Hi Guys,

size 32X18, handmade from Phil in Kansas!

Now I made the first tank covering in the wing. For this I had to cut out the covering of the wings
and glue in two stripes of balsa on the both outer ribs, to get an area to glue on the tank plates.
It´s now painted with white Primer, looks better than the dark grey filler.
But all is now very very filigrane, and I must have a lot of care at transporting the Plane.

Today I worked on with the rib-stitching, I made them with thin white glue ropes
and pinking tape of Tony Clark. The upper wing is now ready to paint work.
This week came also the decals, a friend of the german warbirdforum made it for me,
see self:

Bernie,

Very good. I think you got it correct on the ailerons with the tip detail and hinging, the fuel tanks and the rib stitch looks very good as well. I only see 3 “G-WOCO” decals (2 for the fuselage, 1 for the wing), is there another for the wing? It is going to be very nice and impressive when you are done. Can’t wait to see it finished.

Hi John,

the "G-WOCO" has only on the left downside a registration, I don´t know why, in "good old England" it had a must be :D
but be that as it may, it is so and I have to accept it.

You don´t believe it, what a work it is, to make the rib stitching by this way, first draw a line alonge the ribs,
than measure the distance between the stitches, than bring on the white glue on the wing with an injection needle,
on every rib ca. 35 pieces in the right strength and lenght.
If I did know this before, I would take ready rib stitching tape.

Bernie,

Thanks for the registration answer, I know different countries have different marking regulations. Here in the US, many restored aircraft have the registration number (small size) under the horizontal stab and not on the fuselage or wings in the normal large size.

Yes, I do know about rib stiching and how much work it can be. I will be doing it on the Super Cub I have ready to build (the Waco is next). You have done a very good job with your method.

Bernie..... I don't think anybody is going to say anything about a couple of "runs" in the paint unless you are in some kind of contest.
I just sent off to F&M Enterprizes for the paint and fabric for my Stearman........... It is raining here today so I'm going to work on the plane a little.

Hi Ho Germany!!

Again a little update,

the fuselage is ready now with all decals, as you can see, the registration is british, large on the fuse side.
Still to do is , to brin on the snap buttons around the front cockpit, to attach the covering of it.

Regards
Bernie

Bernie,

It is looking very good. The rib stitch detail is there but is not noticable until you look for it, very nice. You do have to paint the engine baffles black though:D. (another thing to add to the "TO DO" List[:@].

Bernie................Nice work. Care to show some pictures if you have any, as to how you've done the rib stitching ?. Apparently there is some kind of a tape, not quite sure how it is done though.

Garthwood,

There are a number of ways to do the rib stitching; glue lines placed individually, thread placed individually, thread on a carrier etc., all covered with “pinked” tape. Check out these sites for more info:

The Cub Den http://www.thecubden.org/ has a How –To on rib stitching. I would use it as a guide and use some of the materials below.

Get Stencils http://www.getstencils.com/ has pinked tape cut from covering material in scales from 1/6th up

Nelson Hobby http://www.nelsonhobby.com/ will be carrying rib stitch supplies soon.

Scale Rib Stitch http://home.cablerocket.com/~scaleribstitch/ has rib stitching pre-mounted on a carrier in various scales.

RE: Buiding pics Waco YMF-5 Barth Modellbau

Hi Charles,

I didn´t made pic´s at bringing on the rib-stitching. I try, to explane: the stiches are made of white-glue, small ropes 3-5mm long in the right distance.
The first ones were too big, start on a place, which is not so visible. With a little training the results got better and better. In case of my Waco in 1/3 scale
it were ca. 4000 pieces
It works best with an injection needle 1mm dia. I did sand the top of the needle flat.
After this there came over the "glue-stitches" a pinking tape, you can order it here: http://www.toni-clark.com/index_en.htm , page 118 in several sizes.
At first i was a bit frusted, because the self adhesive pinking tape dit lift of after one our around the white glue. The tric was, after bringing on the tape
make it worm with a covering iron, 70-80° C, and then rubbing with a towell over the tape, and all was good.

Thank you Bernie..............I'll check out the link you recommended. I checked a couple of the links that John recommended. There's a lot of stuff. So what you are saying is, first you apply the glue with a syringe, and after the glue had dried you apply the tape over the rivets (glue). Is that right ?

That´s allright, don´t forget, to sand the syringe flat, otherwise you get holes in your covering :D
And let the glue dry over night, not only a few hours!
