Rascal 40 conversion

Has anyone done a conversion of the Rascal 40 recently.I've read one or two but they were all done back in 02 or 03 . What I'd like to see is motor mount and where you placed equipment .I plan on using an out runner EQ: AXI 2820 or 2826. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I have converted a Rascal 40. I use the AXI 2826/12 with 3S4200 LiPo or 4s2300 A123. If does quite well. Just mounted the AXI so that the prop would be in the same place as with the Super Tigre 40 that originally powered it. The battery pack went into a hatch underneath and directly behind the original fire wall.

Red thanks for such a quick response, I saw a young man flying the smaller elec. Rascal, and it was just such a great looking airplane I had to have one . I would have liked to get the smaller one,but it's a three channel airplane which is a shame,I think it would make a great park flier.Well I'm going to get the Rascal 40 but being on a fixed income I.E. retired I'll have to get everything piecemeal and put a request in to Santa for an axi and a 40 or 60 amp ESC. I have to keep the other half happy, besides she has more sense .

Could you measure the width, length and depth of the battery area for me. I need about 140mm x 50mm x 26mm to fit 4s2p 4600 A123 packs. But from the pictures I don't think there is enough room. One 4s1p 2300 A123 would be to short a run time. I only use 4s1p A123 in anything bigger than what a 3s1p 2200 fits. So far I have Pulse XT and a Newbee that use them.

If the AXI is too expensive there are less expensive options. For example I'm looking at a KD36-12XL motor and a 40 or 60 amp H-wing (OEMRC) pentium or shield ESC from Hobbycity for a Kyosho Tiger Moth 40. Motor with all the hardware about $30 and ESC $35-45.

I have a general question about Lipos (especiialy the Big 4200 mah that Red used in the rascal) : Can they be charged from a Car battery? If so how much time will it take to charge?

What would be an avg flight time for that Rascal 40 in EP, with that Lipo?
Thanks--747

747 - you can use any DC source to charge them, charging time depends on your charger settings, if you charge at 1C then for a almost depleted lipo battery it takes about 90 mins. Some new batts can charge at 2C but it will shorten the batts life span.

RE: Rascal 40 conversion

I got the urge to electrify my Rascal 40 for winter flying. This is the latest thread that I could find, so I figured anyone reading this would have the latest information.

Som eof you have been flying your Rascals for a while, and with the benefit of 20-20 hindsight, I thought you might have some suggestions beyond what was discussed above. My plans are to use a BP Hobbies 2620/4 with a 4S pack and a BP Hobbies BP-45A ESC. What are your thoughts on something like that?

Any thoughts??

Bob

I would go with a 2826 sized motor ... you can fly with a bigger prop and cruise about ... also not to forget the nice big loops!
