Hi Steve;

Go figure, we probably passed each other a few times. You were on the one side of the float ramp and I was on the other for the Turbo Beaver pics.
The pilot was taking the volunteer workers from Orillia up for a flight.
See attached pic.

I took a look at your (aviation art) great pictures, I wish I had that talent. Look forward to seeing your future art work.
Flying down in your Challenger sounds like alot of fun.
All being well I hope to have the C-185 on floats and a few other models for next years Fly In. (If they are interested).

Stay in touch.

Regards
Randy

Hi Saul;

Nice to hear from you.
You are correct, Tommy is doing a great job on the C-185 fabrication. It's certainly taken alot of e-mails, pics, drawings and discussion but I'm sure it will be what I'm looking for upon completion. He also looks to add this to his hangar for others interested in the 185.

Hopefully the fabrication is coming to an end and then onto the build, paint and trim. It's getting a little more exciting nearing the end with the pics he sends.

Keep up the great work on the C-182 thread.

regards
Randy

Hi Fellows;

A few pics from Tommy re the C-185 cowling. He is finishing it now, the final product will require rivets, landing light sockets and air intake. He's done a pretty good job on it when comparing to the full size cowling. See attached pics.
He should send it in a few days.

Will be in touch.

Randy

Hi Fellows;

Looks like Tommy has sent the cowling and should arrive in the next few days. This one is not fully detailed, panel lines only , no rivets. This cowling will be used for engine sizing and exhaust location.

I have been having dicussions with Ryan from Seacommander Floats re the C-185 conversion. By good fortune he is willing to assist me with the change over.
Alot of things to discuss and specs. to look at before the fabrication. If you have never checked out his web site of what he has available take a look www.seacommander.com

I have purchased a number of floats from him in the past, he does an excellent job and is a great fellow to deal with.

Will let you know when the cowling arrives.

I like the floats they make ,I wasn't happy with the scale mounting system using screws to mount the brackets to the floats however.Maybe it was just me and my hard landings i had a few times but the screws started to come loose and then strip insided the float.I have the 1/4 scale 2000 series for my J-3 they show in the gallery pics.I eventually went with brass inserts in the float that accepted 4-40 bolts..
Nice floats though.

Sea Commander also sells airfoil shaped struts that are excellent to use as wing struts. I bought a set for my Hostetler 30% Cessna 152. It save a hell of a lot of time. No need to carve the wing struts out of wood.

Hi Fellows;

Agreed re the brass inserts, I have also used them on the bottom of wings and the fuselage to hold on the wing struts. The fact of using screws supplied with some models for each assembly and disassembly just doesn't cut it.

The airfoiled tubing is great, I have also used it to sleeve over a flat piece of metal for a semi scale appearance for float struts etc.

Heading north for a few days, one of my jobs is to get pics and specs of a EDO 3430 float.

Will be in touch.

Hi Snobird;

Welcome to the thread.

I have had discussion with Tommy re the distribution of the model over here in US and Canada, I would first like to build and test fly the model to ensure it's quality etc.
Agreed, shipping from Thailand is very expensive. Air freight is approx. $1100.00 - $1200.00 US. About 1 week delivery.
By boat is approx. $500.00 - $600.00 US, will take approx. 30 - 40 days.

Regards
Randy

Hi Fellows;

Here are a few pics of the cowling just before being sent. It should arrive next week, then down to business re engine sizing etc. The split cowling was as a result of my request due to engine accessibility, ease re cowling installation of scale exhaust and placement of cooling baffles for the engine.

Looks like the wings have also been pulled from the mold, detailing is being done on the tail section and the fuselage should be finished this month.

Will be in touch.

Randy

Hi Fellows;

A few pics of the C-185 wings drying after being pulled from the mold with a light coat of primer.
I am expecting the cowling any day !!!!!, I have tracked it into Canada and now depends on Customs and how fast they move !!!!

