World Models GS Spit Conversion - Flight Test

Just thought I'd pass on some data from my recent test flight of my World Models giant scale Spitfire.

Motor: Axi 5330-18
Controller: Jeti - 90 amp
Battery: 10s 5000 mah (two 5s 5000's in series)
Prop: APC-E 17x12

Static RPM: 7500
Static Amp Draw: 63.5 amps (67.5 amps without spinner)

(Pretty similar to what MotoCalc generated, btw)

Flight test:

Plane took off at slightly over 1/2 throttle - pitch sensitive (combination slightly rearward CG and too much elevator throw), but in all other regimes a great performer. As it was a test flight, mainly flew at just less than half throttle for the five minute flight. Did go to full throttle for about, oh, five seconds and it scared the **** outta me, it accelerated like a rocket (it was already moving pretty good clip at half throttle), decided that with pitch sensitve, half throttle was a bit more prudent:). Very much a floater on landing (flaps help).

I'll update this as I get more flights if folks are interested.

Take care.

Larry

Larry,

Please post some more info.

I recently completed the Cermark Spitfire with the similar motor/controller/battery combination. There is an electric buld thread on RCgroups, under the name of scalefan. I think it would be neat if you detailed the build, the quality, the problems if any, and some more flights. Hopefully, you will get the trim dialed in.

RE: World Models GS Spit Conversion - Flight Test

Added about 1 lb chunk of lead to motor mount, adjusted control throws, set expo prior to second flight. Fixed weak gear mount - rough landing broke mount loose. End result: wonderful flyer - pitch sensitivity gone (I know, well duh) - I'll post the final cg I found when I unbury my balancing sling from the pile. Put in two 5 - 6 min flights - very neutral at all speeds, big loops, nice axial rolls and yes, fast. Very much a floater on landing (for a warbird), holds in ground effect nicely with no tendency to tip stall.

Thanks,

Larry

Aircraftfreak ... its the 80" version, this plane on GP is still very tail heavy, I believe that they had to add over 1 lb of lead when in GP.
