Evo 61nx vs O.S. 65AX

Default Evo 61nx vs O.S. 65AX

I have an Evo 61NX planning to put it on an airframe, but with the release of the new OS 65AX, I'm not entirely sure I want to put the Evo on, what are good vs bad for these engines?
I am really leaning towards the OS but the only thing holding me back is the prices mostly, so what makes this engine so good I should buy it over a Evo 61NX.

If you purchased the Evo 61NX over OS when they made the 61FX, why make the AX65 even a consideration now?

Parts are about 40% of what OS charges.

The liner has fairly hard chrome that takes a few tanks to start loosening up. OS uses a nickel plate process.

Performance of any Evo glow engine that I've seen beats OS. Be sure to run a hotter plug than the OS 8.

OS parts prices make it unreasonable to ever considering a rebuild. Although the Super Tigre G61 ABC wasn't mentioned, the whole engine is just $20 more and they run great, true ABC engines also.
Buying an OS engine at today's prices with so many quality alternatives available in the market, I can't see taking the plunge. Go with the Evo. It's already in hand.

Nitroplanes has the ASP .61 for $59.95 and it will hang in there with the OS powerwise and will probably stomp the Evolution .61NX in power, because it isn't a "real" .61.

The ASP .61 and the Evolution .61NX are made by the same manufacturer. If there is room in the nose of the model for the OS .65AX, then there is enough room for the ASP .61. Why waste $100 for no discernible difference in performance or longevity? I can pretty much afford what I want these days, but still, I don't throw away money for no reason. If you want a real performance boost for spending $200, buy the Rossi AXE .61.

You are trying to divide my interests here because I like both ASP and Evo engines. Okay, why isn't the NX a true .61?

I've got to admit that I have never had a lot of interest in this size 2 stroke engine.

I was putting the 65AX into consideration because I still have my evo brand new in box, if I decided to go with OS I could sell it, plus everyone at my field says OS is better just get it, thats why I need to know

You already have the EVO, so I think you should use it.
Even NIB you'll probably sell it at a huge loss which makes a different choice even more expensive.

I just read further down the forum and now realize that the OP already has the Evolution .61NX, so nix the ASP .61.

IIRC, Barry, the .61NX was built in a forty sized crankcase. That means that the induction path is not up to 10cc standards and the crankshaft induction pathway will be of a smaller diameter than an engine with a 15 or 17mm crankshaft. It's a great .40, but just not much of a .61. As I said, this is based upon my recollection of the details - which, of late, have been fuzzy to say the least.

Now, for the record, I'm planning on obtaining said Evolution .61NX myself. Just for kicks.

Dang, that's closer to 10cc than the Enya .61CX (truly a .58). Not that it matters all that much. I was thinking of the breathing restriction of being built in a 40 sized crankcase.

The .61NX would make a super engine for .40 - .55 intended models. But I'm not sure that it could successfully compete with 10cc pattern engines. Yeah, there I go again - relating everything to pattern performance. Sorry 'bout that.

The 60 sounds like a good choice for someone who wants to overpower a 40 size model without spending a pile of cash. It's $20 less than a 55AX.

Ed, it was all good to talk about.

I haven't flown the .61 but I did mess around with an Evo 52 a couple of years ago and it has a lot of power.

The Evolution line has some quirks when it comes to what they market.

the OS 65ax is way more powerful, the evo 61 engine is lower quality and the head is made of low grade soft aluminum, the threads strip very easily..and the needle s are a bit fussy at times, the os engine is very easy to tune, break in and you barely have to retune it, its set it and forget it

There is no set it and forget it anything, you should be tuning each and ever day you fly.

Rambler, you cannot make that judgement for sombody else, if I wanted the OS .65 I would get it because if I settled for the lesser engine I would never ever be happy with it.

You're right on that point, to each his own. But it appears most people never research any other brand, and those that do, agree OS praise goes way beyond what it really is, like the set it and forget it statement.

There is no set it and forget it anything, you should be tuning each and ever day you fly.
Theres nothing crazying about a OS engine, the facts are there...they just work better look at the reviews..In my opinion they are very user friendly, and easier to tune and require "LESS" fiddling than most..its quality tight tolerances and well made. I've had the evo .40, 46. 60, 61,1.00 and they all needed attention when trying to set the needles. Ive had every type of OS engine as well and they have been nothing but simple to break in,tune and maintain..

Very true, the 65ax have more power,punch,kick whatever you want to call it..i think the 65ax will make you a happy flyer!
