Default new saito 82 questions

I have a new satio 82 engine, looking for specific fuel recommendations and glow plug combinations. Also, I am interested in any information concering problems I might encounter. Is there a brand of engine mount that is perferable?

Any information appreciated
thanks!

The manual has some specific recommendations on page 16. From everything I've read, Saito engines love fuel with high nitro content. Many people run heli fuel with 30% nitro.

I had to change the factory plug to a Fox Miracle plug on my Saito .91 before I could get a reliable idle. Also the OSMax 4 cycle plugs are very good in Saitos. You probably need to run at least 15% nitro for a good running engine and more nitro is incrementally better for power and incrementally worse for your pocketbook.[:@]

The standard plug that comes with the Saito is a good plug, the OS "F" plug is also good. True, 4-strokes tend to like higher nitro, but 15% is plenty, all synthetic oil is preferable to syn-castor blend. I alternate between SIG Syn Plus 15% nitro, 18% all synthetic oil, and Morgan Fuels "Cool Power" 15% nitro. One advantage to Cool Power is that you don't need to worry about after-run oil. When you sart running your engine, don't fool with the low-end needle for a while, Saito presets it for best performance during break-in. Run the high speed needle a little rich for a while-- best way is to adjust engine for top rpm (measure with a tach), and back the needle out (Richen) until rpms drop 1000-1500 from peak.

I have a .56 and a .65 saito, will never have anything else but Saito; great engines.

Thanks for the information!

the plane is a GP rv-4

i know it is overpowered..but
82 is lighter than the 70 series, no real compulsion to fly at full throttle all the time!

I use a DuBro anti vibration mount on my L-4B, works great.

My .82A is currently turning an APC 14x6 at 9,200 so a 14x4 might be a little light. Cap, did you mean a 12.5x7 three blade, you're obviously referring to a Graupner. I have a couple of the 12.5x7 three blades.

Hey, the 12.5x7 3-blade will look great on your RV-4. It will load it about right. I love the sound of Graupner 3-blade, as the prop sound pitch will sound much higher-pitched than engine combustion pitch.

As for the 14x4W, it peaks @ 10200 on 15% nitro, @ 10700 on 30% nitro. The peak torque of this engine occurs at around 9800 rpm. So, for 3D, I'd say use 14x6 or 15x4 on 30% nitro, or use 14x5 on 15% nitro.

This engine vibrates a lot for its size. For motor mount, a sturdy nylon mount will do. I broke the little 2-piece .40-size nylon mounts that came with my Funtana. But something like a GP adjustable mount for 2-stroke 50 would do fine.

With one exception, all the advice in this thread has been pretty good.

Saito used to recommend all synthetic oil, but several years ago they realized that engine life was enhanced for the average user when a castor oil blend was used. They wont void the warranty for people who insist on all synthetic, but they do not recommend it.

Morgan's Omega 15% is my fuel of choice in all my Saito engines, your fuel in your engines is your choice.

Bill.

I think a 12.5 anything is too small for that engine; it has enough torque to turn a 16 inch prop without overloading it, although you wouldn't get max rpm. A 14 or 15 would be optimum, maybe a 13-8 if you used a 3 blade. This is based on what I see guys at the field use, and my experience with my Saitos. I use a 14-6 on my .65 (Master Airscrew K-series) and it will turn just under 10K rpm. I think the smaller prop you mentioned will let the engine over-rev--remember, you'll get as much as another 500-600 rpm in the air as you will on the ground. The 4-strokes will handle loading up better than a 2-stroke, so err on the larger side. Buy a 13-8, a 14-6 and a 15-4 or 5 and see which one comes closest to what you want, performance wise. The larger diameter will provide more thrust.

Whether or not Saito recommends blended or all synthetic, it will run cleaner on all synthetic, and as for lifespan, there's a guy at the field running a 1.50 he's had for at least ten years, runs it on all synthetic, looks and runs like new, and it gets run a lot--he goes to a lot of regional fly-ins and warbird meets (it's in a BUSA DR-I)

Let me say to start my .82 is on a Funtana. All i do with it is 3-D. I broke it in on 15% PowerMaster and a 14X4W APC. This is a decent combo but it will over speed the engine. Mine would tach 10,600. I only opened the throttle 100% on verticle lines. I have since switched to 30% rich'sBrew airplane (not heli) fuel and a APC 15x4W. It would turn the 15x4W but it would not spool up with authority. I am sure a 14x6 would be a good choice on a sport plane. I just don't fly mine that way.

Dave,

You may find Pro Zinger 15x4 to your liking. Just watch out for prop clearance. Landings may become expensive.

I thought the same thing. I tried a Zinger 14x4 on the .72 and liked it. I just have to decide what I want more as far as the CG. AT 6-3/8" the 3-D is the best. It just wont land very well. Every landing is a controlled crash. AT6-1/4" it will land much better but wont elevator or waterfall until it burns a little fuel. I may try one anyway. I just hope it last more than one flight.
