Does this Piston/Sleeve Look Trashed to You?
This is an OS .61SXHWC recently pulled from an ergo 60 helicopter. After running like a sewing machine for nearly two years, the motor is starting to exhibit some reliability problems. I pulled the motor and noticed the piston looks a little burnt and scored. What do ya' think?

It's ringed, right?? I don't think that looks bad unless the ring is shot..no pics of the ring, but a pic of the ring won't tell much (unless it's missing or something).
How's the compression?? Won't be too high on a ringed engine, but it shouldn't just spin right on around, ought to have some compression.
How do the bearings feel?? Is it silky smooth when you turn it over, or a little gritty feeling??
I'd suspect the ring or bearings...that piston doesn't look all that bad IMHO.

Yes, this is a ringed engine and as far as I can tell by looking in the exhaust port, the ring is intact. The bearings feel great. If anything a little syrupy. About the compression, When turning the motor over by hand relatively quickly, it feels like it has good compression. However, when you turn the motor over slowly or pause slightly during the compression stroke, you can feel the chamber leaking/losing compression. If you turn the motor over slow enough, it will cycle completely with minimal resistance/compression. The motor was inactive for about two months prior to this week.

Sounds about normal for a ringed engine. Taking the head off and looking at the cyl will tell you much more. Check for blue sections and score marks. Fine lines are OK but deep score marks are a no no.

I would suspect a fuel quality problem(is it fresh) or a fuel delivery problem(sucking extra air somewhere). I find that even fairly old & worn engines will run quite well if the fuel, and fuel supply and carb adjustment are good... even if power is down a bit. Your piston just looks like it is stained(do you use any caster oil).... not unusual at all. A good cleaning may be in order especially if there is any sludge burnt onto the ring groove causing it to bind and not seal correctly. Good luck!
