Default Saito91 vs Saito100

Hi to all!

First of all: I am new here and I am not a native english speaker, so maybe it is hard to understand for you what I try to say.

In the last days I have studied nearly all threads about Saito engines; especially those about the Saito 91 and the Saito 100. The reason is, that I can get a Saito 91 from a friend. This engine should be used in a Great Planes Skybolt and as far as I have read here, everyone suggests a Saito 100 at minimum for those plane. But when looking at Horizon Hobby, Saito himself talks only about 300-700 Upm difference. That does not sound very much and so I want you to tell me something about your experiences with those two engines.

Thanks a lot

Werner

Werner,
That RPM difference comes from swinging different size propellers. The .91 swings 14" diameter props whilst the 1.00 swings 15" or 16" props....thus giving more thrust. The 1.00 has more power than the .91 and sits in the same mount. This is really for planes that need a bit more power to pull out of a hover.
It's really your choice which of the engines you think suits your needs and does what you want attached to your planes nose. I'd go with the 1.00 just for the power and a few dollars difference. Another point is the 1.00 is two ounces lighter than a OS .91 and gramms heavier than the Saito .91.

Cheers.

Default RE: Saito91 vs Saito100

Hallo,

Saito's new FA-100 will turn an APC 14 x 8 prop 300 to 700 rpm more than either the Saito .91 or O.S. .91
I think they are talking about Uprm-differences with the same Prop. In addition to that, it is often told here, that a Saito 91 is a little bit stronger than an OS 91 so maybe the Urpm-difference between the Saito 91 and the Saito 100 is about 300-500.

As I have mentioned above, I have read that a Saito 100 fits very well to the GP Skybolt (about 9lb). So I am asking me if there is a really feelable difference between these two engines because I can get the 91 relatively cheap from a friend. On the other hand it does not make any sense to underpower the Skybolt only to save money.

Greetings

Werner

Yes, the Saito 1.00 has more power than the .91, BUT the .91 will fly your plane quite well.

Since you mentioned the .91 is from a friend and at a lower price, it would seem to be better for you. Having said that, I add that a new 1.00 would come with a three year guarantee and you must be sure that the .91 is in good shape. - Wear, time run, crashes, overheating, maintenance are all important and may be worth buying the bew engine unless you are sure of the condition of the .91 It's your decision and anything we say here is only based on both engines being in the same condition.

Werner:

The FA-91 is an older design, a little bit heavier and a little bit less powerful than the FA-100.

If you are buying new then definitely get the FA-100, but with the offer of a good FA-91 at a much reduced price the FA-91 will still fly the Skybolt very well. Don't be afraid of it.

The Saito engines are almost impossible to destroy, even the oldest can be brought to new condition, zero timed, without a great cost. Providing only that there is no crash damage. If you have to buy a new cylinder it can get expensive.

This is not to say the later engines have not been improved. The two you ask about are an example, the 100 is lighter and more powerful than the 91, another pair is the FA-80 and the FA-82. The 82 is again lighter and more powerful than the FA-80.

I have no problem with the plastic back plates on the later Saito engines, the Saito plates don't break, unlike a competitor's plastic ones. The only modification to the later engines I do not like is the elimination of the bronze bushing in the con rod, but I know of no problem from the change. But this makes me even more insistent on using some castor oil in the fuel mix.

Anyway, if you have a good price on the FA-91 get it, it will serve you very well.

Bill.

Hallo

and

BUT the .91 will fly your plane quite well
sounds really good to me.

I mean the 91 Saito is nearly new and in absolutly perfect conditions and, also very important, I can buy it for a perfect price. The only thing I was sceary about was that it could be too weak for the GP Skybolt.

Thanks a lot for your help

Werner

The Satio 91 is actually lighter and slightly more compact than the Satio 100. I know this for a fact. But the 100 is quite abit more powerful too. I would go with the 100 if fit is not a problem.

Buy Saito 100 and don't think a lot. Otherwise you will end begging for more power with Saito 91.
Take Saito 91 if it is 2-3 times cheaper only (or free). Be ready to spend some time to break in Saito 100.

Be ready to spend some time to break in Saito 100.
i just bought a 100 for my harrier 3-d, one tank on the ground it ran well enuff I flew the second, have 1 1/2 a gallons thru it now and it purrs like a kitten. I have had 9 saitos to date and this one broke in faster and easier than any other. It definately shakes more. (and i do know how to run them properly)
It does put out more than my 91's, but not much, maybe that will come with more time on it. All in all it does not have near the power I was expecting reading these posts about it. Dont get me wrong I do like it, forum conversation led me to believe it was a lot more tho.Lesson learned.
