RE: MDS 1.48 muffler
I did not have any luck the first time around but, I found that time.
You don't have any used ones you might want to swap for a pitts style do you?

Hay MLC: you ever run that MDS 1.48? if so how?? I've got one with two or three tanks, I can't remember. but I can't get it to run an entire tank out without quiting. Lost a brand new DP 540 edge on the first flight over this motor.

I helped a buddy break one of these in. He has it in an edge 540 as well. Could not get a rich needle to save my life. I finally removed the remote needle setup entirely and went direct to the carb. Problem solved and man it's turning out to be a good runner. Great idle and very good transition!

RE: MDS 1.48 muffler
I never used the remote valve, stayed at the carb from the start.
It idled fine from the start, transition was good, it just would not run a full tank. stop for no apparent reason, on the ground or in the air. just quit......
In a box now with half a gallon of fuel ran through it. $169.00 motor, $39.00 pitts muffler, $30.00 spinner IN A BOX!!! and I'm scared to use it. Oh yea a $450.00 plane scrapped as well.
This was $700.00 well spent.

I now have three 1.48s, two 2.18s, a .78, a .68, a .58, a .48 and two .40s, all except the 40s have the remote needle in use. 5% nitro and 20% oil is the rule, most are running on Hangar 9 SuperPlugs.

hobbsy:
Are you saying it will run better with less nitro? I was using 15% cool power. There was a lot of oil residue afterun too.
It was also very hot to the touch, didn't use any gaddigets just fingers so it might not have been hotter that sposed to be just finger blistering.
I see the mokis' run on very low nitro content also so, what is it about these motors that let them run on this low content? and why would high content cause it to not want to run? If I can get it to run well I'd like to use it.
Thanks, Miloh.

They have far too high compression for 15% nitro. Fox engines are the same way, if you want to have a really cranky Fox engine, just try to run some 15% nitro in it. Sometimes you can get it to run well at high throttle settings by using a colder plug but then the idle and transition suffer. I run 5% nitro in every two stroke glow engine I own and none lack for power.

I am going to be at Montgomery County Aeromodeler park this Friday, have you been there before? If you send me a ph# I'll call you at a convenient time tomorrow.

RE: MDS 1.48 muffler
Miloh, I would say three tanks of fuel is not even close for this motor. I have over two gallons run thru mine and just now starting to work well. I had it on a CMP Katana and it just was not enough motor.
It also has not been a smooth road with this thing, first 3 flights ended with the prop not spinning. Then I had a head gasekit blow, but that is also my fault as the I did not check the head bolts after the first gallon of fuel. I also had the overheating problem. I run WildCat 5%nitro 16%oil (and a little castor for good luck) and sims to be doing well. I am also using the FOX idle bar plug. I am still on my hunt for FAI fuel. Having a hard time finding the methonal locally.
I just put it on a UCD mounted upside down. Runs good and yanks the plan off the ground. When I make sure I am not flooding it because it is upside down, it flip starts in two trys. Better than my OS91FS did on this plane.
I would say stick with it. Bench run it, or run it on a plane, but run atleast a gallon of fuel thru it with low nitro and plenty of oil. I also followed hobbsy sugestions and all have worked well.

RE: MDS 1.48 muffler
I use a Snuffler muffler from J'Tec I think. Lots of people have MDS problems. Mine is a 1.48 and maybe the third from Horizon. But I has been running fine for last year. No dead sticks. Starts right up and I am using 15% S&W fuel. I have it on an UltraSport 1000 and if they make them again, I would get an OS 1.60. It was not out when I got the US1000.
