with the C-185.

Regards
Randy

Hi Randy,
any news from Tommy's Cessna 185?
mine will be finished next month. here's some of the pics.

the cowl is a big dissapointment for me since the engine is 'popped-out' from the cowl. is that impossible to hide the entire engine inside the cowl? the rudder is another dissapointment for me since it was painted, not carved. i think the whole wings, elevator and rudder wasn't carved for the details. that's suck.

but that is my first impression from what i see from the pics. i haven't see the actual plane for sure. will be update the information for you guys.

thanks!

Hi Irvan;

Nice to hear from you and see the progress of your C-185.
Cowling size and engine selection is always a concern especially when attempting to hide the engine in the cowling. Sometimes we have to "give and take" a little to ensure we have the proper engine and power needed to get the model into the air.

I have had discussions with Tommy on this issue with the 35% C-185 since the cowling dimensions are different from the 35% C-182. I'm sure a DA 150 or 3W 157 will fit fine in the cowling and have sufficient HP for wheel application. However mine will be flown on wheels and floats. When a model is flown on floats my experience is to have enough (hp) for a solid take off, agreed once in the air the extra power is not required. I will further comment on this point once the model has been built, flown on wheels and then floats.

Depending on how scale you want your model to look you can always add the detail yourself, but agreed, it does take time. I had forwarded a "ton" of pictures to Tommy and mentioned to take his time with the panel and rivet detail on the plug.

Looking at the pic of your elevator is it tappered at the trailing edge?

Tommy hasn't been in touch with me over the past few days. (Must be busy, hopefully on the C-185 plug). I will be e-mailing him again today with any pics and updates re the 35% C-185. Hope to get some info soon to you fellows. Hope to also get the model and start assembling it!!!!!!!!!

Stay in touch.

Regards
Randy

Hi Irvan;

Yes, there are two sources for the plans. I have a set of 1/4 scale C-180 plans from Mammoth Scale Plans that I received a few years ago.
( Older style C-180 with the thinner fin).

There is also a fellow from over here in Quebec Canada, Mr Aerodesign (Martin Rousseau) that has a 95" C-185 plan that he can enlarge to what ever size you like.
I have not seen these plans up close. I think his web page is www.mraerodesign.securicom.ca or Goggle Mr Aerodesign.

Let me know if you need any other info.

Hi Irvan;

Leave this with me for a few days, I'll have to pull out the plans of the C-180 I have and confirm they came from Mammoth Scale Plans. I believe they were drawn by Bob Morse. (www.bhplans.com may now have the ownership to these if they still carry it).

Another option will be to contact www.precisioncutkits.com in the US who offer a lazer cut kit of the model. They may also have a set of plans or know where to get them.

Will be in touch.

Hi Fellows;

Just posting a few pics that Tommy sent of the fin, rudder, stailizer and elevator.
Fin and Rudder look pretty good now, certainly in keeping with the 185.
Stab and Elevator were modified from the C-182, also looks good, still working on a few details to make it like the 185.

He will have them finished in a few days and then assemble on the fuse and wing alignment.

More pics to come. Will look forward to this build once everything is completed.
Would still like to have a C-182 in the hangar with this one but one thing at a time. Oh yes, expence also.

Regards
Randy

wow! amazing works from Tommy.

i kinda dissapointed with my cessna. from the pics he sent to me, it seems to me that the plane was build as it, without any details as expected. 1 long year waiting, and it's not worth it.

soon after that plane finished and arrived, i will post it here.

Hi Irvan;

So far so good with the 35% build, I've been working closely with Tommy re the plug fabrication etc. Thw wings should be OK, the fuselage will be the next final detailing job.

I pulled out the C-180 plans, as I figured, they were drawn by Bob Morse and printed by Mammoth Scale Plans. I called Precision Cut Kits today to see if they also carry these plans since they offer the lazer cut components. (No answer, will try again Monday).

Stay in ouch.

Tommy, Randy,

I just discovered this thread and I am really thrilled to see the 185 being produced in such a large scale. Congratulations on your efforts and the work you have already done! Fantastic!

It might already be too late to make any modifications on your plug, but, as on your large Cessna 182, the top of the engine cowl on the Cessna 185 plug appears to me to be too flat. Viewed from the side, a distinct curve from the windshield forward and down to the prop spinner is very characteristic for this plane. Take a look at the 3-view earlier in this thread. If you are able to correct this section of the plug, you'll be a big step closer to scale and you'll have one more customer!

