A US gallon is 3.8 liters which is a Coolpower bottle. An imperial gallon is 4.5 liters.

Fiendish is the word. In Canada we always used the British gallon, then went metric with 4 liters, at the same price of course, then everything is US gallons, same price. Now everything is 3 liters, same price. Well really quite a bit more i guess.

I pay about $13/gal for 10%, picked up at the local S&W factory. The price has not changed much in the 14 years that I have been in the hobby. It might have been $9/gal when I first started. I spend about $100 per year for glow fuel. Not a big problem. If I converted all my airplanes to gas I probably would not live long enough to recoup the investment in engines and support equipment from the cost savings of gasoline over glow.

Rocketman kudos for you putting that info out there.They just don't get it.As i have said in this thread earlier i run all 2 stroke engines,i have 3 O.S 1.60FXs fantastic running engines not to mention all my other glow engines that run very well.I didn't have the energy to put all the cons of gas in print as you did.And as the price difference in fuel think about It? Many of you are using smaller engines which use little fuel to begin with.Then put the cons which rocketman has mentioned and there are more,before you go to gas consider all the facts.

Agreed. The cost of conversion would buy a good lot of conventional glow fuel.

As an aside, how much oil do you guys use in your small petrol engines? I understand that they are generally fitted with plain bearings, just like their glow cousins.

Where are you guys getting your fuel mixing supplies so cheap. I checked the internet and came up with the following prices to mix 5 gallons of 20% nitro 20% oil 60% methanol.

$51.00 1 Gallon Nitro-methane Amazon Torco Brand w/shipping
$48.00 1 Gallon KL-200 wo/shipping
$42.00 3 Gallons Methanol Nelson Paint wo/shipping
$141.00 For 5 gallons=$28.20 per gallon, and the shipping isn't even included for the methanol or the oil.

I can buy Wildcat 20/20 for less than that at my local hobby shop.

I use castor at $23/gal and I split the Klotz Techniplate at $40/gal with a friend. I only use a quart a season. I get nitro at $55/gal (Torco at Amazon, last price I paid with free shipping) and methanol I buy locally at $2.50-2.75/gal. The crap you get at the paint store is probably denatured ethanol.

My car fuel is the most expensive blend which is 30% nitro 8% oil at $20/gal or thereabouts. Regular aircraft fuel 5% nitro 20% castor is around $9.75/gal. I save at minimum $15/gal off hobby shop prices in my area. $98/5 gallons is much cheaper than the $160 it would cost at the hobby shop for almost the same thing.

At $3.00/gallon it would get my 20/20 fuel price down to $21.00/gallon.
Where do you buy your methanol locally?
I live fairly close to you, so we would be shopping in about the same areas.

Wilson Oil Company in Red Wing is where I get mine. I last paid $2.65 this summer and $2.35 last summer. Lubrication Technologies in St. Paul sells methanol but it was $36/5gal. They use nice metal cans though, I have two 5-gal cans I fill. 10 gallons of methanol lasts me a long time.

Well, I had not flown glow for quite a while now and thinking about this thread I decided yesterday to take one of my glow planes out. I fired it up and flew it about 6 or so minutes and sort of shrugged and said ugghhh. Landed it and immediately got out my gasser. The guys just looked and me and snickered some. I told them I just could not take it

Cost is not the only thing that is awesome about the gassers - the sound, the nice low end torque, the simplicity of starting, simple tuning, the cleanness, did I state the sound No disrespect to the glow flyers out there, however there is just a coolness factor to the gassers that is hard to describe.

I plan to keep the last glow plane a while longer, but after yesterday it's time may have come and I mostly see it on the bench taking up space. I think in the future a small gas profile is going to be parked where the glow plane sits.

Those pesky gas engines sound too much like weed wackers and chainsaws and smell like them too.. 8,000rpm does nothing for me personally either, so it's a landslide for me to stay glow. Now if they made 2.5-4cc gasoline glow plug engines for cars there might be some creedance to switch since cars are half of what I run. But I'm kind-of a die hard glow guy.

Obviously the "glow" engine wasn't a 4-stroke or the "ugghhh" comment would have been reserved for the 2-stroke gasser.

Is just matter of choices , I fly electric , gas , and nitro . I enjoy all of them I a different way . I can be a weird guy but I like to rub my planes with alcohol to clean the glow mess.

I use electric on my pattern sips is just very predictable and reliable ,I do on park flyers , micros and 3D planes as well .

The gas power I enjoy on my large scale aerobatic planes .

As far my O.S 1.20 AX (is orphan now cause y crashed my beloved Venus II) , my OS 75 AX (GP Cap Matt Chapman) ; I Love them.

I wont get rid of them because I really enjoy how the burned glow fuel smell .Unfortunately there are not many ARF's on the market for 1.20 size engines any more.

I don't think any gas engine will beat the sound of a Saito 56.

However, W8YE had a gas engine set a bit rich and it had that nice ripping sound to it. It was plenty loud and everybody liked it. (That was what you replaced the Zenoah with in Glenn's plane that you bought, Jim)

Why Klotz oil? A mix of castor and Morgans synthetic would be better and cost about $25 a gallon.

I hate the sound of gas engines as well, but I think its because they remind me of the yard work I need to do.

Morgans green synthetic oil (same thing used in cool power) is approximately $60/gal. Klotz is $40/gal. I don't see how the green stuff is better than the red stuff other than one is 50% more expensive than the cheaper stuff.

The blue oil (which is used in coolpower) is better for four strokes.

And the coolpower purple MV is preferred for YS four strokes.
