Giant Sweet and low stik
 

Any interest in a Giant Sweet and low stik build thread? I just started putting one together. Power will be a Q-35 or a US engines 41cc. Nothing fancy, covering in monocote, just slapping together an everday sport flier.

Okay, I guess I'm a short bus kind of guy when it comes to some of this computer stuff. How do I post pictures ? I framed up the wings tonight and took a few pics. I am clueless as to get them into the post. Anybody please feel free to educate me, but use short easy to understand words.

When you post use the Post Reply at the bottom left where it shows POST REPLY ALL Forums>> RC Airplanes

Then while you are posting there is a tab at the bottom for uploading images. Select one image at a time once it is loaded you can select another.

I think I got the pics loaded here. !st one is just the wing layout. 2nd is the spars. I cut them on the table saw out of aircraft grade Douglas fir. Some leftover material from a full size project. 3rd is the laying out of the ribs over tha plan. I had purchased a short kit from Lazer works. I ended up with some extra ribs, missing a couple of little things, so I am kind of making this up as I go along. The quality of the cutting and wood is nice.

OK, 1st Pic is just adding the other spar. the 2nd pic adding a thin trailing edge. I will be adding 1/4" square in between each rib to strengthen it and give a little meat for the hinges. The last pic is adding a little trailing edge sheeting. I know myself well enough to know that if I did not do this I would be snapping parts off left and right every time I moved something. I repeated the process for the other side so now left and right are at the same stage.

Here are my engine choices. The one on the right is a Quadra 35. The one on the left is a U.S. Engines 41. The plans call for the Quadra, I'm not a 3D guy. So...I am leaning towards the Q35. Any feedback on that would be appreciated. Any thoughts on fuel consumption on one of those ? I usually opt for as large a tank as I can fit in the model. I live on a farm and just take off in the back yard, I always fly alone, so I'm not "hogging" the sky. I like 25-30 minuteflights if I can.There are a couple of clubs around here, but I quickly tire of the cliques and politics....

I see you figured out the pic post,

What is the span on your Stick? I have a AMR 30cc High Wing Stick, it has a 84" span and fly's great on a DLE-30.

Hey Anthony, thanks for the tutorial on the pictures. The Midwest plans are 88" or 89", I can't remember exactly. I am leaning toward the Q35...Save theUS 41 for a larger project..
     The snowmobile trails are opening here this morning, so I am on my way out to burn some gas !! I will get some more work done on the stik later tonight I am guessing .

Well i have been flying a Giant Sweet & Low for about 11 years now... I started out with a Q-35 and then a US-41.....I think the 41 is a better choice....

I finished my Giant Sweet-n-Low Stick about 7 years ago. It was built from Midwest plans. Back in the 80's this was one of the largest aircraft seen anywhere. Today it looks just about average size. I took some liberties with the plans and changed the tail section to look more conventional and added flaps so I could program in the CROW effect. I also increased the size of the ailerons and flaps. I moved the wing servos out in the wing, the plans had torque rods, and I put the other servos in the tail like most modern aircraft to help with balance of a heavy engine. The landing gear is a hand-me-down from a 50cc size Edge and the wheels are a little big, but I think it looks pretty good.

At first i installed my old Saito 270 twin that I purchased back around 1985. With this engine it weighed in at a hefty 18 pounds dry but with around 1800 sq. in. of wing area, it flew really good but i ended up putting a G62 on it as i wanted more power and cheaper fuel. Flying with the CROW for speed brakes is a hoot. I can go real high above the end of the runway, cut to idle and deploy CROW, it comes straight down but does not pick up speed. About 30 feet above the ground I can level out and land with hardly any rollout. It is visually exciting.

Any way, I will follow the thread to see how yours turns out and what it weighs. Here is a pic with the twin installed.

I too am looking forward to your build. I am just starting to step up from the 40 size planes and started with a 4*120 kit. I would like to try and scratch build a stick. Where did you get the plans? I'll probably go with a DLE 30. Or crazy with a Moki 210 converted to gas. I have a ton of balsa and think I can build pretty easy and I don't want an ARF.

It is always a good idea to have a plan when you start your evenings work. I usually get more done. Tonight though....the plan was a bad one. I always start builds with wings because I hate building wings. The plans do not show very well how to attach the two panels together. There is mention of a spar brace, but the short kit did not come with one, and the ribs were not cut out to to make room for one. I came up with my own idea and plan. I started to work it out and I got about half way and had to clamp a bunch of stuff together and will be waiting untill tomorrow to finish attaching the wing halves. It will all work out, but...I do not think it will be pretty. Photos to follow tomorrow.
GlowFlite...I got the plans on Ebay, just type in Giant Sweet and Low stik,... twenty bucks. </p>

I believe I just butt glued (epoxy) the two wings together at the prpoer angle and then used fiberglass wrap to make the joint strong. I think that was the way the instructions stated. I can see fiberglass under my covering....

This is what I ended up doing. Doubling the spar front and back in the center section. Most likely overkill, but I do like to pull more than a few G's. I also threw in a little dihedral, I wasn't sure...but I figured why not...After that sets up, I will sheet the leading and trailing edges, also put some solid balsa in the center where the wing hold down bolts will go.....more tomorrow...going a bit slow...home with the flu...

Keep up the great work. I am enjoying the build, and hope yopu feel better soon. However you many be on to something, the flu will feep you out of work. Gives you a lot more time to build. My great buddy rans6 came to visit me tonight and brought me a present. It needs a little cleaning up but i think it will be a great flyer.

I got a little bit done tonight.. 1st picture shows how the wing halves were joined. not real pretty, but very strong. 2nd picture just shows continuation of adding some meat to the trailing edge for hinges, hard to see in the photo, I have added some 1/8" lite ply under the trailing edge sheeting to help with the wing bolt re-enforcement. The last is a shot along the spar on the bottom of the wing. It turned out nice and straight, but... my little bit of dihedral seems like alot now that the wing is one piece.
Next I need to figure out where to put the aileron servos. Question,hinges...robart hinge points or CA hinges. I have never used the CA type on a model this large. Any thoughts ?

I got a little bit done today. Sheeted the trailing edge, put some plywood in where the wing bolts will go. I also put on the first layer of the leading edge, and started to attach the leading edge sheeting. I hope to have the wing done in a couple days. I want to knock this one out relativelyquick. I just got some Meister Spitfire plans in the mail. 96" span, looks pretty coolThat is next on the list. I have a Saito 150 for it. More tomorrow...

More work on the wing. Shear webs along the entire then, sheeting the top of the leading edge. Also the center section on the top as well. Iput asome filler in some of the seams...getting ready for a little sanding. I plan on trying to finish up most of it tomorrow, and get the center section glassed. Then...tail section ...or fuselage ?

I had such big plans for today...but as usual, life got in the way. I got the leading edge sheeting started on the bottom of the wing. Let that glue dry over night and hit it tomorrow...

I just got the bottom side leading edge sheeting attached. Need to let that dry for a bit. Then I can finish up most of the wing. No one has offered an opinion on hinges, I am still not sure about CA type hinges on a model this large, does anyone have any experience with that ?