I wish you success and perseverence with your project,

Matt

Hi Matt;

Thanks for your interest and comments for the C-185 build, that what this forum and discussion thread will be all about. Regarding the cowling modifications, agreed, the C-185 has more of a curve to it. Tommy and I had dicussed this issue a while ago and the mods should now be done putting more of a curve toward the nose.

I have put off final engine selection until the cowling is completed, the inside dimensions are different than the C-182. Looks like it will be a little narrower curving toward the nose.

Tommy indicates that the plugs should be completed in two weeks, just putting the final detailing of panel lines and rivets on the plugs.

Stay in touch.

Hi Randy;Any updates on the 185?The fuse will be in one complete section,not cut in half aft of the rear window is that correct?I think I would prefer a one piece fuse.Is Tommy adding a tunnel for cannisters on this one?Gotta keep the engine noise down a bit.When do you think you might receive the first 185?Are you still thinking of distributing over here?I am still interested in getting one.

Hi Steve;

Just sent another e-mail to Tommy re updates and pics. I know he has been busy with C-182 orders, the C-185 plugs were getting the final touches of panel lines and rivets. Those are the pics I'm waiting for. Should be done by now, I'm hoping.

I have also asked him to send a cowling once done so I can get started on the engine and exhaust installation. (Mocked up).
I did have a previous conversation with him re the seperation of the fuse. We elected to have the model seperated behind the rear window for a few reasons. The first was install of the tail section servos and wiring, accessibility into the main cabin area, transportation and for the float install. That being said I know that he could do it in one piece. Don't know if this is the case afetr the molds have been made. Will ask him.

I'm sure cannisters could be accommodated with a tunnel system, would require having exhaust holes on the bottom of the fuse to release the heat. May take away from scale appearance depending on your preference. I fly 35% and 40% aerobatic models with cannister systems, great muffling, just needs to have alot of air circulation in, around and out of the tunnel area.

I'm hopeful !!!!!! that the plugs, molds and finished model will be done by the end of August. That then leaves the time spent for shipping from Thailand.
I would consider distributing the model over here in Canada and the US but would have to speak with Tommy if he is agreeable with that arrangement. Prior to committing, I'm pretty "fussy",I would like to makes sure the model has turned out the way we thought it would. (In all areas). Appearance, assembly, flying performance etc.

Just heading away for a few days to get maintenance done up north. Will give you an update when I return.

Regards
Randy

Hi Fellows:

A quick update, I wanted to get started on the engine selection and install with an exhaust system to have a single stack exit the cowling such as on the full size aircraft.

I have been in contact with a few companies over here in the US and it appears it may be possible without causing over heating issues etc. etc.
The cowling for the C-185 is a little narrower and curves toward the nose more than the C-182 that he manufactures.
Tommy will be sending the C-185 cowling on Monday.

The engines I would like to see as an option for the model would be (DA 150, 3W 157) Wheel application.
(DA 170, DA 200, 3W 170 standard, 3W 170 competition series or 3W 212 B4) Float application.

I'm sure we will have discussions re the larger engine selection for the model once the build is under way, remember my C-185 will be flown on floats. I want to make sure that the model will take off from the water with "authority", agreed once airborne, I won't need all the power.

Anyway, for now I will post the pics once I get the cowling and start to test fit the engines.

Regards
Randy

Hi Fellows;

Waiting for a response from Tommy. He indicated that the cowling would be finished by Monday and then send via air freight. Also asked him when expects to pull the model from the mold.

Not to put the "cart before the horse".

Intially I had ordered the C-185 in primer gray. My thought was, if any slight mods had to be made re scale appearances etc. I wouldn't be dealing with or cutting into a nice new finish and the other was, (hopefully not), but in the event of damage when shipped it is alot easier repair and paint job. After saying all that, I think I will get the model in plain white from him. He uses Standox automotive paint which is available over here in US and Canada. If no mods required and if the paint quaility is good all I have to do is the trim. If the model needs mods or the paint not satisfactory, a light sanding and I can spray on the final white coat.
Plus, I haven't chosen my paint scheme yet.

Was at a local "Fly In / Splash In" on the weekend. Alot of float and wheeled aircraft. C-172, 180, 185, 206, Beavers, Cubs, Maules, Stinsons etc.
Got to have the model of the C-185 there for the next time re display, Oh yes, on floats.

See attached pics.

Anyway, once I receive the cowling and the model at some point, it will be "down to business" for the build and no more full size pics.

Will be in touch.

Regards
Randy
