Default Saito FA65 tuning low needle

Hi.

I cant seem to sort this issue out . So ver to the gurus.

My 65 was in a crash that caused carby damage. I replaced all parts as a kit including intake pipe and any gaskets.

The issue is to get transition the low speed needle needs to be set very rich.
The engine runs and transitions fine like this. However at idle it can be wound in for a much smoother idle but snuffs out when the throttle is opened.

All valve clearances are correct. I have also tried richening up the high speed needle to try and compensate. I have also tried another carburettor assembly just in case,, with the same result. I dont know what to try next!

Hi my name is Bob , had all kinds of trouble with my 65 and it wasn't in a crash but same symptoms you describe , call the guys at Horizon tech support they will walk you trough all set ups and you can fine tune from there . On mine once we got it running pretty good , what ever adjustment we made on the low end we had to go the same distance on the high end but in the opposite dir. ie: if you richen the ls needle 2 clicks , lean out the hs needle 2 clicks , it worked for me, havent touched either one in months , hope I've been of some help it's a great engine Bob A saito club member 705

Thanks Bob for your help.

Im in Australia so ringing horizon is not easy for me.
I did try and richen the H.S. needle as i leaned out the L.S. needle to try and compensate but the transition was still not good .
Im thinking the new carby may not be right..... ?

Hi Steve , just for the heck of it , try this , open the L/S until the top of the screw is flush with the carb then open the H/S 2 1/2 turns , see if this gives you a starting point

stay well down/under Regards Bob saito 705

After doing as Bob says, set the HS needle at absolute peak and then procede to set the LS needle about 1/8th turn lean at a time checking the transition and top rpm after every other change. Whne the engine hesitates slightly on opening the throttle richen LS back out about 1/8th turn and fine tune from there. Snce the transition is more important than the slowest idle, be willing to sacrifice a little idle speed for the best transion, 2,200 rpm idle in lieu of 2,000 if transition is better at the 2,200 or 2,300 rpm setting.

Will reset everything and start again, However, the idle is a rough idle (too rich) and wants to be leaned out. The current idle is banging slightly due to it being over rich. I can get what i call a nice idle but loose the transition. It used to run like this. Thanks Bob and Hobbsy i will get back to a new start point.

You may be moving the needle too far each time?

The ideal point is just rich enough to get a good transition.
