You notice that most of my secular engine’s are on a shelf with no idea of what they will be used for.
But i have all kinds of ideas for my Saito ‘s though

today i will try to get out and run the 150s.

This is most likely the oldest SaitoI owned, a removable head 45.It had lousy compression when hot, which Clarence Lee mentioned in his test.

Nice, beautiful girl and beautiful plane. I have never owned an open rocker engine, no interest there.

This Irvine 150 is one engine I regret selling, a picture of it would define the word smooth runner.

Back when I bought my first Saito, open rocker was the only flavor. I already had an open rocker OS 60 but I was talked out of using it defore even trying it out.
The Saito actually looked a bit cheap and crude compared to the OS!
It was a fun part of the learning curve but it did get me on the road to running four strokes only.
Still have that old 30. It spent some time on one of the very first Sr Kadet kits that Sig shipped out. Marginal power but it was still fun to fly. Just retired that Kadet last year after well over thirty years. Building its replacement right now. Will be running the 62 that last powered the original. Did put some late style rockers on it after some radiusing of the edges and deburring them.

This summer I will put together a Seniorits for the open rocker 30 just to give that first Saito wings again.
One open rocker I am interested in is any Enya open rocker.

I have the new model 30 and would trade it for another open rocker Saito or Enya in a heartbeat.

They have a cool mechanical look that's for sure. I don't think I have any more with the tang mounted carb.

Okay,
So far, so good. That was the first package lost this year. I will dig out another and mail it this week.
I shipped out 8 packages that day. That was right before the big tornado. All were late.

You da man Gary! Oh, don't forget the adaptor (10mm to 12mm) so I can run the muffler on a 62.

Default Maiden Day!

Finally a break in the weather, it's maiden day for the Phoenix Models 46-55 size Sbach 342. The fa82 should yank it around strong with an apc 14x6. Now if my thumbs can just remember what to do I won't have to stomp the thing into a 5 gl bucket. Heehee

He makes great adapters.

Gary made these so I could put TurboHeaders on my FA 40-a's and 30's if I wanted to.

Those do look great!

I've have been unable to find 10mm-12mm bushing adaptors like Gary's online, maybe it's because they don't exist!

Off to the field........

The straight bushings are from the 170 radial.Pretty easy to make .

The elbows for Dave were homemade.

Great day at the field, Saitos everywhere! Only one 2 stroke there today but he's forgiven, it's a DA 70 twin.

The PM Sbach 342 is a great flyer. Wicked fast rolls and super stable, stalls are flat and predictable. The fa82 pulls out of hovers ok with this 6.25lb plane but will be much better after another gallon of fuel when I move up to a 14x6.

Saitos, they get you stoked!

Gary, I sent you a PM.

BTW, how do you tune the idle screw with a Carb that has an accelerator pump ?? it seams to me it would be rather easy to set it way too lean

Thanks to Gary I have a second Saito .80 I'm hoping to get it mounted on the engine stand next month! Thanks Gary! I'm earmarking it for a Brian Taylor Spitfire MK-1A I plan on building.

Now on the open rocker Saito did they have the same bad habit as the OS .60 FS did of shedding pushrods and cam followers on a hard landing?

You can always tell the gear heads apart from the rest;
Most folks buy a plane and then go engine shopping.
Gear heads buy piles of engines and try to find planes to run them in.

Yep, whack into the weeds past the end of the runway and you may lose a pushrod. Sticky valves or an over-rev too.

Gary nice adapters man and true you buy a saito first then figure out the smallest aeroplane it will fit in.You may have misunderstood okc's dry sense of humour as one persons hard landing is a mild bounce or two to others. My money is on the landing automatically converted the fixed undercarriage into retracts, there may have been a more vertical aspect involved.

Auto conversion works fast and efficiently. I use it regularly. Unfortunately the retracts it creates work worse than the original fixed gear.
Must be doing something wrong.
Or just more things wrong.
love them Saitos!

Heehee, yeah I've done plenty of auto conversion. Converted a bunch of retracts into slick bottom wings too. At some point I figured out a flare and a stall aren't the same thing.
