Dave i used an apc 12x6 on my 62 it was the best flying prop i had for it,awesome inflight performance.

Hey guys... I just picked up a FA 82 about 10 yrs old / never been run...it has the hard plastic crankcase rear plate and carby support.
Is this something I should replace with an alu upgrade or is durable enough to stand the heat?
Thanks, Eric

On the 82 the backplate is fine although I replaced mine with the alum. just because . If you do replace yours just remember you need metal thread screws to hold the carby on .The 72 is another matter with people having air leaking issues . This is what Ive read over the yrs and can be found with some searching if you wish . Cheers the pope

You can tell I wasnt replying to you heh ! I just reread my post and it definitely needs some editing pope style but I'll just let this one slide ! Just a thought you may need a backplate gasket as well , I know the plastic one doesnt , been a while since I did mine so check out the parts list for the later one to make sure . Cheers

OK Why would Anyone mess with the LSN on a brand new motor? I got my SSE with the newly acquired 72 on it out to the field, filled the tank halfway and started it up, it was so freaking rich that raw fuel was spitting out. I would up going nearly 3 full turns in on the LSN before it idled properly. I ran through that half tank in minutes just trying to get it to idle. I have it adjusted now on the fich side since it is a fairly new engine, I don't think it ran much, but I do know it was castor based just by the brown gunk on the muffler. The SSE flew pretty good considering its still sloppy rich on the HSN, lots of smoke and slime underneath from the crankcase breather. During tuning it backfired and blew the spinner off, so had to remove it and tighten the prop nuts, so I removed the crappy backplate too. Doing this lightened the nose by maybe a 1/4 ounce making the plane slightly tail heavy because I noticed as fuel burned off that it became pitchy and had reduced down elevator, so landed with a half tank left. Its on a new radio too so hoping all my issues with the engine quitting are over. The TC which is failsafe position will shut the motor off in a blink, so my guess is the Spectrum/JR RX was having issues causing it to failsafe briefly killing the engine. I think once this engine if broken in it will really pull this plane around nicely. I am running a 13x6 APC, but think I can go down to a 12x8 APC on it.
I felt the APC 13x6 was the best prop for my 72. How are you getting ground clearance?

I have always been a little anal about reading manual and any other documentation that comes with a new engine and following the break in procedures to the letter. That way if their is a problem I know who to blame.

I am looking at getting an FG 21 Gas engine. Does anyone have direct experience with them? What percentage of oil do you mix, and what have you found to be the prefered prop size? I will be using this for a large scale model. A Bates Moth minor. I am trying to decide whether I need to go up to the next size engine as well. It is recommended for a 120 4-stroke.

17x6.If they recommend a 120/125 glow fourstroke i'd go for an fg30.There's a vid on you tube of an fg21 being run up in a small waco.
ps some lowlife stole a new plant i put out the front yesterday.Next time i'll tie a short piece of string to the roots and put a grenade in first.

Re the FG 21 use the factory data re oils and run in. Use the oil Saito actually supply, put an on off switch in the ignition circuit (apart from an opto or electronic off switch) and use it when the a/c is stationary and you should have no problems

So these Saito gassers like a 20-1 oil mix?

Most have gone to 15:1.

Right on the money sr although i don't get to fussed on oil brands, running klotz 200 in the fg57@20:1 because i already use that oil for my fa saitos. What are your thoughts on increasing the oil ratio to 15:1,a history if you like of what has happened re differing oil ratio use in saito gas fourstrokes.
Trev!! your alive!!

Vertical (or vert for short once we become mates) is that a jerry bates?(sp) kit? the moth minor is very pretty, understand why you want a fourstroke sound to finish the look and feel when you are flying it.As a bonus the fourstroke complements the look of a slow speed scale aircraft in flight because they give good acceleration from slow speeds with the right pitch prop as trev mentioned a few posts ago.The gas engines don't rev as hard as the glows so keep that in mind re the scale speed you want versus acceleration or easier landing when you throttle back on approach. If you've set the idle to suit the are easy to slow down and land in short places.
ps i run a wooden menz 23x10 on the fg57 which pulls around 5700 on the ground, factory benchmark prop(take a note here dave) is the apc 22x10@6500 which it did during run in.It's mounted in a blackhorse edge540v3 50cc two stroke arf.
pps for all the motorcycle fans whether you follow moto gp or not...you won't believe what rossi just did to marquez at the sepang moto gp round i just finished watching,i'm gobsmacked! and social media is in meltdown on the european side,i did'nt add any fuel to the fire

Well the Saito runs GREAT! I have it set rich for now, but not so rich it wont idle with a full tank. I finally got a full flight in on the Extra, so must have been the RX causing the issues with the engine quitting. It has the plastic backplate, so now I know if I start having issues with ide to swap out that plate. I figured out why it wasn't running as smooth is it should, the intake valve was way out of adjustment. Once I got that in spec it now idles smoothly. When I was last out one of the guys had a profile with an 82 on it, running just as bad as mine did, so I got out my kit and adjusted his valves, and leaned the LSN a 1/16th, and it is running great now.
On the FG engines, I have been running 16:1 from the start and use Lucas oil. Been using that oil for a long time in my other 2 strokes and never had an issue. The only issues I have had is the damned Ethanol fuel eating the lines and seals in the carbs! Found I can get E Free Premium across the border so thats all I use now.
Can't wait to get the 72 fully broken in so I can get top RPM out of it and put the SSE to work! It is almost there, lots of vertical but not able to hover it just yet.
