Extreme Flight Yak 68" E-Conversion, Advice needed
 

Hey all,
I have decided that I want to go with electric power on the extreme flight yak 68"

Here is what I am considering doing:

Battery: 9s2p Thunderpower lipo setup (3x 3s2p 4000 mah Tp ProLite packs)

Motor: Hacker c50XL-13 plantary gear box 6.7:1

Servos: HS-6985HB x 5

Speed Controller: Castle Creations Phoenix 80

Radio: Futaba PCM 9 channel receiver & 9CAP radio.

Do you think this wil work well? I hope it has close to 2:1 power to weight or higher. The only thing I'm not 100% on is the speed controller because I haven't heard to much about the higher cc speed controllers

I would go with a Hacker regulator,,,

thinking this setup will give you good power, but you should prop it for maybe 50A max as you only have the 4000mAh packs... swinging a 22x12 prop.

13 or 14XL sounds about right.

I am also just finishing the same conversion
My setup is as follows

Hacker C50XL 6.7:1
TP 8s4p 8000 mAh (2 8s2p's parallel)
(5) Hitec 5945MG
Jeti Opto 77 amp controller
30 volt UBEC
21x14 APC Electric prop
Tru Turn 2 7/8 Ultimate lightned spinner
Airtronics Stylus PCM

Weight: 10.5 lbs
WOT Amp draw: 67 amps
WOT Power: 1937Watts
Above measured on a full battery with Astroflight Whattmeter


I went with the 4p pack because I was really concerned about having to add weight to the nose.
As it turns out I was actually able to move both packs back 1" to 1.5" from the back of the firewall and balance right behind the wing tube. I had talked to Michael who did the original conversion and write up and he used a 8s3p and had to add 6oz to the nose even after adding spacers to the motor to get it out an extra 1/2 inch. I did not space mine out and was still able to balance with the 4p pack. Hope this helps some

I've been flying the 68" ExtremeFlight Yak with a Hacker C50 12XL using a 20 x 13 APCE prop and TP10S3P 6000 Lite LiPos (two 5S3P packs in series). Performance is spectacular. I've yet to exceed 2/3 throttle and can climb vertically out of sight. I use around 4400 MA in a 9.5 minute flight flying AMA Masters maneuvers. The Hacker turns just about 6000 RPM at WOT. I use the Hacker Acro90 ESC and a combination of Futaba and Hitec digital servos.

I really want to keep this plane as light as possible,
perferably have my rtf wieght under 9-9.25 lbs.

I"m debating to go with either the polyquest batteries or Thunder power

Seems like it may be too nose heavy, so the polyquest woudld be a little heavier but cheaper at the same time as well.

Merlin, what hacker motor are you using? C50XL-14 ?

Disco: My Yak weighs 10.6 lbs. It's tail heavy and that's with the 10S3P LiPos as far forward as possible and the receiver NiMH 1650 pack mounted on a carbon plate right behind the spinner.

If you can put your hands on TP prolite 2000, that will be much better as you could certainly put less cells in // (hence a lighter plane). The voltage under load is also excellent.
They are right now by far the best lipos on the market.

Hi ya Mike,

Well Im finally done with it, I thought the big holdup would be finding a taller gear since
Chris was out of stock. Thanks to TNT Landing gear that was not a problem But hehe It took
Thunderpower 7 weeks and 6 phone calls before I finally got them to ship out the batteries.
They are the new Pro Lites so Im hoping they were worth the wait. Now I just need some help
with all this rain every day :( Hopefully Ill test fly it this weekend. Congrats on the award for
the 87" Yak conversion you did. Man that is a sweet setup. I actually got to see your picture in the mags :) Thanks for all your advice as you really helped me out !!!!

I have a question,
how come no one is using the castle creations speed controllers?
I was thiking about using a CC 80 speed controller.[&:]

Also how do the larger packs seatle up, I was thking about getting 3 Thunder Power 3s2p packs and running 9s2p 4000 mah with the hacker C50XL-14 motor.

Hi Disco,

I have one of the new Castle Creations HV110 amp speed controler that I'm using in my 2M pattern plane works great and easy to program.. It never has never became warm yet I'm drawing about 69 amps at 2200 watts and using the MaxAmps.com Lipos, and my power plant is the new AXI 5330/18 swinging a 18x12E prop..

Noone uses the CC controllers for higher voltage because until the last couple of weeks they only made controllers that would handle 6 LP cells. However, they now have a new HV series that will handle up to 12 LP cells.

I have all CC controllers and like them. I'm glad they came out with the HV controllers so I can use on on my H9 Funtana 90.

The CC HV units are real nice.. I first saw it at SEFF.. I have a prepoduction version I'm using in my plane now and it has been great to work with.. There is some Beta software out being tested for programing also..
