4*60 to Electric conversion Help....
 

Thinking of converting my 4*60 to electric.....

Tried searching the boards, but you really can't search for 4*60...Soooo if there is already an old thread and someone has a link that would be great.....

But.. I have been flying the 4*60 for a while with a few different 4 strokes.... so It was originally build for glow so it would not be as lightweight as it should...but I am a bit lost...

I fly foamies and other electrics so I am comfy with small electrics, but when it gets to bigger stuff I am lost!

Right now it is flying with a Saito 100 so I would want similar performance..
Not sure the weight, but It is probably about 8 lbs or so (but that is with the engine...)

Any ideas on a good motor, esc, battery combo for a 4*60 would be great....

I checked the Ampeer Plane ratings section. There were three Four Stars listed. My guess is that they were the "40" size based on the under six lbs weight. Two were on Astro 25Gs with 16 cells; one was using a MaxNeo on 20. Going by that I'd say an Astro 40G on 20 cells or a MaxNeo on 25 with 4/1 gearing would get you a nice flying bird.

Breaking that down into more universal terms look for a 24 to 30 volt motor that can pull 25 to 35 amps.

For an 8lb aerobatic plane, use 100w/lb or an 800 watt power system.

Your most cost effective choice that will perform very well is as follows:

Those are the things I was coming up with so I guess I am on the right track.....

re: battery... Wow.. $300 for batteries.... any other options that would be worthwhile.......?

Just trying to figure the cost to fun ratio.....

of course I could use the setup in a 5lb 3D plane later and be set!;):D



Oh...and I would prefer the outrunner, but are there any geared setups I should look at for comparison???

The other option is NiMH or NICd. Cheaper, but heavier, and painfully short duration.

I don't think you'll get the price-to-performance value out of a geared motor, either. They all end up being more expensive in the long run, for performance increases that really wouldn't be of much use on a 4*60.

Guess I'll save up for this one...

Hmm...$600 of electrics to put in a $100 kit....

I guess it is like my foamies.... a $5 chunk of foam being pulled around by $200 of electrics....
I guess by cost ratio the larger conversion is closer!;)[:@]:D

I maidened my Four Star 60 this am. AXI 4120-18, 14x7 APCe, Pheonix 60, 6s3p Irate 1800's. AUW about 8 lbs. The Irates are the old 10c cells. Draws 44 amps wot for 866 watts. Batteries were 98d on landing. Took off at about 3/4 throttle and flew around mostly 1/2 throttle. Certainly not unlimited vertical, but enough power for my flying style.
