Saito .45 back plate
I just bought a used Saito .45 and the mounting boss on the back plate that the carburetor secures to is broken. Would anyone here have a back plate from an old junk engine or maybe even an old parts engine? I cleaned this thing and super glued it, but I certainly don't expect that to be a permanent fix.
An interesting thing I discovered while cleaning this engine: on the exhaust side of the crankcase where Saito always identifies their engine size, this engine had a bright blue tag that read "45", During the cleaning process, as I was blowing the water out of the engine with compressed air, this tag came off. Under it, stamped into the block like Saito normally does it, was the number "50". So what is the story? This bright blue tag was obviously put there at the factory, but why? What size is this, really? 45 or 50?

Hi Jollypopper,
I've had success glueing bits like that back together with JB weld epoxy. Cleanliness is the key. Might be worth trying if you can't find a back plate.
I would guess that Saito used the same casting for the 50 and the 45 with the bore and/or stroke modified as required. Just a guess but it's pretty common practice for many manufacturers to make several different displacement engines in the same case.
Good luck in your search.
