ORIGINAL: Ernie Misner

Question: will ordinary exhaust deflectors melt on 4-stroke mufflers? The LHS told me absolutely not to use them on 4-strokes, but at the field I do see them....?

Thanks,

Ernie
Ernie, i have used a peice on 14mm brass tubing on my 100 for over a year now and it has not fallen off yet, used permatex red high temp threadlocker to hold it on.

It runs nicely? Then don't question it, it's adjusted as it should be. There's no "Right" or "Wrong" mehanical position. Just enjoy the flexibility of the engine.

Maybe it takes that many posts to convince some people. Actually I said I did experiments PROVING what you and I said. I Also just did it again with the 65. Only one screw holding it in. You could actually see the back plate move in and out with each stroke of the piston at idle . At full throttle it was just a blur. Engine turns 9900 RPM and idled beautifully. It quit when the last screw fell out and the back plate blew off taking the carb with it.

Someone else said a 4 cycle crankcase is an air pump and the engine would run poorly for some weird reason based on that erroneous fact. In fact it will have no effect on a four cycle engine unless it is one like a YS that uses the crankcase to force fuel into the carb.

Bill,

It was torque wrench that made that post about a 4 cycle being a airpump and a loose back plate cuaing it to run poorly. He has obviously removed the post as it is no longer there.

I put an exhaust deflector on when starting up the first time to keep fuel from soaking my wrist watch as I hold the plane. I then pull it off once the engine is running.

That is sad to hear about GrnBrt. Thanks for posting the message about his passing away.

I have wanted a Saito .60 Twin for a very long time. I have watched ads on RCU and eBay for a couple years. It was always the same old story. Someone selling at regular retail price plus shipping. Or selling a used version for almost as much as a NIB version.

Well, I just placed my order for a NIB version to power my Goldberg Cub. Chief Aircraft has a monthly e-mail special you can subscribe too and they will send you a printout of unadvertised specials. I just paid $495. [X(] No tax and free shipping. That saved me $105 over buying it direct from Horizon. Woot!

I'm still choking, but I will get over it.

I purchased the Saito 100 twin to install in my Glodberg Cub. I was not happy with the size fit, to get the prop shaft in the proper position, the mounting brackets were going to be outside the top of my cowling. So... I installed a saito 72 in it instead, and bought a T/F Cessna 182 to put the 100 twin in.

On the 2000 rpm idle at 1/8 turn open, that is great IF it will then transition without hesitating or dying from being too lean. Otherwise, a slightly richer bottom is needed (compromise) to get a dependable transition.

Bill, you shouldn't use fragmented sentences. Haw!

By definition there is no such thing as a fragmented sentence. That implies a sentence. It's either a phrase or a sentence fragment.

Bill

Thanks for the notes

Having just bought a couple of 82's I was interested in your running in procedure, it seems to contradict the Saito recommendations?

Moon:

My running in is based on experience with many different engines, automotive and FS aircraft as well as model. It is quite different from Saito's suggested method bit it works for me, I get to enjoy the engine while others are still watching theirs make a mess in the yard. And I've never had any problem from having done it my way.

Either method works, mine gets in the air faster and doesn't waste anywhere nearly so much fuel.

Definitely do the initial running on a stand, it's much easier than doing it on a plane, and also neither risks the airplane nor puts the added stress on it.

Using my way or Saitos way ends up with the same result, your choice.

Bill.

I think I will take the Masters advice on this one, as you say saves on wasted fuel and gets you in the air sooner.

Well I guess I should apply for membership. Have a FA1.50GK that is slated to go on a MoJo 65in. Just bought a 1.25 for on an OMP 65in. Yak. And have a 72 coming in this week for on my 40 size MoJo.
How is the .40?? I am looking at it for on a 25 size MoJo as the 40 is a little lighter than the .25 2 stroke that the kit is spec. for. Also anyone have anyinfo on the 1.25yet???

Saito 1.25GK
Fuel, first run with MasterAirscrew 16x6 Classic, WildCat 10% nitro Premium 16% 80/20 lube.
Rpm===9,554
All subsequent runs using CoolPower ProPattern 20%
MasterAirscrew Classic 16x6=====9,868
Graupner 15x8==============8,994
Graupner 14x7 three blade======8,726
APC 14x10================9,494
Idle with 16x6===repeatable and sustainable 1,711 with both nitro percentages, although I would fly it set at 2,100.
The APC needed a 2,400 rpm idle

If you could leave it, nothing. But your wife makes you clean it up.
