Edge 540 27.4% Build

4 Attachment(s)
Well it's time for another build, and this time I am looking to challenge myself to build a very different type of plane for me...a 27.4% Edge 540 by D&L Designs. It's different for me as my other builds have all been Sig kits: 1/5 scale Ryan STA and my most recent build a 1/4 scale Spacewalker. As I said, these were all kits and this project will be conceived from plans. I decided to have all the ribs, formers, etc. laser cut and I am still waiting for them to be delivered. I did start to receive some of the wood in the mail today that I need to get this project started. If you note the name on the box, it makes me smile to know that even this plane has a Sig connection. One may take for granted all of the materials and supplies that are supplied for you in a kit, all these items now have to be located and purchased separately in order to get started. But that's all the more fun right?

I have chosen to power this project with a DA50R engine which should be more than adequate for the job...I also plan on using carbon fiber to strengthen areas that will be stressed. Cowl and wheel pants have been purchased from Fiberglass Specialties that I should expect delivery any day now. Since I am still waiting for some key pieces to this puzzle the glue bottle won't be cracked open until everything shows up.

I can tell you that for the past several weeks I have been pouring over the plans making notes to myself the changes I want to make and how this will all go together. My dining room table has been perfect for the job, as I live alone and there's nobody here that says that I can't! The building of course will take place in my humble workshop...I am blessed that I have some very close friends here that live and breath 3-D planes and I will seek their advice (and yours) when needed. So I hope that this project generates some interest and I hope you come along for the ride I think it will be fun...

Vincent, I will be following and looking forward to learning some new techniques.

I'm here too for the ride. Looking forward to watching this one from the beginning, Steve.

Sub'ed! Who did the laser cutting? A vendor that might be of interest is Graph Tech: http://www.graphtechrcshop.com

Okay VJ, I'm here. You can start now. ;)

VincentJ 09-23-2013 02:26 PM

Gee guys, welcome aboard! Kevin, I'm still laughing at your humor!

Gary, Sig did the laser cutting for my parts and I should have them in hand shortly. BTW, the wood that they (Sig) sent me was incredible, I'm drooling to get started, oh wait that's just the reaction to the paint fumes from my last build...

What took you so long David, welcome back!

Sorry there VJ, I've been busy at work. What can I say? Please accept my humble apologies. I feel so bad now, I'll try to do better in the future. I really will.

Okay, enough of this dribble! Let's get on with it!!! :D

I, as well, am subscribed. And patiently await the start. But there is one question that comes to mind. Should one set a limit of the number of planes to be built before flying the first non-flown finished build??????

LOL

Cub Flyer Fresno 09-23-2013 04:26 PM

Here-here Robert!!!

Hey, what took you so long to join the crowd???

raptureboy 09-23-2013 04:28 PM

Hey! What am I chopped liver? I got you covered man. I didn't know Sig did lazer work on the side. If I may what did they charge for a kit this size?

TCampbell 09-23-2013 05:49 PM

Looking forward to another great thread, I'm in!

Leroy Gardner 09-23-2013 06:00 PM

Shucks, I thought this was going to be a scratch build where you cut all the pieces on a scroll saw, ha ha. This would be a very long thread and interesting too.

I had better be nice, I may have more questions about Vincent's last build.

Welcome back Anthony, Robert , Cliff and Tim!

Robert at least I flew my SW...doesn't that count? LOL

Cliff, I purchased the laser cut parts from Doug who is the owner of D&L Designs, he had Sig cut them for him, the cost was $116.00 plus shipping costs. You can purchase the plans and the laser cut wood parts together or separetly.

Leroy, if I had a scroll saw or band saw I would have cut them myself, I didn't want to torture myself doing all of the cutting with a coping saw!

ghoffman 09-24-2013 03:58 AM

The CNC laser cut parts will be more accurate no matter how much effort you would do with a coping saw.

Agreed...

Congratulations on the SW Vincent. Some how, with all the work, I totally missed seeing those post. Now, back to work.

Hey Vincent,

I'm here too (speaking of late comers).

Don't let your 3D buddies try to convince you that the DA-50 is not enough motor for the plane. Just watch your weight (on the plane) and you'll be fine.

Take care,
David

PS Did anybody else lose all of their Icons?

Cub Flyer Fresno 09-24-2013 01:08 PM

Loose their icons? To which icons are you referring?

David, I'm glad to see you back! I don't have the icons anymore as well, they went MIA a few days ago... David, (the other David) we are talking about the emoticons.

David, my friends here that fly 3-D actually have not suggested that the DA50 will be underpowered in this plane , they have all expressed the opinion that it will have more than enough power to fly with authority... My plan is to try to target this plane at 15-16 pounds.

ghoffman 09-25-2013 05:10 AM

This is an 80 inch Edge, the DA-50 will be awesome on this! A DA-50 would be a dog on a 92 inch Edge for sure.

raptureboy 09-25-2013 05:19 AM

Hmmm. Dear Santa, I have been a very good boy this year and I would like very much if I could have a new band saw for Christmas so I can build really nice airpalnes for all my friends here on RCU.:)(
