Why is it that people running big pitched props when confronted with higher than normal sped landings refuse to go to a lower pitch prop. In Texaco we aim for around 5000 rpm for a 4 to 4.5 pound model. This means usually that the engine runs primarily on the LSN with a smidgen of HSN. Slightly larger pitch props (such as x 6 or x 7 or bigger) can be used for better thrust BUT when the same prop is used in a sports application (same engine but bigger rpm) the result is a faster a/c all round. De pitch to a x 5 or 6 and the engine is more manageable in the powered landing mode. (BTB our old timer a/c are always landed "dead stick"). I watched this situation yesterday with both sports and o/t a/c same engine in both same prop fitted to both. The guy has some 20 years experience so what do I know. Comp on the w/end YS is still a problem (1) and the other is in bits, so I guess a 50% fuel mix for the Saito 65 in the 85% Bomber is beckoning if it survives today's testing.

So what Saito equals a 40-50 CC Gas? Oh in Glow, not gas. Looking at engine choices for Ziroli P-61 which is 35CC minimum. I dont want a 2 stroke noise maker, so may consider CDI glow instead.

P-61 Black Widow? My father served in a bomber group in the Pacific theater that had a squadron of these on their base. He said at night the Japanese bombers and their escorts couldn't get pass them!

It has been one of the few WWII birds that grabbed my attention and held on. The first is the Corsair, then this one, and the B-25 along with the B-29. I have a Corsair nearly done, a P-61 full kit, and plans for the Ziroli B-25. The B-29 is too huge a commitment so never even considered building one, however, I could build a small foam one thats electric if I feel ambitious enough. I have a small stash of micro servos and RX to make it work. One other plane I may consider building is the A-26, I have some fiberglass parts for one in 1/8th scale.

What I really wanted to do is put a pair of Evolution 7-77 radials on it, but not enough power to safely fly the plane unless I do drastic weight reductions to it. I would have to knock off at least 10-15 pounds to make them work. I considered a pair of 40cc twins that have angled back plugs that will fit inside the cowls, but hate the 2 stroke noise. This bird has to sound good so only 4 strokes will work.

It will be an interesting endeavor for certain. I have a CNC mill and a lathe that I have to get running and learn the software on so that I can make the retractable landing gear for them, the lathe isnt CNC but does have digital readouts. A friend and I are also considering getting in on a laser cutter/printer from Glowforge. The base model is $1995 but requires a ventilation system, of step up to the basic plus that includes a filtration system that requires no external ventilation, which is $2995. What we really would like is the pro model that is the same as the basic plus, but has an unlimited bed length, and a more powerful laser, and that one is $3995. With one of those I can make my own parts for the B-25, and maybe improve on the parts for the P-61. What we like about this laser cutter is no other software is needed, and has a very small learning curve. Trace the part onto the piece of wood, stick it in the machine and press a button. It scans the part then you just tell it what to do, cut it out, or engrave it.
This season I am building a SIG Citabria, and it is a true builders kit, only the ribs and fuse formers are die crushed, all else is sticks and planks, so a great step up towards the big projects. I was a bit surprised the Citabria kit is still die crushed and not laser cut. There are so few sheets to cut, and several of them are identical, that you would think it would be less expensive for them to program the laser than to sharpen the dies. In any case, the parts weren't to badly crushed, a little sanding fixes them. This plane will get a Saito 56-72 depending on what I find. Hopefully the weather this weekend isn't too bad so I can fire up the latest Saito acquisition, the FA-72 on the Something Extra and get some flights in. If it does as well as I expect, then it will be a perfect match for the Citabria, the manual and plans show a Saito 46 being used on it. Too bad SIG no longer sells Saito.

Sounds like two fg57's would'nt be far off the mark even tho you prefer glow,have a listen to them running on you tube vids,mine sounds better because i run two 2" shotgun pipes on mine.
Dave our weather has just got to summer so no problems.If you sidemount the 62 you will gain prop clearance looks like it would be easy to convert your plane to a taildragger? then you can run a good two blade apc prop?
ps your harley keeps sneaking in to the background,is this on purpose photo bombing?

A Laser 300v (50cc) might squeeze in there at 3,97inches from center-line to valve cover top?? The 360v (60cc) is 4.45inches,,,
The ASP 400 (64cc) is 8.66inches in diameter reported on the HK page, Users say it's approx 4,5in from center-line to top of the rocker...
The Satio FG-60cc is 8.66inches in diameter...
The OS 320 FF 53cc is 7.71inches wide.... Cool sound but not really correct sound for your project.

I like those three blade props and that old inefficiency thing was pure wives tale. There is a shop light just above and to the left in the picture, in all of them actually, that blinds the camera if taking pictures from the right of the plane. The HD is sitting in a good spot.
Get the Duke out and clean the tires from sidewall to sidewall and listen to them hiss in the turns. You know you're alive then.

Barry over here they are called gonads while they are attached to the airframe but popey got rubberbanded yonks ago,he's still looking for his mountain oysters,dang things fall off and get lost.

OK Why would Anyone mess with the LSN on a brand new motor? I got my SSE with the newly acquired 72 on it out to the field, filled the tank halfway and started it up, it was so freaking rich that raw fuel was spitting out. I would up going nearly 3 full turns in on the LSN before it idled properly. I ran through that half tank in minutes just trying to get it to idle. I have it adjusted now on the fich side since it is a fairly new engine, I don't think it ran much, but I do know it was castor based just by the brown gunk on the muffler. The SSE flew pretty good considering its still sloppy rich on the HSN, lots of smoke and slime underneath from the crankcase breather. During tuning it backfired and blew the spinner off, so had to remove it and tighten the prop nuts, so I removed the crappy backplate too. Doing this lightened the nose by maybe a 1/4 ounce making the plane slightly tail heavy because I noticed as fuel burned off that it became pitchy and had reduced down elevator, so landed with a half tank left. Its on a new radio too so hoping all my issues with the engine quitting are over. The TC which is failsafe position will shut the motor off in a blink, so my guess is the Spectrum/JR RX was having issues causing it to failsafe briefly killing the engine. I think once this engine if broken in it will really pull this plane around nicely. I am running a 13x6 APC, but think I can go down to a 12x8 APC on it.
