Best 1.2 Four Stroke

RE: Best 1.2 Four Stroke
It really depends on your usage, how comfortable you are with a particular brand, and the airplane design you plan to install the engine in.
But when it comes to push and shove, I prefer the Saito engines myself.
But I do have several different brands of 4 stroke engines. They can all be useful in different applications. One brand may be better for a certain application over the other.

Can't go wrong with either one of them (OS, Saito) as in your original choice. Have both the Saito125 and OS 120FSIII and they both perform well. Saito weighs much less though, but it also has the breather line that sometimes gets more oil to the plane compared to the OS.

yes he's right on that one! if you don't run a piece of fuel tubing from the breather nipple to outside the planes, they will pump all kinds of oil out of them and make a mess, i have forgot to do that many times [:@]

RE: Best 1.2 Four Stroke
G'day I have a few OS four strokes which I like, quite a few Saitos which are great but I really like my Laser Four Strokes. Laser make a 120 and a 150.
www.laser-engines.com
Actually, it really depends on what sort of airframe you are going to put the engine into. If weight is a concern, then Saito. If clean running matters, then the Alpha OS engines and if bullet proof reliability and very easy handling matters then it is the Laser. The Laser also does not need Nitro and does not need muffler pressure and really likes to be mounted inverted.
Oh, I also have two Enyas but they are in the smaller size range. I love them too and I have had quite a few ASP and Magnum four strokes as well (1 at the moment) but I never seem to become really attached to them and end up selling them on. The one ASP I do have has leaky valves though it runs OK (but for how long I wonder). It is not very old.
OK, I like all four strokes.

I'm just the opposite and lean toward the OS for a 1.20. I love Saito engines too and have a bunch of them.

I've got a couple saito 150s and a 180, which are 120s on steroids. I also have a couple O.S. 120 surpasses, a one and a two, both pumpers. The O.S pump is a big problem for parts in later life., other parts for that mater, where the Saito parts seem to be avaiable and usually in stock.
As pointed out, the Saito is a lighter engine. Both brands run well and idle very well, the saito is a bit better in this catorgry.
It was pointed out above that Magnum might be considered. I have several of their smaller four strokes and they are good running engines, but check the weight of the 120, it is considerably heaver than the O.S 120 if I remember correct. It's been a couple years since I checked.
The Saitos are more dificult to time the cam, but not impossible once you pick up the tips. I've rebuilt both the Saito and O.S engines and while the configuration of head and cylinder is different, both are easy to work on. Valve adjustments are the same, and tuning the carb is about the same in the non pumped versions.
A couple of our guys fly YS engines and swear by them once they are running. Once in tune, they seem to b e rock solid.

I used to fly YS, until they went to requiring high nitro and costing just shy of one thousand dollars. It's just a hobby folks and it isn't worth the money that they cost to own and operate these days, as far as I'm concerned.
I don't fly 1.20 sized 3D models, so a few ounces difference in weight is of no significance to me. I buy Saito engines in spite of their ugly looks, when I buy Saito. I prefer the looks of OS engines and their clones. Just a personal thing with me. If the Tower conglomerate gets any more ridiculous with their prices, I won't be buying OS any longer. Magnums work just fine, thank you.

Like my my 120ABC with air-bleed carb, except mine has gold rocker covers like yours. Heavy though! Thanks to KMOT for pic.

RE: Best 1.2 Four Stroke
My opinion of the best 120 four stroke is the YS110. Slightly more power than a 120 or 125 Saito or Magnum. The OS110a is nice for pattern as well but I still like the YS.

Why do you limit the 110FS-a
only for pattern use ?

I limited my response to pattern use because ron9844 (the thread starter) ask the question as it pertains to his pattern plane.

I would also consider the all new O.S. FSa-155P. It's lighter and more powerful than the old 120FS.

The new O.S. alpha range runs very clean. No mess like Saito.

The YS-110 is very strong and economical if you run a Merlin #2009 plug, than you can run 15% nitro fuel instead of 20 or 30% and get a low reliable idle and practically no power loss at WOT. Runs well inverted with this plug too.

This is a repeat of several other posts in this thread.
I have five Saito 125's. I use them in bigger 60 size airframes. They have the same foot print as a OS 91 Surpass and the Saito 100.
Takes around four gallons to get one to were I consider it to be fully broken in. I run 16 X 6 and 17 X 4W APC props. I have several Twist 60's and a You Can Do 60 that I use them on.

...how about the TT F-130S?
The new O.S. 155 is rated at 2.6HP! There is an Enya 155R too. http://www.stevewebb.co.uk/index.php...F&area=Engines
Lots of choices for sure.

HP ratings are irrelevant for model engines comparison because there are no standards or supervision in testing.
There are .21 sized engines rated over 3HP but it's pretty easy to see that wouldn't be enough engine to pull a 10lb. plane off the ground.

The real limiting factor when it comes to large four-strokes is the smallest prop you can swing, because the large four-strokes can swing some serious sized lumber.
