I am concerned with putting the G26 on there it will be very NOSE Heavy and I will have to add huge weight to the tail then it will be a tank. The G26 is a full 16 ounces heavier than the G20. Imagine how many sticks of stick on weight that is. Plus, the 4500 mah battery I got for it also weighs in at like a pound for the electronic ignition. I fear I will end up with a 16.5 pound model and its supposed to be like 15 with the G20
gade600sdi,

If you think it's going to be nose heavy then just move your battery pack for your onboard equipment towards the tail until you hit the CG. Shouldn't have to add any weight.

Zippi, according to UPS I should have my engines today. I was hoping you would get yours first so you could do the guinea pig routine. Looks like it might be me. I still have to do my wings yet anyway but maybe I can get her up on Sunday. The servo actuated ignition switch actually worked out very well.

There is no need for such a big battery for an electronic ignition.
Most modern ignitions only draw in the order of 100mAh to 400mAh depending on RPM. As an example, the Rcxel draws a max of 430mAh at 8,000RPM and less than a 100mAh at idle. That's 45 hours of idling time

I believe he has what Zenoah recommends. Zenoah ignitions are power hogs big time. Don't understand what they were thinking on that one. I do believe that you could go with a 2200 or so and fly all day. I would recommend Leptron batteries. It's all I use and they are awesome.

I had a Saito 182 TD in the old Taylorcraft and it was fully aerobatic when both cylinders were working BUT I had to cut a large hole in the top of the cowl for the carbs . Just changed to a roto 35 petrol (gas) which I really like.

Yes on the ignition they show 2700 mah battery is out of flying time in about 60 minutes...say 3 flights. I got a 4500 mah battery so I can fly all day, at least 5-6 hours with comfort and yes I agree the Zenoah ignition must be a hog on batteries based on what they recommend. I got that based on the chart in the Zenoah manual. I guess I could have had a spare and switched packs every so often but not ideal either.

What RPM would be expected from the Zenoah on a 16 x 6, I'm just trying to compare it to the Saito FG-20
Sorry dale missed your post on engine size.Saito is being coy about hp figures for the fg20.Best i can give you from what i've read is static thrust 4.7kgs on a 16x6.Prop figures are; 15x8=9100 and 16x6=8600 and 17x6=8200.Hope this helps.

DLE just arrived and it's not mounted yet but it doesn't look like there will be a bunch of large holes in the cowl. They are quite tiny.

Just for the FYI, the Zenoah ignitions draw close to 2.4 amps during operation, not the 100 - 400 most other manufacturers draw. So a 2700 battery will give you 1 hour and a 4500 will give you 2 hours flying time at best.

Not sure why it is like this, but it is currently what the system delivers.

fabmaster911,

Post some pics as soon as you get it mounted. Not sure when my DLE 30 will be coming in.

I agree with the figures you gave on the FG-20. I actually already have one and I am getting about 8400 RPM on a 16 x 6 APC prop.

What I was wondering was, what RPM would you get from the Zenoah 20 on a 16 x 6. Just trying to get a comparison to see if the FG-20 would be suitable.

Zippi I am having to add 5/8 additional to my standoffs. I have some large aluminum washers so It will only be an ounce or two. Are you getting the single bolt conversion on your engine? The numbers on these engines are looking awesome. I am getting a bit worried about the firewall. I would like to pin it but the side structure doesn't offer much to work with. I should have it flying this weekend so I'll post some pics and numbers.

fabmaster911,

I am getting a single bolt prop hub. Ralph made a new prop hub for me and the total length will be 5 11/16". If I calulated correctly that should put the spinner back plate about 1/16" away from the cowl. Looks like you'll be the first one in the air. If you have the engine mouted post some pic's.

Fabmaster, I see you are worried about the firewall. I am too the rest of the plane is very beefy and solid. The firewall looks thin to me and the joints to the fuselage arent that much reinforced the way I would. I would like to add a thicker plate on the front of the firewall, and figure out a way to put some more reinforcement inside, but its hard to reach up in there, not easy to do at this point.

I weighted my OS120AX 2 stroke, with the included aluminum motor mounts and the muffler. 2.25pounds. Then I put the Zenoan 26 on the scale, with muffler, ignition box and battery for ignition. Just a sliver over 4 pounds. So I am adding 1 3/4 pounds vs. the 2 stroke I would use. I'm afraid of a moderately hard landing or something and the firewall break right off with that Zenoah motor or come apart slowly over time.

The Zenoah 26 will fit inside the cowl I checked that out the muffler and carb on either side fit I will not have to cut the cowl at all. Just worried about the weight. I guess a lot of guys flew the old ones with the G23 engine magneto which was even heavier than the e.i. engines we have now. comments appreciated.

Just found out this morning that Ralph C. at RC Ignitions is shipping the custom built DLE 30cc engines out next week. Hopefully I'll have it by next weekend so I can finish this project up and get her in the air. I'm pretty sure the whole muffler will fit inside the cowl but just in case I have an extra exhaust header for a G26 that will fit. The bolt pattern is the same.

Fabmaster,

About the firewall issue. I guess a fellow could lay the fuse on it's side and mix up a lot of epoxy and start putting it in the center hole in the firewall and let it run down the inside of the firewall untill it got to the edge and that might help. Then repeat this on the other side. The only thing I did extra was mix up some epoxy and smear some on my finger and reach through the center hole on the firewall and spread it on the stringer at the bottom that I could reach. I'm not really that concerned about the firewall as I am of making sure the engine is mounted very tight and the engine is tunned properly to cut down on as much vibration as possible. That's what causes the most damage. A Saito 180 shakes more than these small gassers do and there are a lot of them running on smaller planes that have 1/4" firewalls as well.

That's most interesting. 6 times the current other ignitions need !! [:@]

You can get a new ignition from C&H that will draw less than a 1/4 of the power the Zenoah uses.

Okay, heres a couple pics. I had to get a bit creative on the throttle linkage. Thats 3/16 aluminum tube tapped for 4-40 bolts. The bolts butt up against each other inside and everything is Red Loctited together.

fabmaster911,

Nice job on mounting the engine. I'm jealous of that prop you have. I use the XOAR white props (The Sword) and only the name is in red. What brand of prop are you using??? I was afraid the bottom of the cowl would have to be cut out and ruin that nice air scoop. Nice looking setup, can't wait to get mine. Is there enough room to reach in and use the choke manually? I was checking my throws today and I can only get 1 3/8" on the ailerons instead of the 1 1/2" like the manual says. If it doesn't have enough throw for the aerobaics that I'm looking for I'm may have to cut the hinges off and install robart hinges. I had to do this with my Rascal 110. Just didnt have enough of a row rate.

Apparently zenoah did that because of the lipo battery advances that have been made. When you flip the engine over the plug will arc out to 40mm for easy hand starting and reliable running.

The prop is a Biela Carbon. I wish it was a 18X8 rather than an 18X6. If nothing else I have a Xoar 18X8 and a Mejzlik 18X10. I just don't want to drill all my props and not like the way they run. I'll get one of the single bolt conversions from Ralph but I didn't want to wait any longer than necessary for the engine. Gonna try to fly Sunday

Going to have to go with smoke. I'm going to tint the bottom windows and put a piece of 1/8 ply over the top of the tanks. I just couldn't bring myself to put the gay pilot in there. I am at 11 pounds 1 oz. without the wings, cowl and prop.
