Greg, check out the earlier post on page 8, post #184 and read on......Brian at [email protected] has some nice lasercut shortkits of all the BN kits, good guy and good $ price too........die smashing was really bad in the kit I bought so I bought Brian's shortkit, lasercut precision, high quality andtime saving on the build, well worth the purchase.....

sebo,
Just finished reading your entire BN Champ build, http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_73...tm.htm#7346460and was wandering if you added the extra wing ribs on the wingtips rather than the balsa blocks on your BN Citabria like you did to the BNChamp? I'm wanting to go with theextra rib idea instead of the balsa block for the wingtips also. Lots of good info on that BN Champ buildthat applies to the BN Citabria as well, basically same plane, thanks for all the info/pics..........Mike

Thanks for the compliments.........I used the blocks on the citabria...........You can hollow them out to reduce the weight, or go to the hobby shop and get some really light balsa blocks.
I buy balsa blocks when the ones that are supplied with the kit are too heavy for my satisfaction......
I hollow out really light balsa blocks and harden the outside with thin CA to prevent possible scuffing should I ding a wing tip on landing or take off........this really works .... I haven't dinged a wing tip since I started hardening them......Must be a mental thing.

Enjoy the build........I've been flying a lot and had 3 planes in need of minor repair. ... Landing gear on 2 of them....did that this week...
I have a Nosen 40 size Citabria that I need to get into the air.......been sitting around for over 4 years. I have too many planes but I just keep on building them.
I like to build..........

sebo,
not worried about the weight of the balsa blocks as much as the AOA on the wingtips, looks like the wingtips could be done up better using another rib to replicate the full scale wingtips, considering copyingthe washout on my Midwest Citabria
wingtips on the BN Citabria, the center wing stalls out before the wingtips, notip stalls low and slow......

RE: BUD NOSEN 1/4 scale CITABRIA BUILD COMPLETION

if anyoneisbuilding the BN Citabria be sure to check the measurements on the drawing of the horizontal stab, mine are the original A&A BNfactory prints and the left side stab was 3/8's of an inch shorter on the left side than the right. noticed this while building the elevators, flipped the right elevator over to build a mirror image of the left and found it to be off on the left side by 3/8's, anyone else notice this?

1/16 Balsa sheeting on the vertical and horizontal stabs, no more twisting or flexing going on here, just need to put the bevel on the hinge line, round off the edges and cut the slots for the Radio South Pro CA hinges from Tony Stillman....

Might this create a "tail heavy" situation.....Ply isn't as light as covering....and then you have to cover it.....
Let us know when you balance it.......Sebo

sebo,
Used 1/16 medium balsa not "ply" and my scales came out with about 20+ grams of the 1/16 balsa sheeting before gluing to the tailfeathers, hardly even noticeable but sure added some strength/rigidity where it was needed, along with some piece of mind. Also have my servos located in the cabin area right on the CG and using Dave Brown pushrods, if the servos were mounted in the rear in front of the sheeted tailfeathers this would definetly cause a tail heavy condition which needs to be avoided. Heard in some other forums and from one subscriber in here that they have seen the horizontal stab fold in half like a V-tail Bonaza in a shallow dive pulling back hard on the stick. I have a tremendous amount of time and $ in this build and not taking chances, gonna do it right while I have it on the table. A fellow club member has a BN Champ with a US 41 cc, his tailfeathers are a blur while the motor is running and I'm not trusting the covering to add any strength. I'm using carbon fiber rods for the flying wire supports in the rear. My Midwest Citabria tailfeathers are sheeted as well and balance was not an issue, been flying it for nearly 15 years. Thanks for your concern and appreciate your post and will let you know how the balance comes out, should'nt be a problem....Mike

My stabs are doing fine being open ribbed like the full scale design although I have a very nice and sturdy/functional tailbrace wire setup. I believe the v-tail Bonaza episode was due to the braces being anchored in balsa instead of hardwood gussets (triangles) and the fact that it was overpowered and heavy certainly didn't help the situation..

Hi Bass1,
Got myred/white 21st Century covering in last week, finishing the Citabria off exactlylike your beautiful bird. If you look closely atthe sheeting picsthe tiny holes in the balsa sheeted tailfeathershave hardwood anchor points underneath the sheeting, put triangle gussets in between the ribs. Citabria is going to be overpowered with the DLE 35cc in the nose, good reasonto be beefing up certain areas.Planon leisurely, relaxedstyle of flying with the Citabria, scale-like. Got a GP Ultimate Bipe/DLE 55cc hot rod to burn holes in the sky.......when I feel that way....

Ok on the wing tubes, what did y'all use for the center and in the wings? I used the aluminum in the center and wood 3/8 dowels in the wings, two flights and several assembly's and two of the woods are cracked.

center wing section mods include adding ribs to the rear section under the 3/32 sheeting, doubled up all W1ply ribs, extra ply in the front section between spruce spars and1/4' triangle stock everywhere, remaing balsa sheeting on the top is done only after the wing panels are drilled and joined to the wingcenter section, still very light but very rigid and strong......

table is 8ft. long and the fuse use's most of it, begining to take on them nice Citabria lines, a bit more sheeting on the top and bottom and a final sanding before covering....
