Default OS 52FS overhaul

I have just broken down my motor for the first time for overhaul but there didn't appear to be a cylinder head gasket when I dealt with that area.
The manual and associated exploded view diagram which came with the motor shows a gasket.
Did I unknowingly misplace the gasket or was there none in the first place
?
Any assistance on this mystery will be appreciated.

The cylinder head gasket is the same color as the cylinder head. Look carefully, and you'll see it. The "raw" head has molding marks inside the channel where the gasket goes. Use a pin or very sharply-tipped knife to carefully lift the gasket out.
