Electric power system for my Cub
 

I have a Great Planes ARF j-3 Cub. It has an 81" wingspan, and weighs about 9 pounds with a 60-sized slimer up front. I'd like to replace the engine for an electric motor system, but not sure what I need. I'd like to be able to fly off grass with wheels and water on floats. The airplane can swing a 15-16" prop with the current gear and wheels. I'd like to be able to use 2 3S LiPo batteries for power, as I have several for other airplanes. What would make a reliable power setup that can get this wonderful Cub back in the air?

Need more info: how many squares is the wing?
Hacker and Scorpion have motors to replace a .60 glo...Hacker A50-12S motor and 6S pack is rated to 1800watts with a 17X10 prop.
Check out Alle Rc @ http://www.allerc.com/ they have some nice Hyperion motors there on sale. Should be able to find what you need.

Many people choose to purchase cheap motors and speed controls from Hobby King, as for me I would never use cheap motors/ESC's on expensive planes.
The choice is yours however and you get what you pay for.

The chord is 12", so wing area is about 960 to 1000 square inches. I agree the cheapest price isn't always the best choice. I'm looking to be able to fly off water, so something about 1500 to 2000 watts is likely needed. I'd like to use two 3s lipos for 6s (22 volts) so 90 amps may be required, and that is too high for me to be satisfied with. May have to step up to 8s batteries are needed? I'd hate to spend the money and noot be able to fly it the way I want to.

I bought a 650KV Cobra 3525/12 outrunner and 60Amp Cobra speed control with switch mode BEC for my 59" w/s Maxford Gee Bee E model on recommendation of Lucien Miller, Innov8tive Designs. It will swing a 15x8 APC prop on 4S 4500mah lipos.( Lipos are $49 from Hobby People) This motor and speed control combo is relatively inexpensive and should pull your Cub with authority, check with Lucien to make sure before ordering)

Here is a setup I use in my glider towing plane. It weighs in at 12 pounds with a big 2 meter glider hooked on top

I run a 16X8 APC E prop. Yanks the thing off the ground. I get 20 minute flights with good throttle management.
