Help, Cant get O.S 45 fsr to idle
Hi,
A fellow member at my club gave me an old O.S. 45 fsr that he had lying around. he does not know where he got it from and does not know the history of the engine.
It starts fine and runs great at full and mid throttle. However, I cannot get it to idle. I can tunethe engine at full throttle with the needle valve with no problem. To get the engine to idle,I have to set the idle mixture so rich that theengine sputters and dies when Iopen the throttle.
If I lean theidle mixture to the point where the engine does not sputterwhen I open the throttle, it dies when I try to idle theengine.
I think that the engine may beworn out.
Iremoved the carburator, took it apart, cleaned it, and replaced theo-rings. I could not find a O-ring thatgoes between the carberatorand engine body, soIusedhigh temp gasket sealer.
The engine runs the same after rebuilding the carburator.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

Sorry, I forgot to mention.
The fuel is only a few weeks old, and works fine in my other engines. I also put in a new plug.

Hi!
It' s a two stroke engine!
First you need an O-ring for carb! It's useless to fix/adjust an engine without one!
Then a OS 8 or Enya 3 glow plug!
Then a 11x6 prop!
How is the compression when the engine is oiled up?
Have you tightened all screws?
When you screw in (remove) the idle screw totally (It's removed by turning it all in...) can you see a small O-ring on the needle?

RE: Help, Cant get O.S 45 fsr to idle
When I rebuilt the carburator, I did replace all of the O-rings.
I should have mentioned before, but I am using an OS 8 glow plug and a 11 - 6 prop.
The compression feels pretty good when the engine is oiled up. It might be a little light.
All of the screws are tight.
The needle valve does have a new o-ring.
Thanks

I have had these engines all my life. I have an old OS45FSR on a Midwest SweetStik that I built in 1984. I have always run the Fox Glow plugs with the idle bar and have never had a problem with idle.........give that a try.
Cheers,
Andy
Thanks.

I agree with TFF.
I too have one of these engines and could not for the life of me get it to idle on a OS 8, OS 3, or a McCoy #9. Put in a K&B with idle bar, problem solved!!!

Wow, I will definitely buy a K&B or Fox idle bar plug this weekend and let you all know how it turns out. Thanks for the advice.

OK,
Ibought a K&B idle bar plug and installed on to the engine.
This did not make a difference in the idle.
I am still not able to get the engine to idle properly.
Any other ideas?

Some guesses you might think about. Get a new ring from Bowman. They never had high compression but if not enough it it wont run right. That is as long as the sleeve is not worn out. That is one reason the engines were so good, they could be slap wore out and you could still fly your plane. Another could be the front bearing letting air in messing up the mixture. Fresh bearings might help. As long as everything is sealed up gasket wise, your going to be back to the carb. Does it have the right needle valve? The glow plug will help when you do hit the big problem. What brand prop and what muffler? How does it run adjusted with the muffler pressure disconnected?

Ok,
I took apart the engine and found that the cylinder sleeve had several deep scores. The scores looked like they had rusted. I suspect that may be the problem. I don't suppose any knows where I can find parts for an old OS 45 fsr engine?
Thanks for the input from everyone.

Hi!
All Idle -bar plugs are dinasaurs! Not used for modern engines as they do not give the same power or idle as ''modern plugs'' do (i,e OS 8 Enya 3).

One of my flying buddies from the old days, Tony Smuz, was fortunate enough to be one of the first Salem County R/C Club members (Salem County, NJ) to obtain and fly an OS .45FSR back when they first came out. I don't recall him using anything other than Fox or Tower non idle bar glow plugs. He never had an idle problem as is being described by the OP. I always envied him that engine, but I had to be happy with my OS .61 pattern engines. No time for sport flying in those days, just pattern practice - practice - practice - practice.
I did pick up a used sample of this engine a while back. It needs cleaning and a check-out run before installing it on a model. Looking at it brings back a lot of memories - all good....
