Dan, there may have been a reason the .80's response to leaning was soft. While changing the Davis exhaust for a TurboHeader I noticed that the compression was mushy. I flipped it a couple more times and heard hissing. It turned out that the copper spark plug gasket was mis-stamped and was thinner on one side than on the other. I replaced it with an aluminum gasket from a Taipan plug. No more leaky compression. Tomorrows run should be more enlightening. Do you think it would haul a 13.5x8? I am gonna try one and see.

Interesting about aluminum gaskets. Copper is probably just the right softness for the job and handles heat just right.
Beck's is German, btw. Not that I'm into designer beers, or imports just to look sophisticated or liberal, but because I like it. Drank a lot of it when I was in Germany. And Brauhaus. And Dinkelacker, and......you get the idea.....

They would carve the lamb/beef off the spit & it would be browned on the outside yet pink on the inside when they carved of the 1/4" thick slivers.

On beers (my last comment). In the past if we wanted to get our american / canadian cousins absolutely off their collective faces we would feed them in increasing order of "strengths" Coopers (SA) Resches or Tooheys (NSW) Fosters or VB (Vic) and finally XXXX (not the condom) from QLD or Bulimba (sadly no longer available). If in the NT we would feed them NT Draught. Usually 3 or 4 XXXX's would see them off their faces. HOWEVER it was totally the other way if spirits were involved, fortunaly I learnt Vodka lime and Tonic tasted the same as Lime and tonic.
Now Hobbsy a 13.5 x 8 should go well on your 80. What sort of prop and I am assuming you are using something like 15% nitro. The type (material used), and construction (blade design) have a lot to do with the performance. I have just been shown a 13 x 8 wood that when measured when it came of the a/c was in fact a 13 x5 due to hub compression. I am getting ready to go out to play and I am using 2 different design props on Ivrine powered bombers (same size).

On gaskets. Copper for me is always the preferred medium HOWEVER if not correctly sized and fitted and used to often they will crack (microscopically). This trait has cost me the odd fly off due to leakage. If suspect I usually dribble a little fuel around the plug recess and turn the prop over, no bubbles no problems. BTB I "normally" use aluminium gaskets due to lack of availability of copper ones these days.

Hey guys,
I picked up a saito 82 recently and it turned out to be in pretty bad shape. Rear bearing sounded really bad, piston and rod had so much gunk that it was almost bonded together. Carb was also in bad shape so that got cleaned up. Now that im putting everything back together i noticed that one valve has a big gap and the other doesn't have a gap at all. With the valves set this way could this engine run?

I would say that the valve with the big gap is stuck open and won't run at all like that. PB Blaster or similar will unstick it.
FNQ, the 13.5x8 will be a Bolly, the Bolly's are mighty fine props.

PB really stinks up a house fast, and it lingers. I would try a glow fuel soaking first. If you have a sonic cleaner you can set the engine in the solution on its side so the valves are submerged and let it go for 3-5 minutes. Depending on how deep your solution is you may have to turn it over to get the other side. The modern sonic cleaners are worth the money.

Hobbsy, I use a 13.5 x 6 (carbon bolly) on my YS 63 to great effect in Duration. Might I suggest that you try a 14x6 as an alternative, same numbers less pitch. IF it doesn't turn that prop with good revs (on 15 to 20% nitro) I would suggest moving it on or a serious overhaul. I will be using an 82 in my DVii once I get it out of the box so I will be better able to comment after it has been run. Has any one done an audit of their kit collection? My mate and I did the other day, my score was 15 scale, 5 sport, and 8 Old Timer kits. This comprised full kits, short kits and curses ARFs. Un finished projects amount to 10 and repairs amount 5 (in various stages). Plans stopped counting at 100 of various types but some need re copying. It is amazing what you find when you go looking. In my case I was finding my data on the Boomerang fighter that eventually was passed onto a fellow modeller. I am seriously considering getting the lot scanned and stored electronically.

I don't mind aluminium washers on the intake side,my 182 twin has them,but copper is better when it gets hot and cold quickly,swy i like castor oil but i won't go on...

Trev bach (sorry,he's a composer,i meant to say back) in the mid eighties the service manager from yamaha's m/c division stayed at my house for a few days and i got taught a lesson about drinking spirits,we don't get on..i'm safer drinking hooligan soup (beer) and physical size is no advantage.Really polite people tho i think he had a mild cultural shock and could'nt stop laughing

Yesterday l was flying my DLE20RA and it spit the spark plug out? striped out the head and wonder if l removed the head and took it to a small engine shop if it could be drilled out and (HOPE I SPELLED THIS RIGHT) heley-coiled? What Ya'll think? l got it from Tower Hobbies a little over two years ago and it has a two year warranty!
