need a 91 and a 1.08,want suggestions on brands to buy, Tigreshark oe Magnum
I have 3 plans I am considering building this winter. Or at least 1 of them. Anyway they all require either a 1.08 or a 91 2-stroker for power. I am not interested in using 4 strokes in these planes. My 2 Saito 1.20's are slated for other projects so don't ask(sniker, snicker)
Anyhow I do not want OS's. I can now hear the booo's starting. I flat out just don't like OS. Never have, never will. I know MVVS makes a good 91 and am thinking that is a good choice. My question is how about Tigre Shark or Magnums.
The prices are right and they fit the size requirements. I would like suggestions , reccomendations or just plane opinion on these engines. any help would be very much so appreciated.
PS ASP would also be an option as would maybe Super Tiger.

I have 2 mag .91's and an older asp .91. All run exceptionally well. The Mags took longer than OS to settle down, maybe 1/2 a gallon.
MA 14x6 "K", 10.5K, 5% 18%(50/50), stock muffler
nearly 12K with a MCP
I have a TS .52, and after about an hr of runtime, the pin that holds the con rod to the crank sheared off??? They replaced the whole engine, no problem. The .52 was as powerful as any .46, not any more. Reliable, but I cannot say anything about the .91's.

Magnum
Last time I checked, all the Tiger Sharks were out of stock. I have never tried them, but like my Magnums.
I have both the 1.08XL and the newer .91XLS. Both are good running engines and 1-flip starters. The .91 is a clone of the OS, but in ABC with a carb that doesn't leak. I have an OS .91FX, too and I fly the Magnum.
The .91 has a better power-to-weight, same weight as a .61 except a larger muffler. 14-6 prop. Works well with a Performance Specialties tuned muffler.
The 1.08 is a torquer, not a revver, 16-6 or 15-8 prop. Good for big planes where you can stand the extra weight up front. Mine is in a scale, 1930's Northrop A-17A dive bomber. The plane is .61 size, but with a radial engine it has a short nose. The 1.08 balances perfectly and the plane scoots with a 15-8. Very un-scale like. I love it.

108's and stuff
Hey Ed:
You still there? What I got is a coupla plans that I want to do one of this winter. I got a 1/5 scale D-7, a Macchi 202 or a Dauntless both around 1/6 scale. The Macchi and D-7 call for a 90. The Dauntless a1.08 to 1.20 2-cycle/. I want a good stump puller for these planes. I do not feel the need for speed! I want power to pull a big prop for lots of thrust. I am looking for suggestions. I like what you have said about Magnums. I have a very old Magnum 40 Pro. I have never really liked it too much. Not enough power and kinda finicky. So I am just the littlest bit leery of Mags. How are yours for reliability and consistancy? Thanks for you help.

Longer break-in than the OS, but total reliability! I use the .91 xls on a fun-fly stick type plane. Lots of idle to wot, and plenty inbetween, without deadsticks. Hmmmmm, I mean you can idle for a flat spin for 45 sec or a min, then jam it wide open, and you can hover at 1/2 throttle for minutes at a time then jam it wide open again. A really reliable engine.

I am running a TS 91 and it has performed extremely well, since I sorted out the needle settings. I think for the money, it is a great engine. Runs real good after about 2 gal.

I have an ASP .91 and it is a good runner. I know you said you don't want a 4 stroke, but the TT .91 might be a good choice. Not as powerfull than the ASP .91 but close with high nitro. About as powerfull as a Saito 100. I had one that was more powerfull but the TT I have now seems to be turning less, but I have only run a gallon through it and maybe it will get better.

The Magnum 1.08 is a good solid performer. There are more powerful motors out there, but the Magnum is a good all round choice.
It does pay to remove the carby barrel and inspect it for metal machining flash etc before initial start though.
I have been caught by this in the past with Magnum's.

The MVVS 91 is a monster. Easily spins a 15x6 prop about 10,000 rpm with a pitts muffler. I've heard that this engine really likes bigger props, I'm going to try a Zinger 16x5 next. Also has the best idle of any glow engine that I've run and throttle response is instantaneous. A tad more expensive than other 91s 2C out there, but well worth it!

I've never been a fan of Magnum based on its beginning history. But I got to say they have come a long way in reliability. A guy in our club is flying a magnum 108 and just raves about how great it is. I have an ASP108. I can only get it to run right side up. At 90deg it acts like its got a fuel delivery problem. Still working on it, but its set aside right now. Dont want to let this one beat me.
