Robart Air Retracts, want better pump
 

I have the old hand pump #164G with a #168 fill valve and chuck. It is slower than I would like. The #168 fill valve and chuck does not work with a bicycle pump. It looks like Robart has some new chucks that might work with a bicycle pump and I see they have an electric pump. Recommendations anyone? Thanks.

I use a pump from the auto dept of Walmart that runs off 12 volts. I use my starter battery. They will go up to at least 120 psig and have a pressure gauge built in. Less than $20. Harbor Freight has a similar pump that goes on sale for $6.99. I have one, but have not put it in service yet.

I bought one of these for road side emergencies about 12-14 years ago and it's held up great, I use it to inflate the suspension airbags on my truck too, along with many other things,,, not as cheap but the kit has come in handy over the years,, only thing I don't like about it is it doesn't have a switch, but that is easy to add

This is the fill valve and chuck that I have. My bicycle pumps do not pump air through this fill valve. The ends on my bicycle pumps are the same as the end on Walmart pump. It this the fill valve that you are using? If so, I wonder why my bicycle pumps don't work.

It sounds like you are trying to fit the valve directly into your pump, but it does not fit/work that way.

The Valve and Filler are meant to fit together and each have an air line. One air line goes into the plane air system from the aluminum filler part, the other "brass" fill valve has an air line that goes to your pump.

You need to make some adapter to get from the pump into the air line - I just used a sports/ball fill needle and cut the end off of it. The needle is the right size to hold an air line without needing the barbs. The threaded end of the sports needle goes into your pump.

No pictures here, so I hope that makes sense.

Years ago when I got my first set of air retracts, I had problems with about half of the air supply escaping when I disconnected the fill fitting. I switched to a battery powered tire inflator with a quick disconnect valve and never looked back. Quick, easy and no air loss plus I can carry the inflator in my truck for emergencies.
