The advanced trainer of choice for America and her allies during WWII, the T-6 Texan gave hundreds of thousands of pilots their first glimpse of aerial combat maneuvers before they were plunged into actual combat over Europe and the Pacific. A living legend, the Texan still flies today as an air show performer, in air races, and as the prized possession of a lucky few private owners who fly for thrills.

Hangar 9’s one-of-a-kind AT-6 ARF is a skillfully crafted rendition of a full-scale Texan owned by Fred Johnson of Ocala, FL named Miss Appropriation of Funds. It is available at Hobby Warehouse for $255.

My first e-conversion with retracts! It will use a MaxCim 13Y motor with the new MEC Superbox on 26 cells of CP1700 NiCd.

Keep us posted on the conversion, that may make this texan interesting.

My MaxCim 13Y motor arrived for my new Hangar9 AT-6 Texan conversion and easily mounted using the 0.8oz motor mount.

The new style MEC Superbox was already mounted with the correct spur and pinion gears as ordered. This was a nice touch by MaxCim.

The Superbox now supports ratios from 1.48:1 to 5:00:1

I'm actually pretty far along with the conversion. The wing went together well and I mounted my first retract servo.

Well, now I know mine's going to get a glow engine for sure...

Matt,

You're gonna slime it all up! ;)

I've been side-tracked a bit on other projects but I finished my wing strakes and added a small bit of balsa to keep the ends flush.

Before mounting the cowl, I drilled some air holes for cooling the controller.

Note the Harry Higley's Safety Spinner Hub (1/4-28) I bought from Tower Hobbies.

I thought about converting my P-51 to electric but after seeing the investment into the motor, controller and batteries I just settled to get mine slimed up. Too much for me now. If it survives and I have the funds, it may be electric one day.
I just read in one of the magazines an e conversion of a P-51 using Hacker B50 and Opto 77-3P controller, I think. Lots of power, he was able to take off on half throttle.
Keep us posted on your conversion. I'd like to know what kind of flight times you get.

Yes, the larger e-conversions have a price premium...at least up front. I am convinced thay my clean e-models last longer than my glow friends planes.

We test flew the AT-6 last weekend. Boy, does it fly sweet!

After modifying the retracts a bit, we captured some great 35mm photos and videos. I'll post some photos when the film is developed and the video will be available when RCU publishes my review.

Awesome power level with the MaxCim motor and 15x10 prop. My flight times are rather short using the CP1700 cells...about 5-7 minutes. I must be getting used to Lithium power. ;)

Looks great Greg. Is there enough room to mount the controller in front of the firewall? I did this on my MagicE and it stays nice and cool now.

Hey Gregg, aren't you posting in Ezone anymore? I don't see any posts beyond July 7.

Hi Kelvin,

Nope, an occasional review but no more posting.

Regards.

D.W.,

Yes, you have a great deal of room to work with. It is quite a change from my Winter-based micro-flight projects. :)

I don't think that's all that bad for the 1700's given the size of the plane and a large bl setup. I don't think the added weight of the 2400 or 3000 cells will detract from it's performance although a TP pack would be the optimal choice. That last one reminded me why I'm goinc IC for now.

Here is shot of my finished AT-6 Texan. I still need to measure the weight all up but she flew great!

The plane flew like it was on rails. It had awesome power with my MaxCim motor.

Where did you get the motor from?

Hi Darrick,

From MaxCim Motors.

It is a 13Y motor with a MEC Superbox geared 3.75:1

It comes all setup and ready to install. :)

Greg, I just quickly scanned the messages and didn't see which prop you are using. I'm thinking seriously of setting up and identical aircrart (but with LiPo power).

LiPo power...very cool! :)

Here is my AT-6 setup in full:
  • MaxCim (MaxN32-13Y) brushless motor
  • MEC Superbox 3.75:1 w/16T pinion (MaxGR3.75-1/4)
  • MaxCim 25-cell Controller w/ 3amp BEC (Maxu35-25BEC)
  • 26-cells CP1700SCR NiCd
  • APC 15x10 e-prop

For a Lithium pack, a dual 4s configuration works great on MaxCim power systems. My ShowFlyer has one. You will also have plenty of power using a 4s and 3s pack combination.

My 26-cell setup was taken, as is, from another application but a 24-cell setup would work great also.

Good luck!

If only my pilot was installed...this shot looks almost real!

Note the one retract hanging, not quite in the locked position.

Congratulations, Greg!

Great pics! What amps and rpm is in your set-up?
