RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon

Hi Guys,

Just signed up to the forum after seeing this thread. I'm about half way ready the whole thread but have a couple of questions that i haven't found the answer for yet.
I'm looking to buy the 30% scale kit from National Balsa. Where is a good place to get the Cowling/WheelPants/Canopy? And are these good fit for the 30%?

The main reason to go for the 30% versus 33% is that i can run it with a DLE-55 which keeps the cost down. Seems like for a 33% you need to run a DLE-111.

Regards,
Martin

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon

If you go to the Hostettler web site he lists sources for all of these parts, except the canopy. Fibertech N More (The old Stans Fiberglass I believe) was orignally where I purchased my 30% cowl. It fitted well w/ my Hostettler plans (scratch built and several threads in this forum). Could also check Fiberglass Specialties.

Regards, Tom

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon

well, you don't need a 111. if you check on you tube, theres a nice flight on one with a zdz 80.

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon

The ZDZ 80 has the power of most 100's it should fly it just fine.

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon

i have a zdz super 80 that i would like to use, but at 9 1/2 " long it would be a pita to make it fit.major firewall mods to start.

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon

Hi guys,

Thanks for some feedback. Hostetler says the weight for a 33% is 25-30lbs. If my memory is correct a DLE-55 produces around 30lbs thrust right? So should that not be adequate enough?

Martin

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon

Martin: The 55 would be OK for the 30% but I agree that it would be pushing it for the 33%. You are not going to have unlimited verticle in either case.

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon

it,s not the weight only, it's a big airfame with lots of drag.i would think a 55 with a smaller prop would barely get it in the air

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon

BobT which one are you building? if the 30%, a 55 would do fine, all my 30% SDs fly well with the 50-55cc.
If it is the 33%, I´d go for a 80 or 100cc. My 35% are a little larger than the WH 33% and were designed for the DLE-111 twin. Ken´s 33% flys with a ZDZ 80

Hi Bobt; I would suggust the DLE111 if you plan to use fabric covering- automobile paint- scale cockpit- scale screw ribstitching- landing lights etc. ( this will make the plane weigh about 37 lbs) the DLE111 will be plenty of power. the plane will not notice the extra weight if you are inclined to build in the extras. The DLE55 should be fine if built lighter but as others have said the best compromise might be the 80 size engines. I like to add scale items and am very happy with the DLE111 and my 37 lb. Decathelon cheers John

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon

I wish there was a DLE in between the DLE-60 and DLE-111. Like the Zenoah GT-80 but the gt-80 only produces about 5.5hp which is the same as the DLE-55.
How does the DLE-111 fit in the 33% Hostetler?

well, i,m lucky in that i fly imac style aircraft. i own several da's and have a 100 that would be perfect. not to be a snob, but no china engine for this old man

Kellermann 12-16-2012 09:36 AM

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon

Well, nothing against the DLE engines but if you have a DA-100 that would be the perfect one for your SD. Carefully check if the spark plugs + caps will fit inside the cowl.

probally not, as well as the mufflers hanging out the bottom. or i could add canisters thru the fuse.

Guess BOBT answered that.

I designed my 35% scale exactly for the specs of the DLE-111. The 2 exhaust stacks length can be trimmed to be flush with the cowl underline, as the exhaust tunnel rear of it is functional, that is, you cannot see the stacks in level (flight) mode however they protrude enough no to mess with the underside of the plane.

Did that with the PItts-Style Muffler on my 30% powered by a Fuji 50, too.

Thanks John.. Yours looks real nice! I like to color scheme.

Hi Marcus,
Is your kit comparable to Hostetlers 33% price wise? (national balsa $425,- full kit)

Martin, mine is more expensive. USD 1250 + 15% S&H. Check my website [link=http://www.marcusmodelfactory.com/Pre-os-e-Condies.html]Details[/link], to see why my SD is different from others... If your browser is Google Chrome, be sure to have your automatic translator turned on.

Hello Marcus, How did you do the exhaust on the 35% or the DLE111? Do you have any photo's that you would share? Joe

ok, turns out the da 100 is actually smaller. fits in the cowl with a little room to spare, however i,m sure the front of the mufflers will poke out the front bottom.
