- Ciao Super Puma:
Your engine looks great ! I also have ordered one 7-35 and am waiting for it...
Your prop is 18/6" ? Did you mesure the RPM now ?
It would be very attractive in an Bleriot XI i think, at a 1/4 scale. That's (one of ) my dream...
Or in a Stinson SR9 ?

RE: Everything Radial Engines
The Chicago show is this weekend at the Stephenson convention center near O'Hare. UMS contacted me directly to let me know that they will be there. It's only about 20 minutes from my house, so I'll be there for sure. I'll also be taking home a ST-735 to save on the shipping costs.

Tom, here's a short video of the ASP pulling the Fleet around. I wanted to keep the high end below 9,000 rpm so I went with a 20-8 Classic Master Airscrew. It wasn't leaned out all the way and it was turning at 7500 rpm.
I have to re-do that video. I shook too much.

RE: Everything Radial Engines
Hi Maxam,I was wondering if your exhaust ring for the 7-70 had arrived and if it was easier to fit than mine was.The Saito 325 ring arrived from Kelvin at Keleo and I test fitted it, while difficult to fit it was a lot easier than the Seidel.I would love tohear what these engines sound like, but as they won't be fitted to airframes for some time,Idon't want to risk corrosion problems, cheers, Mark.

Hi Maxam,
might be a little late, since you posted in June. But my recommendation is this: Don't run the Seidel on anything else but Pure Methanol with 5% Oil! No Nitro, not more oil!
cheers, martin

Southernx, No I have not received the collector ring yet!!! I should cancel the order. The ring was marked in stock when I ordered.
Spuetz, The interior of my seidel 7-70 and 9-90 both look brand new with no corrosion. Both these engines have much run time on them and both will idle at 1000rpm WITHOUT glow heat for a long time and not lose a cylinder. I have settled on 7% oil and 6% nitro with unusually cool running temps.

RE: Everything Radial Engines
Just got my Seidel 770 yesterday! I order it directly from UMS (just sent them an email) and after the bank transfer cleared it took about 10 days for shipping from India to Japan. I paid 836 Euros for the engine at 74 Euros for shipping. What a beauty!
Here's one first question: What effect,if any, does the length of the exhaust tubes have on the engine's performance? I'm planning (at least initially) to run the engine without a collector ring. Anyway, I am just curious.
BTW, I've only checked back a few pages, but I assume it has been discussed here that Seidel in Germany filed for bankrupcy.

RE: Everything Radial Engines
Kelvin at keleo-creations is now offering a rear collector ring for the UMS-Seidel 7-70. He was also working up a ring for the nine-cylinder a few months ago, so that may show up in the near future.

RE: Everything Radial Engines
Do you know if you have to ship him the engine to have the ring attached or is this a "do-it-yourself" job? I've read here that it's tough to add the rear collector since it involve disassembling the mount.
*****
Now that's I've looked at the photos, it looks like the Keleo ring would be a snap to install as its diameter is larger than the mounting feet. The Seidel ring was smaller.

RE: Everything Radial Engines
I don't think you have to ship him the engine; he has a customer who sent him a seven and a nine cylinder UMS Seidel, and he used them to mock up the ring. He said that the cylinders on the UMS radials can turn on the case (cylindrical mount), whereas the original German Seidels had a square mount to the case that did not allow enough movement. This makes it possilble to fit the ring to the UMS Seidel.
Would be best to send him an email and ask any questions before ordering one, though.

RE: Everything Radial Engines
Kmot, Seidel filed for bankruptcy on Oct. 12. There was some discussion of this on my Seidel thread in the scale forum:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_98..._8/key_/tm.htm
What I wonder is WHO owns the actual manufacturing rights to the engine? Did Seidel sell them outright to UMS? That'd be my guess. So UMS isn't just "our Indian production facility" but rather the actual manufacturer and Seidel had become just a "reseller." Also note that Seidel's website is currently down but says that the site is being reworked and will be back up "soon."

RE: Everything Radial Engines
Hi Folks. I'm back from the Hobby show today, and I've brought my UMS Seidel 735 back in tow. It's a beautiful little engine. It captures all of the detail of the 770, but the heads are now fully machined to resemble the original cast heads. All in all, a site to behold! The prototype is quite different from the engine that they sold me. Notice the angled pushrods and classic Seidel design!
I'm attaching some eye-candy here for all to see. I'll also put some photos of the 990, and a side-by-side for direct comparison.
It was quite noisy on the floor, but I was able to chat with the UMS folks for a while. It seems that they were at the show, primarily to seek out candidates for American distribution. It sounds like the Seidel Bankruptcy is not slowing them down in the least.
I would love to see a ST-14-140 and ST-14-70 in the future, but that's probably not likely. There were hints of the 70 and 35cc versions on ignition, but it sounded like they were just throwing the idea around.... nothing in the works that I was able to tell.
***Edited to include the original 735 image from their product literature. The new design is much improved! I suppose those of you who might have the older design have something of a rare collectable!***

RE: Everything Radial Engines
As a quick follow-up... There was another Indian company at the show too. authenticscale.com will show you their products. The didn't seem to want to talk to me when I was there (gave up after milling about for 5 minutes). But I did catch that they are rolling out their first batch of seven 9-cylinder engines soon. Honestly, the sample that they brought with them looked rough. It has what appeared to be some corrosion and I wasn't impressed. A shame, because it would be a good thing to have more players in the market. Now just checking their site, it looks like they are using other peoples work & photos to promote some of their projects too. That BR2 on thier site was built by Lee Hodgson of Ageless engines.... It's Lee's photo of Lee's engine.. they probably stole his plans too.
(Whoops.. I spoke too soon. They are not selling the Bentley and they do credit Lee for his engine. My bad)

RE: Everything Radial Engines
I saw on a german web site, Seidel was going to come out with a ST-160-B. A 7 cylinder 160cc gasser. the info is at http://www.sonnenhof-modellbau.ch/Ve...ngsmotoren.htm
and one other site as well but cant remember the name. any news about that one? i was really wanting this engine.. smaller than a Moki 150 and bigger displacement..

RE: Everything Radial Engines
The 7-35 is definitely a sweet little engine. But I actually preferred the old design (at least the aesthetics of the parallel rods) since it looked more like the Clerget engine. Ah, well, I ended up going with the 7-70 anyway.
