Default Magnum XL400 Radial

I happen to have magnum radial engine new in box never used. I want to prepare break it in but I need information.
It came without instruction book and I have no experience operating such large complex engine.
Does anyone have experience, comment, feed back about this engine?

I have several questions
1. What kind of fuel? some said all castor lub should be used. other said synthe/castor blend is OK, what is your opinion?
2. Prop size: The largest prop I have is 20x6 menzs wood. Is it large enough?
3. glow plug driver: Do I need onboard glow plug driver? I have several 3000mA NI-MH cells. How many cells should I connect in Parallel in order to get sufficient capacity?
4. Break in procedure: Can I do it same way for big single cylinder four cycle engine or are there different method for radial ?

Any help is appreciated.

Break it in the same way you would a big four stroke with the same fuel.

You will have 5 glow plugs. You could run two plugs from one battery if they are 3000mah?

I don't think the prop is big enough?

Enjoy,

Jim

Jim, Thanks for your comment.
Castor blend fuel isn't readily available in my area. so I have to mix it myself. Could you suggest what percentage of castor should mix?
I'm using 18% all synth fuel for many years. Add 5% castor oil making 23% blend, Do you think it is safe for XL400?

As for size of prop, could you tell me what is good for break-in run?
Onboard battery: Do you mean 3 cells (in parallel) is minimum?

I would just add 2% caster to your regular blend for the first couple gallons then go to your regular blend.

Props range from 18x12 to 24x8 depending on your ground clearance. Example 18 X 12, 20 X 10, 22 X 8, 24 X 8, etc.

Enjoy,

Jim

I would use at least three of those batteries in parallel for the glow plugs.

Enjoy,

Jim
