Thanks for the tips, Richard
Re the inverted thing on take-off - it's a position I have found myself in occasionally on landing, and it doesn't usually end all that well

Bj will the cowl width on your me109 allow you to tilt the saito 180 slightly sideways as richard sensibly suggests? it makes running the engine in general a lot easier.Do you think our american friends need a refreshing break from their elections which seem to go on forever by reminding the motorcycle minded one's that there is a motoGP race on this sunday night? i'll attach a couple of pics so you can get the idea.. this is crazy joe and this is one of the umbrella girls from roughly the same angle did i mention the racings really close and exciting..

Off topic, I know - but did you see the sensational pole lap by Marquez?
The guy is a freak!
Lorenzo broke the lap record... only to have Marc break that as well - on the last lap, while mingling with Rossi and another bike. I'm sure that cost him a tenth or two...

Funny-as Popey.
Some sin-bin points maybe on their way.
Back to you, Old Fart - I didn't pick up on the suggestion of mounting the engine slightly tilted. I was thinking more along the lines of mounting it back towards the firewall as far as I can to avoid cutting the cowl too much. It would mean making a prop extension shaft - got a few ideas on that, as well as having a front bearing on the nose to keep it all rigid.
Will have to have a look at possibly mounting it like a Slant-6 Valiant donk

Pete, here is my son, Little Dave who is 6' 5" and about 250 lbs, I had him on a Yamaha 50 when he was about 5.
I have almost all the parts I need for the busted 1.00 I got a while back, I'll report.

Speaking of busted parts, I need to replace the bearings on one of my 100. Got the bearings, now to disassemble it. Getting them out of the case is always a blast, NOT.

Many hints here on how to do this. Heat in oven and slam on block of wood works most times. On a stubborn FA-180, I used an expanding concrete wall anchor, ground slightly on the diameter to fit the inside of the bearings, inserted it into the inner race, expanded the anchor to a tight fit, and pulled the bearing out with a gear puller/steering wheel puller. Heating the case helps with this method also. This may ruin the bearing being removed since you are pulling on the inner race, but in my case the bearings were shot anyway. Good luck.
Sincerely, Richard

I have this heat gun that can melt solder. Used it on my other Saito to remove the bearings. Lots of ways to do it, but none of them fun! Since the plane is busted up from a very bad maiden flight(now I understand why tail heavy planes are so hard to land), and I am not planning on touching it for a while, this will be a good winter project.
On an upbeat note, got my P-47 ready to fly, and got my Ultimate 10 dash 300 Gemini running. I picked this plane up for $300 because it had the twin 120 on it. What a nice running engine, love the sound it makes. Also balanced the Life in my T-clips and saved it. Last time out voltage dropped to under 5v with a fresh charge, but now the voltage is back to normal. It has my Saito FG-11 in it, eager to get it back in the air.

Why is bearing extraction a problem? I get one of my surplus allen keys and grind down the smaller end to may a sharp (sort of) spade on the end and insert it between the bearing and case and hammer out. The front one is never a problem using all the usual techniques. Re that rear bearing you might need to use a little imagination but it works. I have various allen keys ground for various types and sizes of engines.

Set a bit more expo on the elevator nose heavy planes are a pig to land maybe that's where people get the idea that fourstrokes are to heavy and lack performance, quite the opposite.Post a rough drawing of the engine mount for the saito 180 with prop ext and what do you think about the way kolm engines did it with the galloping ghost?
Little dave is having a lot of fun.
Popey all the ducati sport/road bikes for sale make heaps more power than most people can use on the road, the gp bikes are on another planet altogether which is why the best riders are sometimes referred to as aliens. And here's a pic just to scare you..

Ok... now you're really poking my interest....
A Moki 400 Radial... or a Kolm 3 cyl inline (e.g. Galloping Ghost).
Both magic beasts
I'll see if I can get some mock-up pics of where I'd like the 180 to sit in the BF 109.
...and you don't need big four-bangers to go seriously fast. This humble little Rotax 256 Twin 2-stroker flogged a fair few bikes (and V8's) in it's day...

Best of all, it is made to run inverted & the remote needle allows flexibility with the fuel tank location.
With CDI it uses 1 oz of 15% glow fuel per minute @ WOT. With GI it swills 12 oz of the same fuel in 7 minutes!

I bet that sounds super nice too! I finally got my name to not mention here Gemini twin 120 running with straight pipes over the weekend, and just love the sound it makes.

This (FA-200Ti) would probably fit better than an FA-180 & makes the same or slightly better power comparing both with CDI..

As an aside, I'd love to find a way to make an inline 3 or 4 cyl 4-stroker using whatever top-ends I can get my hands on (OS, Saito, ASP etc.). I have a mill and a lathe, so I could probably do most if it myself - the hard part would be the crank.
Unless... of course...there's a way to "daisy chain" 3 or 4 existing single cylinder 4 strokes to make a single long engine.
Surely... someone's tried to connect the prop shaft of a motor behind to the crank/drive of a motor in front before (??)
My thinking would be that for a 3 cylinder rig, each individual donk would be timed 120 deg apart.
Do-able?
BJ
Shoot i hope so we're on the same page.My dream is saito will make an inline triple (with the same crank spacing as the il200 kolm) engine out of three fa220 cylinders and triple carbys poking out the side of the cowl...almost as good as looking at a ducati grid girl.
Sr the 180 single on good nitro may only run for seven minutes on a tank in the air but by golly it's exciting to fly, sounds good too.
