Glow engine on gravel roads. Air Filter?
Engine: O.S. Max .46AX
Hello,
I plan to do alot of taking off, and landing on, gravel roads.Right now i'm practicing taxing at different speeds on dusty gravel roads.
You know the little bit of fuel that is usually left in the exhuast that drips, that seems a little more thicker now. I notice this when i'm cleaning up post-flight.
Should I buy an air filter to put on the intake. I see that gas rc cars have them. Is it even neccesary. Is it possible?
The inner diameter of the filter's tube would need to fit snuggly on 14.3mm.

Using an airfilter in a dusty environment is a good idea. But the RC car engine filters only fit .10-.12 or .21 size engines. Plus they are quite large and hard to keep on a airplane engine with the prop blast and air rushing by.
They used to make some BruLine air filters for model airplane engines. You could get the air filter bodies in three different sizes to slip into the carburetor intake. They had three different grades of filter elements , coarse, medium and fine. They needed to be cleaned regularly but they worked OK. Unfortunately they aren't all that popular so it is whatever the hoppy shops have left in stock that you can get.

There is this one too, it looks like they still sell it.

Oh yeah. Car filters thanks.
I like the looks of those straight tubes above, they might handle the wake of the propeller better.
Found some angled tubes, all are made to fit on about 14mm, but I like the straight below

RE: Glow engine on gravel roads. Air Filter?
I am not one of the guys who use the filters. I have flown from a dry lake bed for many years. My own runway is graded dirt. Never had a problem with dirt. Well, when I have to dig the engine out of the ground after a high speed vertical landing, but I do not think a filter would have helped.
Some guys swear by them, other swear at them.
I did try a filter for a while. I had no luck with them. I had trouble keeping a needle setting or they would fall off in flight.
Buzz.

Haha. Glad to here your having fun too Buzz.
I'm gonna try a filter and keep it clean, if I can stay ahead of it. It will probally get cloged alot. "Crosses fingers"
Would a non-housed straight filter work any better?

You can also use a O ring to hold on one or two layers of panty hose material... The oil in the fuel helps to wet the material and trap dust...good luck!

I don't think the fishnet panty hose will work very well for this application But, I use regular pantyhose for filtering paint and fuel, and for laminating with dope or resin for cowls.