Will send pics of the cowling once it arrives.

Randy

Hi Fellows;

I just received the cowling from Tommy, had a little "glitch" with the post office but resolved that issue.

Anyway, after many e-mails, discussions, drawings, dimensions and pics Tommy has done a great job on the cowling. Top, front, side views, tapered nose (upper and lower sections) look like the full size cowling.

As previously indicated this cowling does not have all the final detail on it, ( landing light sockets, air breather opening, panel lines, rivets and exhaust opening) this will be used for engine sizing and exhaust placement.

Preliminary measurements show that the following engines will fit within the cowling.
D/A 150
3W157
3W170
3W 212 B4

So for the folks wanting to fly this model on wheels only, and after seeing the C-182 performance, the 150 size engine looks about right.
The C/F spinner is just a trial to get an idea of spinner size for the 185. (It's 4.5").

See attached pics.

Regards
Randy

For all those who are reading this thread you may not be aware that there is also a seperate thread on the TMMY 35% C-182.
The reason why I mention this, is because it is an excellent thread with alot of corresponding ideas that are similar to the C-185.

For example I have had discussion about engine selection that they have used on the 182. Remembering that alot of these fellows have already test flown their models.
Looks like the DA 150 is sufficient power and also properly weighted for the model.

Interesting decision I will have to make knowing I would like to have more "steam" because of the float application however I don't want to put more weight in the nose than I have to.
(Example DA 150, 3W 157/170 approx. 8 lbs. the 3W 212 12 lbs.)

Always something to consider !!!!!!!!!

cgcrc, did you look at the new DA 200, four cyl. engine ? I believe it's about 9.5" front to back,(you can see it on their web site ? )

Hi Snobird;

Thanks for your reply, I'm just waiting for the full spec sheet of the DA 200 and the DA 170.

Agreed, the DA 200 is another choice. The length is a little shorter than the 3W212, the width (spark plug cap to spark plug cap) I believe is the same as there DA 100 since they have combined the two to make the 200 series. Measuring the DA 100 I have is approx. 11" wide. (unofficial measurement), it's in a Extra 330L within the cowling.

If the DA 170 has the same exterior sizing as the DA 150 it is also another choice.

Will be in touch.

Hi Rossco:

Nice to hear from you. So far so good with the C-185 build, it takes alot of time i.e. discussions, drawing, diagrams, pictures, dimensions and then the building of the plugs etc. etc.
However as mentioned, things are starting to come together. I think the other delay is partly due to the popularity of his C-182. He has received a number of orders for that model which understandably takes him away from the C-185.

One thing for certain, if the cowling is any example of how the rest of the model will look, it will be a fine piece of work and a nice addition to his hangar for those interested in a C-185.

Re the C-188, no I haven't approached him on that issue. I figure I will let another modeler "carry on the tradition" for the C-188.
I still have alot of things to consider re the C-185 and also once the model is finished on wheels my job isn't finished, I will continue with the float conversion.
By good fortune Ryan from Seacommander is assisting me in this area.

Lots of work already completed, lots of work still to do !!!!!!

Will be in touch.

Randy

Hi Fellows;

A few pics of the tail section that Tommy sent today. It sure does look like a C-185.
Although I don't have these pieces in my hand to size up. After seeing the job he did on the cowling, I'm very impressed and know the quailty will be the same.

So, wings completed, tail section completed, cowling almost completed (add detailing) just the fuselage left and should be done by the end of Spetember.

Will be in touch.

Hi Steve;

Agreed, I'm very pleased so far with Tommy's fabrication of the model. We had previous discussions and exchanged pics and dimensions of the tail section to ensure accurracy. Considering that this is the only method of communication that we have had he's done a great job.
I havn't seen the detail up close yet of the panel lines and rivets, but looks pretty good from the pics he has sent.

I will be quite interested to see the fuse once done. Will post as soon as I receive it.

Stay in touch.

Regards
Randy
