Help electric motor size for 46 size trainer
 

Can someone help determine electric motor and esc size for a balsa 46 size high wing trainer that weighs 5 - 6 lbs. Thanks batdog

I converted my Sig LT40 from glow to electric this year. I have an Eflite Power 46 electric motor and a Castle Creations 75 amp ESC. The ESC is overkill as a 60 amp would do fine. I was amazed to fly this plane on electric power. It's about as perfect as I could hope for. This combo has more power than I need, but I also use the plane for float flying. Hope that helps.

You need to determine the weight of the plane WITHOUT the engine in it. Then determine the weight of the motor you plan to use (how many oz) AND the weight of the battery. Add this to the weight of the plane. Now you have a weight you can work with.
Figure you will need 100 - 125 watts of power per pound of weight for a 40 size trainer. MANY motor suppliers provide a "wattage" based on a particular size/pitch prop and size of the lipo (3s, 4s, etc.) If in doubt look at the HK site. Almost all of the motors listed there provide a "wattage".

on a trainer that size its an easy choice any .46 size electric motor putting out around 800 watts or above would work well....

here is a good example = http://www.hobbypartz.com/96m605-big...020-670kv.html running this on a 4s 4000 mah or so battery and around a 13x6 prop would fly your trainer nicely with flight times around 10 minutes.....

best thing to do tho is if your going to get into electrics is get yourself a good watt meter so you can test out different set ups to see what works best.
